Susannah, My Old Kentucky Home en Beautiful Dreamer schreef, waren erop gericht de zwarte Amerikaanse slaven een menselijker gezicht te geven.Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair schreef hij echter naar aanleiding van de afwezigheid van zijn vrouw toen hij in New York en zij in Pittsburgh woonde. De melancholie van de song komt in dit arrangement van Philip Sparkeprachtig naar voren.

Viele seiner Lieder handeln von der Befreiung der Sklaven, dieses Lied widmete er jedoch seiner Frau während einer langen, unfreiwilligen Trennung von Ihr. There is a popular misconception that Stephen Collins Foster (1826—1864) found success as a song-writer writing many of his songs aiming to ‘humanise’ the black American slaves. He was a meticulous worker and sometimes spent months perfecting the lyrics of a song. His first success was Oh! Susanna (1848) and as his popularity grew he moved with his young family to New York to be near his publishers. This was not a success and Jane, his wife and Marion, his daughter, moved back to Pittsburgh in 1854. Foster wrote Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair as a result of her continued absence. Philip Sparke’s arrangement of this beautiful song will make an excellent slowinterlude in any concert.

The motivation for composing this test piece for the Concert Division Brassband of the 2001 WMC was Rob Goorhuis's deep respect for one of the greatest Dutch composers of the 20-th century who also enlarged the wind band repertoire in a most valuable way.
Goorhuis wanted to light up the soft and kind side of the brassband and wrote about this composition : The basis is a theme of twelve tones wich Badings once played at an International Organ Improvisation Contest in Haarlem.
My organ teacher participated in that contest and so the theme remained somehow in the back of my mind. The composer worked out a series of variations and clustered them into bundles ofthree and so the melody kept its diversity while remaining easy to recognise.

Aan de basis van dit verplichte werk voor de concertafdeling Brassband WMC 2001 lag de eerbied van Rob Goorhuis voor één van de grootste Nederlandse componisten uit de 20e eeuw die trouwens ook veel voor de blaasmuziekwereld heeftbetekend.
Goorhuis wilde de zachtaardige kant van de brassband belichten en zegt hierover:De basis is een thema van 12 tonen dat Badings ooit heeft bedacht voor het Internationale Orgelimprovisatie Concours in Haarlem.
Mijnorgeldocent nam destijds ook aan dat concours deel en dat thema is op één of andere manier in mijn achterhoofd blijven hangen.
De componist bedacht een reeks variaties en clusterde ze in bundels van drie, zo bleef de melodiedivers, maar toch herkenbaar.

Saying Goodbye is one of a series of original works in pop, rock and swing styles Philip Sparke has composed to try and give brass bands their own popular vocabulary and identity. It could be described as happy-sad in mood, a feature of much of Sparke’s slower music. A perfect light addition for your concert.

A Stroll in the Park is een werk in de traditie van ‘lopende’ muziek (zoals Promenade uit Moessorgski’s Schilderijententoonstelling of Walking the Dog uit Gershwin’s Shall we Dance?). Het beschrijft de genoegensvan een ontspannen wandeling in een stadspark op een zomerse zondagmiddag. De Engelse uitdrukking ‘a walk in the park’ of ‘a stroll in the park’ kan de betekenis hebben van ‘iets betrekkelijk eenvoudigs’ - en daarin ligt een duidelijkeaanwijzing over de manier waarop dit werk gespeeld moet worden: ontspannen, zorgeloos en relaxed.

Saying Goodbye ist ein Stück aus einer Reihe von Originalwerken in Pop-, Rock- und Swingstilen, die Philip Sparke komponierte, um Brass Bands mit einer eigenen populären Sprache und Identität auszustatten. Die Stimmung lässt sich als fröhlich-traurig beschreiben, ein Merkmal, das in Sparkes langsamerer Musik oft zu finden ist. Ein originelles neues Werk, das in Ihrem unterhaltsamen Repertoire nicht fehlen sollte!

A Stroll in the Park (“Fl nerie dans le parc”) s’inscrit dans la lignée des fl neries musicales telles que la Promenade extraite des Tableaux d’une Exposition de Moussorgski ou encore Walking the Dog extrait de Shall we Dance? de George Gershwin. La musique décrit les plaisirs et les vertus d’une promenade improvisée dans un parc un dimanche après-midi au cœur de l’été.Promenade ou fl nerie ? Peu importe le terme choisi, pourvu que le style d’interprétation soit décontracté, insouciant et léger.
