Op. 33 for Brass Quintet. Commissioned by the Three Choirs Festival 1992 and premiered by the London Gabrieli Brass Consort.This is a short piece for brass quintet in one movement. The polyphony of the introduction gives wayto massed chords which in turn lead to the first main section. This is a funeral march during which all the instruments have solos in turn. The trombone is first then trumpet I; horn; later in duet with trumpet II; finallythere is long solo for the tuba.The second section is a series of fanfares on trumpets joined by the horn which alternate with successive phrases of a chorale melody on the lower instruments - horn trombone and tuba. MitFried and Freud ich far dahin is Martin Luther’s masterly and very beautiful re-creation in German of the Nunc dimittus. The massed chords of the introduction then return and the piece ends with the polyphony with which itbegan.Parts available: SOS04782

Full Score.This work was composed in 1964 at the request of the well known American tuba player Roger Bobo. It was soon taken into the repertoire of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble who gave the first BBC broadcast. The first recording was on Pye records by the Hallé Brass Ensemble. Since then it has become a regular repertoire piece and recorded as well as broadcast all over the world.The Suite consists of five movements all illustrating aspects of the Burlesque Theatre Music Hall circus and cabaret so popular at the end of the 19th century and into the 20th. The titlesof the short movements are: Soubrette Song Trick Cyclists Adagio Team Soft Shoe Shuffle and Les Girls.The five orchestral brass instruments (two trumpets horn trombone and tuba) are exploited in a chamber music manner but the cumulative effect has a theatrical quality in keeping with the title.

Two fantastic pieces; J.S. Bach's Jesu Joy Of Man's Desiring and Vivaldi's Allegro from Double Trumpet Concerto. In both of these Baroque Gems it is essential that an appropriate tempo is set immediately and maintained without effort. The arranger suggests metronome values around 84 for the Bach piece and 116 for the Vivaldi.In the Bach always have awareness of where the melody lies and give careful consideration to whether the dotted quaver - semiquaver rhythm is played with a triplet feel or in strict time. In the Vivaldi the solo parts could be played on just about any pitch of Trumpet though it would be best if the twosoloists could use the same pitch of Trumpet whatever that may be. Players that own natural Trumpets and never play them might see this as an ideal opportunity to let them off!The Latin section needs to be played with good rhythm and a sense of fun. The shock notes is Trumpets Horn and Trombone bars 73-74 are best omitted unless absolutely tight.

London Rags is largely based on two patriotic tunes God Save The Queen and Rule Britannia. These are used in blues and ragtime transformations and the melodies are not complete until they appear in the form of a classical rag in G major at the end. Commissioned by London Brass at the suggestion of Philip Jones. The first performance was at the Queen Elizabeth Hall London 16 December 1986. Scored for 2 Trumpets Horn Tenor Trombone and Tuba. The piece The Farthest Shore was expertly composed by British composer Paul Mealor. The Farthest Shore was commissioned by the John Armitage Memorial Trust St Davids Festival and Edinburgh Royal Choral Union and first performed at St Cuthbert's Church Edinburgh conducted by Michael Bawtree.Mealor was catapulted to international attention when 2.5 billion people heard his motet Ubi caritas performed at the Royal Wedding Ceremony of His Royal Highness Prince William and Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey 29th April 2011.

This is exactly the kind of music we find in this newly written composition.
