Today the Gloria RV 589 (BA 7674) is one of Vivaldi?s best-known compositions and one of the most frequently performed sacred vocal works from the Baroque period.Vivaldi wrote the ?Gloria? as a self-contained work in the style of a concertante mass. However it was probably also performed within church services. The scoring of the solo voices (SSA) suggests that the work was written during his period at the Ospedale della Piet around 1716. In the twelve movements of the ?Gloria? Vivaldi displays the whole range of his mastery from festive sublime outer movements to tender transparently scored solopassages.The same mastery has also been applied to the ? Kyrie? RV 587 (BA 8950) scored for two choirs and two groups of stringed instruments. The date of its composition remains unclear. It is a purely a choral work without solo passages.Both works can be performed independently but can also be combined as a kind of short mass. Although the authenticity of the autograph manuscript score is beyond doubt these new editions contain some re-evaluations in phrasing and performance practice which go beyond what other editions have to offer. The autograph of the Missa brevis K.192 (186f) known as the Little Credo Mass (because of the Credo calls interspersed in the text of the third movement) is dated Salzburg 24 June 1774. This Mass intended for Sundays and minor feasts was in any case written for Salzburg Cathedral in the archives of which is preserved an authentic set of parts containing markings by Mozart and his father. When the master journeyed to Paris in 1777 he took the autograph of this work along with him leaving it with the canons of Heilig Geist Kloster in Augsburg to have parts copied out.According to Abert (who wrote a classic biography of Mozart) this work is considered 'by manyto be the high point of Mozart's 'youthful Masses'' and 'as far as the motivic unity of the individual movements and the strengthening of the contrapuntal element is concerned goes far beyond everything composed hitherto'.Urtext of the New Mozart EditionFull score performance material (BA4770) and vocal score (BA4770-90) available for sale.

Op. 38. Par ELGAR EDWARD. This is the best of me, wrote Edward Elgar after the final measure of his Dream of Gerontius. Premiered in 1900, in Great Britain the work has long been a standard work in the repertoire of large oratorio choirs. Elgar?s moving, poetic setting of the eponymous poem by Cardinal John Henry Newman is about a dying man and his journey beyond death to God. Before the eyes of the listeners, a musical image of the soul is created which flies past mocking demons to God with its protecting angel at its side, is allowed to look at him briefly, then faces the purgatorial fire of salvation confident and comforted. The work is a real rarity in the history of oratorio, and for large choirs it is a thrilling alternative to the established repertoire of Requiem settings. Its popularity is thanks to the suggestive, often sensuous power of the music, the great choral scenes of the demons and the Angel, and the three impressive solo parts. All previous editions were reprints based on the historic first printed materials, which are inconsistent. By contrast, Carus has produced a modern, newly-engraved edition, compatible in all sections, which takes all the sources into consideration and evaluates the autograph manuscript in detail.
