Mozart's Early Quartet collection is recognized as a crown of string chamber music. This accessible arrangement, from an arranger recognized for his careful and creative adaptations, is very true to the original. An interesting bass part has been added, and the more taxing rhythms, accidentals and embellishments have been simplified. Playable by younger players, yet advanced students also will find this piece delightfully satisfying---even challenging---when played at a faster tempo. Here's a centerpiece for any string orchestra concert program! Correlates with String Explorer Book One, unit 13. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

The keyboard music of English composer William Byrd (1543--1623) has long been regarded as some of the most representative works produced during the late Renaissance period. The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, the quintessential source of music for this idiom of the time, is also the source of the three Byrd titles included in this suite: The Bells, John, and Sellinger's Round. The arrangements by Douglas E. Wagner are richly scored to flatter the sound of ensembles of any size. Care has been taken to eliminate technical obstacles for younger players, with musically interesting individual parts a strong consideration. (4:25).

Despite the numbering, the overture Leonore No. 2 was Beethoven's first effort to precede his only opera with an adequate introduction. It had been composed last minute and in between the rehearsals for the premiere of the opera Leonore oder Der Triumph der ehelichen Liebe (Leonore, or The Triumph of Marital Love) on 20 November 1805 at the Theater an der Wien. This comprehensive, programmatic work was met with incomprehension at first performances just like the opera itself. Beethoven felt compelled to re-write Leonore completely and presented it under its new title Fidelio. In 1806 he revised the overture to such an extent that a symphonic sonata movement emerged; with another incorrect numbering, Leonore No. 3 has gone down in music history and above all it has achieved a regular place in concert repertory. And in order to complete the confusion: written in 1806/07, only Overture No. 1 is Beethoven's chronologically last effort to write an overture for Leonore, before he - many years later - put an end to this infinite subject with the so-called Fidelio overture for the third version of the opera. After all, thanks to the search after a dramaturgically convincing beginning of the opera, the music world has been enriched by four quite different orchestra scores. The music text of the present score is based on Volume 11 of the Supplements to the Complete Edition. The performance material of the Fidelio and Leonore No. 3 overtures is available in Breitkopf Urtext editions..

The Famous One in the Leading EditionBeethoven spent a relatively long time on his 5th Symphony. Thus, first sketches can already be found from as early as 1804, four years before the work was premiered in Vienna in December 1808. Not only impressive is its striking opening theme, letting everyone know immediately that this is Beethoven being played, but also its nickname symphony of fate. Nothing in the sources prefigures the much-cited fate, musically knocking here at the door. The autograph of the score and the set of parts prepared from it, including Beethoven's revisions, serve as the main sources of this Urtext edition, together with the missing copy of the score, now extant only incomplete in photographs, and the original edition of the parts authorized by Beethoven. The new performance material is based on the recently published volume of the New Beethoven Complete Edition.

This publication presents under one cover various short works for sundry orchestral scorings. Larghetto for Orchestra is MacMillan's orchestration (2017) of his celebrated Miserere for a cappella mixed choir (2009), a setting in Latin of Psalm 51, 'Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy', the penitential text famously set in the 17th century by Gregorio Allegri. The Larghetto orchestration was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in celebration of Manfred Honeck's 10th Anniversary as Music Director. Memoire imperiale is one of a number of variations on General John Reids march tune Old Gaul commissioned from Scottish composers to mark the centenary in 1994 of the Faculty of Music at Edinburgh University. The Faculty was established following a bequest by General Reid (1721-1807), a former law student at the University and a renowned flute player and composer of marches for the BritishArmy, and he asked that an annual concert be organised at which one or more of his compositions be played. Composed in 2012 for the Britten Sinfonia, One is a monody in which a single line is passed around the instruments, painting it with different colours as it emerges and develops. Lasting only a few minutes, its singularity is maintained until blossoming in the lastfew bars. For Sonny (2011, orch 2013) and Ein Lamplein verlosch (2018, orch 2019) are short, private memorial tributes originally for string quartet and here rescored for string orchestra. Hirta was composed in 2016 as part of Deccas The Lost Songs of St Kilda project. Nearly a century ago, the last 36 residents were evacuated from the most remote part of the British Isles, St Kilda, an isolated archipelago off the beautiful and rugged western coast of Scotland. After 86 years, the music of St Kilda was rediscovered, recorded in a Scottish care home by Trevor Morrison, an elderly man who had been taught piano by an inhabitant of St Kilda. The songs were 'reimagined' for the Decca album by various.

