This composition by Dizzy Stratford symbolises the birth of the new Russia in the time of Mikhail Gorbachev with its new openness in public affairs (glasnost) accompanied by political and economic reform (perestroika). Glasnost is a work offering a modern vision of Russian music. Dizzy Stratford has chosen to combine the national hymn of the Soviet Union with two traditional melodies which, with a steady, energetic rhythm portray the wind of change and freedom in Russian society.

The composition the Lonesome Knight was based on a fairytale. The piece was written by Saskia Apon for the National Brass Band Championships 2001.

Once upon a time there was a knight who went to fight and defeat the dragon that had beenkilling the people of his town.
There is a short but intense battle between the two and the knight is triumphant. However whilst persuing the dragon the knight has travelled far away from his home and now is lost. He roames around trying to findhis way home, but exhausted and weary he falls to the ground. He awakens startled by a Giant and a group of Goblins who are celebrating the death of the dragon.
The knight joins in the festivities but after a long evening is once more leftalone.
The sun rises the following morning and he sees a castle on the horizon. He enthousiastcally ventures towards the castle in the hope of meeting other people.
However he becomes greatly disillusioned when there is none to be found. Inhis desperation the knight climbs the tower ready to jump off.
Suddenly he hears a heavenly voice. Right before him is the most beautiful princess he has ever seen. She graciously thanks him for killing the dragon, a spark ingnites between themand they build a life together and.... live happily ever after!

Saskia Apon studied harp at Rotterdam School of music. With this instrument she rounded of her studies by passing with credit, however it was her love of composition thatremained her focus.
Self-taught, she began composing at the age of nine. Since then she has written pieces for The Dutch Brass Quintet, The Dutch Brass Ensemble, The Rotterdam Trombone Quartet and the brass band quintet Brass Ability.
Atpresent she is the in-house arranger for The Rotterdam Philarmonic Brass Ensemble.
Besides the customary attention for the real splashworks she endeavours to add value to the melodic function of the brass wind instruments in her music. Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451. His father was a wool merchant. Originally he seemed destined to follow in his father’s footsteps, and thus sailed the oceans to countries as far apart as Iceland and Guinea.
In 1476 his ship was sunk during a battle off the coast of Portugal. Columbus saved his own life by swimming to shore.
In 1484 he conceived the idea of sailing to the Indies via a westward sea route, but it was only in 1492 that he was able to realize this plan.
On this first voyage he was in command of three ships: the flag-ship, called the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Ni?a. From Spain Columbus sailed via the Canary Islands to the Bahamas, whichhe sighted on October 12th 1492.
Without being aware of it Columbus discovered the ‘New World’ he thought he had landed in the eastern part of Asia. The motif from Dvoøák’s 9th Symphony ‘Aus der neuen Welt’ forms a little counterfeit history at this point in the composition.
After this first voyage Columbus was to undertake another three long voyages to America. These voyages were certainly not entirely devoid of misfortune.
More than once he was faced with shipwreck, mutiny and the destruction of settlements he had founded.
After Columbus had left for Spain from Rio Belen in 1503, he beached his ships on the coast of Jamaica. The crew were marooned there and it was only after a year that Columbus succeeded in saving his men and sailing back to Spain with them.
In the music the misunderstanding about which continent Columbus discovered in his lifetime resounds, for does this part in the composition not contain Asiatic motifs?
Poor Columbus! In 1506 the famous explorer died in Valladolid.

