As a passionate composer organist and ornithologist many of Olivier Messiaen's works incorporate these three elements. However he took a different stance for his Thème et Variations for Violin and Piano composing it as a wedding present for his first wife Claire Delbos in 1932. The couple gave its first performance during the same year. Admitted to the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of eleven Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was an outstanding pupil winning many prizes. Thème et Variations was composed shortly after his appointment as titular organist at the Sainte Trinité church inParis and is often considered to be characteristic of his famous Quatour pour la fin du temps. Made up of a theme and five variations it begins simplistically before entering the complex variations. The theme is composed in common time and at a moderate tempo. Each variation varies in dynamics time signature tempo tonality and rhythm among other elements; however Messiaen cleverly retains suggestions of the theme all throughout. Challenging as it is Thème et Variations is an exciting varied and compelling performance piece for all advanced violinists.

Bohuslav Martinu wrote his first Violin Concerto in Paris in 1932 33 this work having been commissioned by the Violin virtuoso Samuel Dushkin. However it was never performed during the composer?s lifetime and was even considered lost after his death. It was not until 1961 that musicologist and collector Hans Moldenhauer bought it from Boaz Piller contrabassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Moldenhauer approached Czech violinist Josef Suk who gave the world premiere of the work with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Georg Solti in October 1973.This Piano reduction is based on the musical text of the first edition. White Sonata. This work is called White Sonata because it is played on the piano only on the white keys (C major - A minor). The subtitle refers to the child in all of us, regardless of age, who never wanted to grow up, but was forced to do so. With reference to the title of Peter Pan, the theme has to do with the shattered innocence of children who are subjected to abuse and decide to take refuge in themselves. Written around a lullaby, it refers to how to build an inner world to survive.

Maurice Hauchard (1870-1957) was a French violinist and composer. As a minor composer often in the shadow of his contemporary Maurice Ravel much of Hauchard's music is not widely known. However his Pour distraire petit père is a charming suite perfect for beginners. As an excellent versatile musician Hauchard loved his art and remains one of the greatest contributors to music education. Pour distraire petit père which translates as 'to distract little Father' is a collection of twelve easy pieces for Violin and Piano accompaniment. Each movement is varied in tempo time and keysignatures articulation and rhythm making for an exciting compilation for the student. All beginners should play this quirky Hauchard suite for its engaging contrasts and distinction.

Par DAVIS OLIVER. 'For many years the violinist Kerenza Peacock and I have been discussing the concept of a piece about trees. One day I received in the post from her a book by Annie Davidson entitled, ‘How to be More Tree’. This brilliant book became the inspiration for the Arboretum Suite. The first tree I decided to write about was Aspen. I read that Aspen trees work together sharing water and nutrients through their root system, so only as a community can they grow in strength. Aspen is followed by Açai Palm, a tree which is native to Brazil and Argentina, hence the Latin American feel of this movement. The score is marked pizzicato, the plucked sound further accentuating the South American rhythms. The Vanishing Mahogany of the Amazon naturally has a very sombre feel, although the major key ending of this movement reflects the hope that we may still manage to save the rain forests. The last movement describes my response to the description of the Mountain Hemlock.
