Johannes Brahms:The Works for one Instrument and PianoJohannes Brahms' compositi...(+)
Johannes Brahms:The Works for one Instrument and PianoJohannes Brahms' compositions for one instrument and piano have been standards in chamber music literature ever since their inception. These works were written with specific performers in mind and Brahms worked closely with them when refining the final texts. Nevertheless, we rarely approach the music taking into consideration the possibilities of the instruments for which Brahms wrote or the performing practices of the individual players who first performed these compositions, including Brahms himself. The New Urtext EditionsBärenreiter's pioneering new scholarly-critical editions of Brahms' works for one instrument and piano are edited by a team of musicologists who are also performers. They offer today's musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources, but also a comprehensive approach to the works, which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers. In addition to the musical text these editions offer an informative Introduction laying out the genesis, publication history and reception of the works. At the same time there is a complete list of the sources, an explanation of the editorial procedures and a Critical Commentary. Also, each volume contains a detailed discussion of specific performing practice issues raised by individual works. An integral part of Bärenreiter's Brahms publication complex is a text booklet which approaches general performance practice issues of the 19th century with regard to e.g. tempo, rubato, rhythmic flexibility and articulation. Furthermore musicians will find valuable information concerning vibrato, portamento and bowing. Last but not least characteristics of Brahms' own piano playing as well as that of his circle and contemporaries are discussed. The violin and viola sonata editions come not only with an Urtext part freed from all editorial emendations, but also with an additional part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of Joseph Joachim and his colleagues. These markings especially draw on publications of the sonatas edited by Joachim's pupils Leopold Auer and Ossip Schnirlin as well as those by Brahms' associate Franz Kneisel. A similar approach has been used for the violoncello sonatas, drawing on performance markings by Robert Hausmann (for whom Brahms wrote the Sonata in F major), Hugo Becker, with whom Brahms performed it, and Julius Klengel who was also close to his circle.Bärenreiter's new Brahms complex also importantly brings two neglected works back into the player's hands, namely the splendid versions of the op. 120 sonatas, originally written for viola or clarinet and piano. Brahms' arrangements for violin and piano unaccountably disappeared from the standard repertoire early in the 20th century. In these versions Brahms did not simply adjust the solo part for the violin, he made many alterations to the piano part, casting thought-provoking light on the clarinet and viola versions.- A pioneering set of Urtext editions- String editions include an Urtext solo part and a second part with fingering as well as performance markings- Each edition offers a preface on performance practice aspects pertaining to the respective works- A separate text booklet includes pioneering texts on general issues of performance practice in the 19th century as well as on specific issues with regard to Johannes Brahms' chamber music / Violon Et Piano

Par DVORAK ANTONIN. On 18 January 1887 Antonín Dvorák (1841–1904) started composing his Romantic Pieces for violin and piano, opus 75 (B 150), completing that version on 25 January. They were performed for the first time in a private house two days later, with the composer writing to his publisher in Berlin: ‘Played here yesterday and very well received.’
For this edition reference has been made to a copy of the original manuscript and to the first edition. The small number of bow markings in the violin part of the piano score are original and have been left unaltered.
These four contrasting movements are a welcome addition to the violin repertoire and a very effective alternative to Dvorák’s large-scale violin works, the Concerto in A minor and Romance in F minor. / Niveau : Avancé / Répertoire / Violon et Piano

Ravel, Maurice Tzigane Concert rhapsody for violin and piano In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim, Jelly D?Aranyi, in concert in London. Following the performance, Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D?Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin, probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel?s virtuoso classic ?Tzigane?. Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano, producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon), the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel later orchestrated ?Tzigane? and both versions remain a ?must? for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. Jelly D?Aranyi performed both versions regularly throughout her long career. This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel?s masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version, complete with full score and performance material, as well as in the composer?s earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition; one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of ?Tzigane? from the estate of Jelly D?Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection. The version for piano and violin contains, besides the Urtext part, a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D?Aranyi. D?Aranyi?s alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice. The cooperation between Ravel and D?Aranyi is comparable to that of Brahms and Joachim working on the Brahms violin concerto. - First scholarly-critical Urtext edition of the work - Presented are both versions: for violin and orchestra and for violin and piano - Includes Jelly D?Aranyi?s fingering

Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Beethoven’s Sonatas for Pianoforte and Violin are now available at a special set price. The set consists of volume I (BA 9014) and volume II (BA 9015).
Beethoven’s ten sonatas for piano and violin, along with those by Mozart, constitute the heart of this classical music genre. Following the lead of Mozart’s late sonatas, Beethoven lets the violin part become increasingly independent from the piano part.
Not only does Clive Brown’s scholarly critical edition offer a meticulously edited text but for the first time it presents a list of sources and a Critical Report. Furthermore Brown documents a great number of passages where, by today’s standards, the notation raises some questions. These passages had previously been overlooked in the autograph but their significance is now clarified.
One example can be found in Beethoven’s “Tempo di Minuetto” from Sonata op. 30 No. 3, where he uses a notational idiosyncracy based on C.P.E. Bach’s “Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen” to denote a rest. This musical symbol, which was included in the first edition published during Beethoven’s lifetime, has not been addressed in any modern edition to date.
In addition, a score through a chord can also not be found in previous modern editions - this denotes an arpeggiated chord./ Recueil / Violon et Piano

Cesar Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck's correspondence proves that he was directly involved in the printing of the sonata. Consequently, our new scholarly performing edition draws mainly on the first edition of the separate violin part. For the piano part, the first edition of the version for violoncello and piano, which appeared during Franck's lifetime, was an important source as many engraver's errors found in the first printing of the violin version had been corrected in this violoncello version. In addition to these sources, both autograph scores of the violin sonata (Franck's working copy and his fair copy) were consulted to clarify questionable readings.Bärenreiter's new edition also includes two short separate movements for the same instrumentation: the early 'Andantino quietoso? op. 6 (1843), a hauntingly beautiful piece composed for performances with Franck's violinist brother Joseph, as well as 'Mélancolie?, first published after Franck's death in 1911. This second piece is based on a solfège exercise and written at the height of the composer's creative powers, at about the same time as his famous violin sonata. The edition is rounded off by an informative text on the genesis and reception history of the three compositions (Ger/Fr/Eng), a complete list of sources, editorial notes and a Critical Commentary (Eng).- Pioneering new Urtext edition- Informative text on the genesis and reception history of the sonata and its versions (Ger/Fr/Eng)- Two small individual movements for violin and piano published for the first time- Detailed Critical Commentary (Eng) / Violon Et Piano

Three Pieces For Violin And Piano Op.11 were the first works to be written by composer Ian Venables after he moved to Worcestershire in 1986. The pieces, Pastorale, Romance and Dance have been called some of the most beautiful pieces for Violin and Piano ever composed.Brimming with melodic invention and radiant lyricism, the music of Three Pieces For Violin And Piano is both rich and varied. Pastorale begins the interplay between the Violin and the Piano with a beautifully relaxing melodic accord, with an Elgarian influence firmly on its sleeve. Romance exhibits the best kind of artistic simplicity, a musical love-letter featuring an achingly heartbreaking conversation between the two instruments, often ambiguous in its outlook. Dance concludes the Three Pieces with a rhythmically upbeat melody laden with staccato that unfolds into a lovely harmonic concordance, a fitting end to this series of dialogue between the Violin and Piano.Ian Venables' Three Pieces For Violin And Piano Op.11 is a beautifully composed work that is guaranteed to have audiences craving more of such a lovely interplay of these two instruments. / Violon Et Piano

Bohuslav Martinu wrote his First Violin Concerto in Paris in 1932-33, this work having been commissioned by the violin virtuoso Samuel Dushkin. However, it was never performed during the composer's lifetime and was even considered lost after his death. It was not until 1961 that musicologist and collector Hans Moldenhauer bought it from Boaz Piller, contrabassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Moldenhauer approached Czech violinist Josef Suk, who gave the world premiere of the work with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Georg Solti in October 1973.This piano reduction is based on the musical text of the first edition. The solo part has been revised by a leading Czech violinist and performer of Martinu's music. - Major violin concerto of the 20th century - New Foreword by Martinu scholar Sandra Bergmannová (Cz/Eng/Ger) / Violon Et Piano

Introduktion und Variationen D802. Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. Originally for flute and piano, Schubert's reworking of 'Trockne Blumen' - the eighteenth song in his song cycle Die schöne Müllerin - is here adapted for the violin. It was quite common in Schubert's own time for composers to write works 'for flute or violin' and in keeping with this practice, violinist Jacqueline Ross has prepared this edition, along with notes on the musical background and critical commentary on the violin editing. Her research into 18th and early 19th century performance practice has been widely recognised and has influenced her recordings of baroque and classical repertoire. This includes the Naxos release of the complete works of Schubert, recorded on historical instruments, in which this adaptation of 'Trockne Blumen' is featured. Violinists will welcome this adaptation intended primarily for performers, as a vibrant and substantial addition to the repertoire.