Christopher Columbus wordt in 1451 geboren in Genua als zoon van een wolhandelaar. Aanvankelijk lijkt hij voorbestemd om als koopman door het leven te gaan. Zo bevaart hij al een groot deel van de wereldzeeën tot landen als IJslanden Guinea.
In 1476 zinkt zijn schip in een veldslag voor de kust van Portugal. Columbus kan zich zwemmend naar de kust redden.
In 1484 vat hij het plan op om langs de “andere” kant van de wereld naar India te varen. Pasin 1492 kan hij zijn plan verwezenlijken.
Het vlaggeschip op deze reis is de Santa Maria. Het schip wordt gesecondeerd door de Pinta en de Ni?a.
Vanuit Spanje vaart Columbus via de Canarische eilanden naar de Bahamas,die hij op 12 oktober 1492 in zicht krijgt. Zonder het te weten ontdekt Columbus de “Nieuwe wereld”.
Hij verkeert in de veronderstelling in het oosten van Azië te zijn aangeland. Een stukje geschiedvervalsing vormt hier eenmotiefje uit Dvoøák’s 9de symfonie, ‘Aus der neuen Welt’.
Na deze eerste reis maakt Columbus nog drie grote reizen naar Amerika. De reizen verlopen zeker niet alle voorspoedig. Zo is er bijv. meermaals sprake van schipbreuk,muiterij en verwoesting van de door Columbus gestichte nederzettingen.
Als hij in 1503 uit Rio Belen weer richting Spanje vertrekt, stranden zijn schepen op de kust van Jamaica. De bemanning wordt daar achtergelaten.
Paseen jaar later weet Columbus zijn bemanning te redden en met hen terug te varen naar Spanje.
In de muziek klinkt het misverstand over welk werelddeel Columbus in zijn leven bevaren had door. Roept dit deeltje geen associatiesop met Aziatische klanken? Arme Columbus!

Dedicated to the North American Brass Band Association, this is music that is full of energy and dynamic extremes. In form it draws from the overture style, although the themes are self-existing and the piece is programmatic. Working well asa festival opener, it sets a mood of excitement. Following the rhythmic fanfares of the opening, the first theme is presented in the cornets followed by a return to the same rhythmic material. A second theme appears in the horn section and isdeveloped, changing into a darker and sinister form of the same motif. Eventually a Maestoso section is reached, full of sustained block chords in the cornets and trombones, as the rest of the band counters with cascading lines that weavestraight through the brighter instruments.

Dit levendige werk vol dynamische uitersten is opgedragen aan de North American Brass Band Association. Qua vorm is het geënt op de ouverturestijl, hoewel de thema’s op zichzelf staan en het een programmatische compositie betreft. Het is heelgeschikt voor de opening van een festival, want het creëert een enthousiaste, verwachtingsvolle stemming. Na de ritmische fanfares van de opening wordt het eerste thema gepresenteerd in de cornetten, gevolgd door een terugkeer naar hetzelfderitmische materiaal. Er verschijnt een tweede thema in de hoornsectie, dat wordt doorontwikkeld en overgaat in een duistere en onheilspellende vorm van hetzelfde motief. Uiteindelijk komt er een maestoso gedeelte tot stand, vol aangehouden akkoordenin de kornetten en trombones, waarbij de rest van het orkest dalende lijnen produceert die door de helder klinkende instrumenten heen zijn geweven.

Dieses Musikstück, das voller Energie und von extremer Dynamik geprägt ist, wurde der North American Brass Band Association gewidmet. Der formale Aufbau des Werkes orientiert sich an einer Ouvertüre, auch wenn die Themen für sich selbst stehenund das Stück programmatisch ist. Es eignet sich gut als Eröffnungsstück für ein Festival, da es das Publikum begeistern wird. Auf den Fanfarenrhythmus der Einleitung folgt das erste Thema, das von den Kornetten vorgestellt wird und schließlich zumursprünglichen rhythmischen Material zurückkehrt. Das zweite Thema wird von den Hörnern gespielt und weiterentwickelt, wobei das gleiche Motiv in eine dunklere und unheimlichere Stimmung wechselt. Danach erklingt ein Maestoso-Teil mit Akkordblöckenin den Kornetten und Posaunen, während das restliche Orchester kaskadenartige Melodielinien spielt, die sich durch die helleren Instrumente schlängeln.

