The collection of nine Vedic Hymns (Op. 24) for solo Voice with Piano accompaniment marked a turning point in Holst's compositions. They were inspired by Hindu scripture and Indian raga, and first published in1908. Vac (Speech) is the seventh movement, and is the first of the third group of hymns, where the theme shifts into the human sphere.
Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer and teacher.Having studied under Stanford and Parry, he became a close friend of Vaughan Williams - they would often critique each other's work - and influenced composers such as Tippet and Britten. He is best remembered for hisPlanets suite.

My lecture of the Winterreise does not demand a new expressive interpretation, but instead systematically exercises the freedom which all interpreters allow themselves intuitively, such as: instrumental dilation i. e. acceleration of the pace, transposition into other keys and elaboration of characteristic color timbres. In addition, there are further ways of reading; the music; jumping around in the text, repeating certain lines, interrupting the continuity, comparing different expressions of the same phrase ... All these new possibilities are subjected to my compositional discipline and form autonomous formal processes which are imposed on Schuberts original. Alma Mahler (1879-1964) ist ohne Zweifel eine der schillerndsten Personlichkeiten ihrer Zeit, die bis heute nichts an ihrer Faszination verloren hat. ,,Sie gehort zu den ganz wenigen Zauberfrauen, die es gibt, sagte der Schriftsteller Franz Werfel, ihr dritter Ehemann nach Gustav Mahler und Walter Gropius. Manner scheinen ihr Lebensinhalt gewesen zu sein: geniale Manner - mit und ohne Trauschein. Sie selbst liess gern durchblicken, wie lang ihre private Eroberungsliste war ... Alma ist und bleibt ein Unikum der Kulturgeschichte, doch aufgrund ihres Rufes als ,,Femme fatale und ihres extravaganten Wesens wird leider allzu oft ausser Acht gelassen, dass sie selbst wunderbare Kompositionen hervorgebracht hat, sehr gebildet war und die Gabe besass, nicht nur Manner zu verzaubern. In einer Zeit, wo Frauen noch keineswegs gleichberechtigt waren, lebte Alma nach dem Motto: ,,Jeder Mensch kann alles - aber er muss auch zu allem bereit sein. Bei der Komposition der Alma Phantasien habe ich mich von der bemerkenswerten Alma inspirieren lassen, mein Ohr in deren Zeit versetzt und das Gehorte in ihre eigene Tonsprache ubersetzt. Dabei habe ich in meine Kompositionen zwei kurze musikalische Zitate aus Alma Mahlers Werken eingeflochten, namlich aus Die stille Stadt und Ich wandle unter Blumen . Der Text stammt aus Alma Mahlers Tagebucheintragungen und handelt von zwei Mannern, die Alma Mahlers Leben pragten: Alexander Zemlinsky und Gustav Mahler. Of all his symphonies, Mahler gave the Fourth, his favorite and problem child, his most particular attention. The Heavenly Life, a humoresque composed in 1892 for soprano and piano, which he already wanted to use in the final movement of the Third Symphony under the title What the Child Tells Me, ultimately became the nucleus and final movement of the Fourth. Even after publication in 1901, Mahler kept repeatedly refining the orchestration. His maxim not without my retouching led to a whole series of revised reprints. It is probably no coincidence that Mahler performed especially the Fourth Symphony in his last two New York concerts in February 1911, using this opportunity to review once again the score and parts. This performance material with his retouching served as the main source for the new edition. Furthermore, included for the first time were corrections and annotations in conjunction with performances of the Fourth, which Mahler entered into the scores of conductors such as Mengelberg and Wickenhauser. PB 5664 has been awarded the Presto Sheet Music Award 2020.