A Programmatic Declaration of BeliefFelix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed his Reformation Symphony for the celebrations marking the 300th anniversary of the Confessio Augustana, the Protestant declaration of faith. Owing to various and only partially explained reasons, there was no performance in 1830, the year in question; it was only two years later that the composer conducted the premiere of his work, now heavily revised, in Berlin. There was only one more performance in Mendelssohn's lifetime, this one conducted by Julius Rietz in Dusseldorf; the composer had since distanced himself from his opus.Conceived for the concert hall, the symphony formulates its theological references through the integration of various motives. This occurs in the finale, for example, in which Mendelssohn quotes the Luther chorale Ein feste Burg in the flute, from where it builds up to a triumphant principal theme. The strong extra-musical aspect must have been one of the reasons for the composer's later avoidance of this score, especially since Mendelssohn was becoming increasingly skeptical about explicitly programmatic music in the instrumental domain. Next to the Dusseldorf performance material of 1837, two scribal copies have been examined for the first time; they transmit the main stages of the version of 1830.

English country dancing has been popular for over 300 years, and The Dancing Master features two delightful folk tunes in that timeless style arranged by Andrew H. Dabczynski. The first lively tune, Jamaica, has been used in the theme to the British TV comedy, Upstart Crow, and the second, The Goddesses, offers a charming contrast. Attributed to John Playford, these melodies fall under the fingers of beginning string students with interesting, rhythmic parts for all players. An optional hand-drum part adds to the upbeat 17th century dance atmosphere. (2:10).

Debussy decided in 1892, at the age of thirty, to compose a work for orchestra after Mallarmé's poem, L'aprés-midi d'un faune. Originally he had thought of writing three movements (Prélude - Interlude - Paraphrase) but when the first movement was completed in September 1894 he came to the conclusion that the continuation would be superfluous. The Prélude was first performed in Paris with Gustave Doret as conductor on 22 December of the same year yet, as it achieved immediate succes it had to be repeated. Source for the present edition was the first printed score (1895) which had been revised by the composer. Debussy's original, French expressions and markings have been retained.

Franz Schubert wrote the two movements of the Unfinished Symphony in October 1822. The torso has since been posing riddles to posterity, which first learned of the existence of this masterpiece in 1865 through the simultaneous first edition and world-premiere performance. There seems to have been no external reason for its creation. Did Schubert really consider the piece only as an experiment that did not warrant any continuation? It should be noted, however, that Schubert sketched the Scherzo up to the beginning of the Trio, and even fully orchestrated nine measures of this movement.

Spiritual AffinitiesSchumann had already worked on Byron's Manfred as a law student, and the topic fascinated him from that time on. Perhaps he discovered a spiritual affinity to himself in the romantic hero's inner conflict? In any event, he decided on a stage rendition of the drama with incidental music, an entirely new genre that he had been dreaming of for some time already. He conducted the overture - it dates from 1848 - for the first time as a separate piece in March 1852. In addition, he followed the preparations for the first edition of the complete performance material very closely, which was published by Breitkopf in Leipzig that same year. The Breitkopf Urtext edition of the Manfred Overture is based on this first print of the score and parts revised by Schumann. At the same time, this edition also marks a new chapter in the expansion of the collection of Schumann overtures that have already been published by Breitkopf (to Hermann und Dorothea op. 136, Szenen aus Goethes Faust WoO 3 and Genoveva op. 81).Audiences should be ready for something new and unheard of, wrote Robert Schumann to Franz Liszt in late 1851, referring to the world premiere of his Dramatic Poem Manfred.

The Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy pursues the goal of making accessible to the public in an adequately scholarly form all of Mendelssohn's accessible compositions, letters and writings, along with all other documents of his artistic oeuvre. A considerable number of Mendelssohn's works are still waiting to be published; many others have been published in an unsatisfactory manner.Though the new Mendelssohn Complete Edition follows the ten volumes of the Leipziger Mendelssohn Ausgabe (LMA) published by the Deutscher Verlag fur Musik (DVfM) in Leipzig since 1961, it sees itself as a fundamentally new conception which reflects the present-day standard of scholarly editions. The first volumes of the new Complete Edition were presented in Leipzig on 3 November 1997 at Mendelssohn Festtage in Leipzig.SON 411 - 413 have been awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2006.Editorial Board: Christian Martin Schmidt (chairman), Peter Ward Jones, Friedhelm Krummacher, R. Only the text and the last page of the autograph score of the Christmas Cantata “Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe†BWV 197.1 (197a) have survived, beginning with the end of the 2nd aria. This, along with the complete surviving 3rd aria are found in parody versions in the Wedding Cantata BWV 197 / BWV3 197.2, from which this cantata takes its BWV number. For a long time there has been a fascinating theory about the missing opening chorus: could this have been the parody source for the Gloria in the Mass in B minor? The musicologist and organist Pieter Dirksen has pursued this, creating a four-part choral version largely derived from corrections made in the autograph of the Mass in B minor. He has underlaid this with the text of the opening chorus (the German translation of the Gloria). What results is a convincing version of the Christmas Cantata – with one of Bach’s best-known choruses as the prominent opening chorus and plausible solutions for the other sections missing in the autograph.
