French composer Pierre Max Dubois (1930-1995) significantly contributed to the wind repertoire. Dutilleux's Chorale Cadenza and Fugue for Trombone and Piano has never found its way into the mainstream of Trombone repertoire yet it remains a frequent favourite at virtuoso solo competitions. Chorale Cadenza and Fugue is ideal for trombonists seeking something more substantial and varied. Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) began his career as director of the Musical Illustrations Service on French Radio and Television but he left this position after 18 years to devote himself entirely to composition. As the title suggests Dutilleux's Chorale Cadenza and Fugue is divided in tothree contrasting sections which run seamlessly from one to another. The piece begins with the Trombone playing a lyrical chorale melody accompanied by rich Piano chords. The cadenza is dramatic with the intense Trombone line being played over tremolos from the Piano. This is followed by the angular and rhythmic Fugue initially stated in the low register of the Piano. As the Trombone states the Fugue a countermelody is introduced on the Piano. These themes continue and augment into a virtuosic fanfare motif closing in a grand and dramatic finish. Dutilleux's Chorale Cadenza and Fugue for Trombone and Piano is inspiring challenging motivating and essential to the repertoire of all advanced trombonists.

French composer Henri Büsser entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1889. He won the 1893 Prix de Rome and led a highly successful career as a composer conductor teacher and organist. His compositions for a variety of instruments are exceptional Cantabile Et Scherzando for Trombone and Piano being no exception. As reflected in Cantabile Et Scherzando  Büsser's compositional style was sophisticated yet true to the 19th century French tradition. Elements of the Cantabile include include legato phrasing dotted rhythms and triplets superbly contrasted in the Scherzando by staccato rhythms a quick tempo and scalic passages. For all advanced Trombone players Büsser's Cantabile Et Scherzando is essential to a varied repertoire.

Composed by Jean-Michel Defaye in 1954  Deux Danses is the piece that put him under the international spotlight. Written for Trombone and Piano it quickly became standard for the Trombone repertoire and would fit advanced players? skills. The first part called ?Danse Sacrée? is a slow lyrical melody that is re-used through the piece until the cadenza and the second ?Danse Profane? has a samba rhythm with a really cheerful end. These two pieces both contain some basics of Jazz. As a pianist composer producer and arranger Jean-Michel Defaye mainly createdpieces for brass and wind instruments. He won the Premier Second Grand Prix de Rome in 1958 and the Belgian Queen Elizabeth composition competition in 1959.

French composer Alfred Désenclos (1912-1971) described his music as romantic. His music is expressive and atmospheric as heard in his Plain-Chant Et Allegretto for Trombone and Piano. Désenclos studied at the Roubaix Conservatory and he won the 1942 Prix de Rome. His Plain-Chant Et Allegretto was published in 1965 towards the end of the composer's life. A typical performance lasts around eight minutes in which the Trombone solo line is enhanced by rhythm and technique. As expected the two movements are contrasting suitable for the advanced trombonist. For all Tromboneplayers seeking alternative and challenging repertoire Désenclos' Plain-Chant Et Allegretto makes for a riveting performance.

Composed by Sigismond Stojowski  Fantaisie Op.38 is a piece for Trombone and Piano. This lyrical piece published in 1912 is very melodic and would require advanced skills and technique to perform it perfectly. This piece is one of the first he wrote after moving to the USA. Comparable to Chopin?s 'Fantasy' even though Stojowski?s seems better-written and more virtuous. A transcription exists for Viola and other instruments. Sigismond Stojowski is a Polish pianist composer and conductor who studied at the Paris Conservatoire. He was a good friend of Tchaikovsky and workedas a Piano soloist in the USA with the Boston and the San Francisco Symphony as well as the New York Philharmonic among others.

Concerto In F Minor by G.F. Handel is a piece transcribed for Trombone and Piano by André Lafosse soloist at the Paris Opera. Quite difficult for it to be played well this piece will require the skills and abilities of advanced players. This concerto is a really melodious piece to play in recitals. It is divided into four sections: I. Grave II. Allegro III. Sarabande – Largo IV. Allegro The Piano introduces first and the third parts which are quite slow compared to the second one and the final. G.F. Handel was a German composer famous for his operas oratorios and concertos.
