(Notturno)-One of only a few Piano Solos composed by Britten written as a test piece for the very first Leeds Piano Competition. It is a moody disturbed nocturn and seems deceptively simple but the skill is in the nuances of touch and rhythm to evoke the sense of dark and foreboding.

This musical work Moderato And Nocturne is from the rejected work Sonatina Romantica. Although Britten himself rejected the whole work his Trustees felt that the first 2 movements (the Moderato And Nocturne) have both 'character and charm' and could play an inportant and useful role in teaching pieces.
