The first three movements of Johannes Brahms? E Minor Cello Sonata were composed in 1862 the last movement was written in 1865. During the first years of its performance the work was received with mixed enthusiasm. By the end of Brahms? life however it was widely performed and by the first decades of the 20th century it was firmly embedded in the repertoire of many distinguished cellists. It was notably Robert Hausmann?s advocacy of the work which seems to have contributed greatly to its promotion.Of particular value to the editors were the three early performance editions of the Cello Sonata Op.38 by Cornelius van Vliet andEdwin Hughes Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg as well as Julius Klengel. The cellists? van Vliet Becker and Klengel?s fingering and bowing allows for a better understanding of their performance practice. As such the Bärenreiter edition comes with a Cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms? contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked urtext part.An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. for Violoncello and Piano-Cesar Franck?s Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the Violin repertoire a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck?s friend the cellist Jules Desart was so impressed when he heard the Violin Sonata performed at the Société nationale de musique in Paris that he adapted the work for his instrument. This arrangement was first published in 1887 by inserting the Cello part into the Piano score of the original edition. For this purpose thePiano score had received a new cover and the publisher had expanded the title of the composition to ?Sonate pour Piano et Violon ou Violoncelle?. This version by the cellist Jules Delsart for Piano and Violoncello is the only arrangement of the work authorized by the composer and its first edition represents the main source for Bärenreiter?s new scholarly-critical publication.This Barenreiter edition also includes a separate movement ?Mélancolie? first published after Franck?s death in 1911 again for the same instrumentation Piano and Violin or Violoncello. Leos Janacek wrote only two works for cello and piano of which only Pohadka (Fairy Tale) became established in the concert repertoire. Although he completed the work the composer did not want to have it published. The history of the work’s composition is long and complicated. Janacek began writing the work before 1910 however the Pohadka (Fairy Tale) only received its final form after a series of corrections in 1923. The second composition the Presto is incomplete. Only a sketch exists which Janacek did not develop further. The original tempo marking of Allegro was changed by Janacek himself to Presto. The work has beendiscussed under this title in recent Janacek literature. In the supplement of this edition an early version of A Tale is included. The source to this version is a copy owned by Antonin Vana one of the first interpreters of the composition. The early version of A Tale offers a valuable and interesting alternative to today’s known version with its marked differences such as the considerably changed ending of the first movement and the original form of four movements. Par AHO KALEVI. Kalevi Aho's (b. 1949) concerto no. 2 for cello and orchestra (2013) is in five movements performed without a break. It begins with a swinging Berceuse, followed by a very quick, virtuosic Presto in 5/8 time. The heart of the concerto is the cadenza-like third movement, Adagio, dominated throughout by the soloist. A fairly short Allegretto is followed by the closing Epilogue. This has flashbacks to the opening movement, and they lead to a cadenza in which the soloist plays only flageolet notes and pizzicatos. The concerto ends with a virtuosic coda in 5/8 time evocative of the second movement. Arto Noras gave the concerto its first performance with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä in Naantali on June 5, 2014. It was a joint commission from the Naantali Music Festival and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. This product consists of the solo part (18 pages) and piano reduction by Kari Vehmanen (62 pages) - have a look inside by clicking “sample”. The concerto is scored for a fairly small orchestra.