Dédiée la North American Brass Band Association, cette œuvre est pleine d’énergie et de dynamiques extrêmes. En dépit de sa forme d’ouverture, les thèmes ne sont pas liés et l’œuvre est programme. Convient comme pièce d’ouverture defestival et crée une ambiance d’enthousiasme. Suite aux fanfares rythmiques du début, le premier thème est présenté par les cornets piston, suivi par un retour au même matériel rythmique. Un deuxième thème apparaît dans le registre des cors et estdéveloppé, se changeant en une version plus sombre et sinistre du même motif. Finalement on arrive une section de Maestoso, qui contient de nombreuses double-cordes soutenues chez les cornets et trombones, tandis que le reste de l’ensemblerépond par des lignes descendantes qui se tissent travers les instruments plus aigus.

Troika is a Russian word that means a group of three but it also means a light Russian sleigh pulled by three horses. Christmas Troika portrays the joy of Christmas via a musical sleigh-ride. Listen as the glistening snow crinkles beneath the weight of the sleigh and the hooves of the prancing horses as it travels through the countryside. One can almost see the frost on the trees and hear the wind blow and the sleigh-bells ring as the tune O Come, All Ye Faithful winds its way through the music.

Troika ist ein russisches Wort für einen dreiarmigen Leuchter oder einen dreispännigen Schlitten. Letzterer ist auch in diesem weihnachtlichen Stück für Brass Band gemeint, der eine Schlittenfahrt durch ein verschneite Winterlandschaft beschreibt. Durch die Musik kann man förmlich die Eiszapfen an den Bäumen sehen und die Schlittenglocken hören, während die Fahrt zu den Klängen von Herbei, o ihr Gläubigen ihren Lauf nimmt...

It is interesting to recall that Handel wrote Messiah, his most famous work whilst at the lowest point of his career, suffereing from fianantial hardship and depression. It was only composing that distracted him from this misery. In He Shall Feed His Flock,based on texts of Isaiah and Matthew, we hear praise for the peace that the Messiah has brought to earth.

The Netherlands have been an important trading nation for a long time partly as a result of their geographical situation.
One of the first multinationals in The Netherlands was the ‘Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie’ (VOC).
The aim of the VOC was to send ships to Asia in order to buy pepper and spices, and to take over the Portuguese monopoly in this field. The Company was successful. An era of great prosperity resulted, in which the art of painting (Rembrandt van Rijn) as well as science (Constantijn Huygens) flourished alongside a thriving economy.

1. The Sails are set : There is a lot of hustle and bustle on the quay. The crew are preparing fordeparture. Goodbyes are said and once the sails have been hoisted the ship sets out to sea.

2. A Visit to the Rajah of Yogyakarta: After a voyage of many months the place of destination is reached. A visit to the Radja, the king of the area around Yokyakarta, follows. The dishes and beverages and the native culture in general are very pleasant after having been on a diet of ship’s biscuit and water for such a long time.

3. The Holds have been loaded: The holds have been loaded to the brim, and the voyage home can be begin!

4. Death sails along: Life at sea is rough. not seldom did a sailor die of a tropical disease or scurvy. After a memorial service, the Captain would speak the words ‘One, two, three, in God’s name ...’ and the body, wrapped in canvas, would be committed to the sea.

5. A joyful homecoming: After many months of hardship coming home is perhaps the best part of the entire voyage. The quay is filled with people eager to give the crew a warm welcome.

Nederland is, mede door de geografische ligging, sinds lange tijd een belangrijke handelsnatie.
Eén van de eerste multinationals was de ‘Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie’ (VOC).
Het doel van de VOC was schepen naar Azië testuren om peper en specerijen te kopen en het Portugese monopolie over te nemen.
De VOC werd een succes. Het was een tijd van grote welvaart (Gouden Eeuw), waarin naast een bloeiende economie ook de schilderkunst (Rembrandt vanRijn) en de wetenschap (Constantijn Huygens) floreerden.

5. A joyful homecoming: Na maanden van ontberingen is het thuiskomen misschien wel het mooiste van de hele reis. De kade staat weer vol om de bemanning een warm onthaal te geven.

