When 18th century British composer Thomas Arne included his song Rule Britannia! in a masque based on the life of Alfred the Great that was presented at Cliveden the country home of Frederick Prince of Wales he could not have imagined that more than two hundred seventy years later his ditty would be known throughout the British Isles and beyond. Rule Britannia! is widely used in the Royal Navy and British Army and is featured each year at the Last Night of the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall as a national sing-along.At the time of writing the Dutch actually ‘ruled the waves ’ so this song was more an exhortation than a status report. The lyrics were also a statement ofcivil liberty. Since Cromwell’s time Britain had had a standing army which could be turned against the native population. A standing navy however existed solely to protect the nation from invaders protecting a free populace.Rule Britannia! has been quoted extensively by other composers among them Beethoven Wagner Strauss and Arthur Sullivan. Thomas Arne also penned a version of God Save The King which came to be the British national anthem.

The work is divided into six sections opening with a lively description of Samson himself. It explains his enormous strength and outlines his prowess on the field of battle. Frederic Staton (1884-1961)was a British organist composer adjudicator and pedagogue. Born in Yorkshire he was a Parish organist and Choirmaster in Chesterfield from 1899 onwards and also conducted several music societies and orchestras in the 1920s and30s. He was an early examiner for the ABRSM and spent the Second World War in Canada and New Zealand after travelling overseas to examine and adjudicate at Music Festivals. In 1942 he published Sweet Singing In TheChoir a popular handbook of choral technique.

Rolling Down To Rio first appeared in The Beginning of the Armadillos one of the Just So stories by Rudyard Kipling. It was set to music in 1903 by Edward German arranged for unison or solo Voice with Piano accompaniment. The arrangement has remained highly popular ever since.Edward German was an English musician and composer of Welsh descent best remembered for his extensive output of incidental music for the stage and as a successor to Arthur Sullivan in the field of English comic opera. While French influences are clearly apparent in his music all in all his style is usually considered to be‘quintessentially English’.

A free-and-easy style of performance is appropriate for this extremely popular cantata-musical about Jonah and the whale. The score is for unison voices narrator and piano (with chord symbols).
