Among the best of Jean Sibelius’ oeuvre are his 1917 compositions the Humoresques. This fabulous and charming concerto was divided into two groups for publication Opus 87 and Opus 89 and demonstrates his sublime skill with the Violin. He used a considerably smaller Orchestra accompaniment to the Violin in the second group but maintained the subtlety of depth and texture. Though there are traditional elements to all parts of this opus Humoresque No. 4 harks back to the past the most reminiscent of the delicacy of mid-nineteenth century musical miniatures. Virtuosic and challenging the soloist has the opportunity to indulge in a more traditionallyexhibitionistic display. The piece is based on a single lyrical melody which is reminiscent of the late romantic style - although it is never presented in a traditional manner. The piece begins quietly like a singer trying to sing but caught up in her own tears. At a crucial point in the piece the restrained silence is broken unleashing a savage presto. Pavana – Capricho is one of the last pieces from Isaac Albeniz’s early period before he turned to Spanish influences – a style that would characterise the rest of his compositions. In this earlier period Albeniz who was a child prodigy on the Piano composed ‘salon style’ music and experimented with traditional styles in the manner of Rameau Bach Beethoven Chopin and Liszt. His shift towards Spanish music occurred after meeting the teacher and composer Felipe Pedrell a leading figure in the development of nationalist Spanish music.Pavana-Capricho is graceful andlight-hearted at the same time. The playfulness that arises from the alternating moods is best achieved when the proper technique and articulation is applied. Arranged for Violin and Piano and with a performance time of ca. 3:30 this piece of Romantic chamber-music is a perfect addition to any concert programme.

Strausss Violin Sonata Op. 18 from 1887 is the last and most popular of his five instrumental chamber pieces. Based on traditional sonata form this expressive piece contains distinctive Straussian characteristics evident in his later symphonic settings and operas. Strauss appreciated this work very much and performed it often.