Jan de Haan schreef Hispaniola ter gelegenheid van het vijfhonderdste sterfjaar van Christoffel Columbus (1451-1506), die in 1492 Amerika ontdekte. Een van de eerste eilanden die hij aantrof in de Caribische zee noemde hijLa Española - in het Latijn ‘Hispaniola’. Het werk bestaat uit drie aaneengesloten delen. In deel een wordt de voorbereiding van de reis weerspiegeld, steeds afgewisseld door een ontspannen Spaanse sfeer. Het snelle tweede deel beschrijftmet vele ritmische verrassingen de onvoorspelbare zeereis. Als de scheepsbel heeft geklonken, begint het derde deel. Tijdens het breed uitgesponnen thema lijkt de kust uit zee te rijzen, waarna de euforie vanwege de ontdekkingvan het nieuwe land uitmondt in een muzikale climax.

La Espagnola - lateinisch Hispaniola - nannte der große Entdecker Kolumbus eine karibische Insel, die seine Flotte auf dem Weg zur neuen Welt“ nach zwei Monaten auf See erreichte. Die drei Sätze von Jan de Haans Komposition beschreiben zunächst die Reisevorbereitungen, dann - temporeich und voll rhythmischer Überraschungen - die gefährliche Seereise und schließlich aufkeimende Freude und Euphorie, als es endlich Land in Sicht“ heißt. Spannung und Abenteuer bis zum letzten Ton!

Jan de Haan a composé Hispaniola pour célébrer le 500e anniversaire de la mort de Christophe Colomb (1451-1506). Né en Italie, le jeune Christophe Colomb s’installa Lisbonne. De l , il entreprit ses voyages découverte vers l’Afrique et ailleurs. Adhérent la thèse que la Terre est ronde, il décida de rejoindre l’Asie (Les Indes orientales) en navigant par l’Ouest. En 1492, il embarqua avec une petite flotte battant pavillon espagnol. Après deux mois de navigation, il découvrit les premières îles dans la mer des Cara bes. Persuadé d'avoir atteint l'Asie, Colomb baptisa ces nouvelles terres « Les Indes » et les hommes qui les peuplent « les Indiens ». Étonné par laressemblance de certains paysages avec l'Espagne, il donna le nom d'Española (Petite Espagne) l’une des îles (aujourd’hui Ha ti et la République dominicaine). Ce nom fut ensuite latinisé en Hispaniola.Hispaniola est une œuvre en trois mouvements sans interruption. Le premier mouvement illustre la préparation du voyage. La précision qui caractérise la musique alterne de manière répétitive avec la décontraction d’une atmosphère typiquement espagnole. Le deuxième mouvement d’allure vive est rempli de surprises rythmiques. Nous suivons Colomb dans son long, imprévisible et dangereux périple en mer. Terre en vue !, la cloche du bateau s’ébranle. Nous entrons dans le troisième mouvement. Durant la longue exposition du thème, les côtes semblent s’élever lentement de la mer. Puis vient l’euphorie de la découverte de la nouvelle terre. Finalement, la musique rayonne dans une intensité lumineuse.

In 1911 the Russian impresario Diaghilev commisioned Paul Dukas to compose music for the famous ballet fairy-tale 'La Perie'by Jean Coralli.
Fokine was to make a new choreography, so that the Russian ballet company 'Ballet Russes' would be able to perform the piece in Paris that same year.
Due to a quarrel between Diaghilev and Dukas about who should dance the title-part, however, the ballet was not performed by the 'Ballet Russes'but by another company in 1912.
The ballet 'La Perie' is Dukas' last symphonic work. In 1911 gaf de Russische impresario Diaghilev Paul Dukas opdracht om muziek te componeren voor het beroemde ballet sprookje 'La Perie' van Jean Coralli.
Fokine was gevraagd om een nieuwe choreografie te maken, zodat het Russische balletgezelschap 'Ballet Russes' in staat zou zijn om het stuk in Parijs op te voeren in datzelfde jaar.
Door een ruzie tussen Diaghilev en Dukas over de vraag wie de hoofdrol mocht dansen, werd het ballet in 1912 echter niet uitgevoerd door het 'Ballet Russes' maar door een ander gezelschap.
Het ballet 'La Perie' is het laatste symfonische werk van Dukas.
