Take Your Bow is a collection of 20 concert pieces for beginner string players written by Celia Cobb and Naomi Yandell. Years of string teaching have given them the inspiration to produce pieces which will both delight and engage. Their imaginative writing strengthens rhythmic and stylistic concepts whilst employing a variety of adventurous playing techniques that students will find to be a fun and achievable challenge. Each piece is compatible with any of the other instruments in the series in any combination making it an excellent resource for individual or group teaching. 12 Recital Pieces in First Position for Cello and Piano or Two Celli-Charming collections of easy pieces in first position. Each Cello part is supported by a Piano accompaniment for student performances. Alternately a second Cello part allows duo playing with the teacher during lessons. This early introduction to chamber music brings joy and satisfaction to the young cellist and teaches the student to hear the music as a whole. The two volumes are designed as companion publications to the Early Start on the Cello method. However they work equally well as a supplement to any other Cello method. A variety of rarely published works by well-known cellists and pedagogues such as Wilhelm Fitzenhagen HugoSchlemüller and August Nölck make these publications attractive to teachers and students. The Cello Recital Album Volume 1 can be used as a supplement to the Early Start on the Cello method Volumes 1 and 2 (BA 8996 and BA 8997). The 18 pieces in Volume 1 are structured to follow the same progression of finger patterns introduced in the Early Start method. This systematic progression helps the student to solidify the hand position and improve intonation. The basic bowing techniques do not require changes in bow speed or sounding point. The young performer can focus on a straight and beautifully placed bow that produces a pleasing and clear sound. The Cello Recital Album Volume 2 can be used as a supplement to the Early Start on the Cello method Volumes 2 and 3 (BA 8997 and BA 8998). The 12 pieces in Volume 2 are structured to follow the same progression of finger patterns introduced in the Early Start method Volumes 2 and 3. The later repertoire in this volume includes a careful introduction of downward and upward extensions.

In memory of Christopher Rowland. Originally a concerto for Cello and chamber orchestra now for Cello with a Piano reduction of the orchestral part.The concerto is in four movements which are played without a break: Meditation Intermezzo Toccata-Scherzo and Song. The work lasts for some 18 minutes and was scored for two oboes two horns timpani (doubling tubular bells) and strings(found here in a Cello/Piano form). It is organised in one large arch-shaped structure with two fast inner movements flanked by two outer slow ones. The solo cello opens the work reflectively and introduces core melodic material which is continuously developed throughout theconcerto. Gradually the strings enter then wind and timpani and build a pyramid twelve-note chord at the peak of which there is a dramatic climax. The music then subsides (solo cello again) but links to the two faster middle movements. The second movement Intermezzo has an ABA structure and in its middle section quotes the opening of Shostakovich's Third String Quartet (written in the same year as Christopher Rowland was born!). Indeed the ghost of Shostakovich looms large throughout the concerto in more ways than one. The Toccata-Scherzo is energetic and rhythmically-charged again using an ABA structure. Here the writing for solo cello is quite virtuosic but not I hope in a shallow sense. The music builds inexorably towards a powerful climax underpinned by the opening twelve-note chord's re-appearance together with a violent outburst from the timpani at which point a tonal resolution (on G) arrives through a pianissimo held chord on strings which leads directly to the final movement - Song. And so the music arrives at its emotional heart through a simple melody (present in other forms throughout the work) announced by solo cello at the very top of its register against a quiet backdrop of horns and strings. Fantasia transcribed for violoncello and piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus-Born in Erfurt the composer Edward Mollenhauer (1827 1914) achieved success in America as a soloist and teacher. His best-known pieces for young violinists are The Infant Paganini and The Boy Paganini. Both appear here in their original version for Violin and Piano and for the first time in a transcription for Cello and Piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus.The Mollenhauer fantasia The Infant Paganini is a charming introduction to early virtuoso techniques. It calls for bowing techniques such as detaché legato spiccato and arpeggios over three strings. Players are also expected to play harmonics andpizzicato.It (BA 10693) can be mastered by young Cello students who are working with volume 4 of the Sassmannshaus Early Start on the Cello and can manage first to fourth position.The Boy Paganini is an impressive concert piece which is more demanding. Its two movements call for changes of metre harmonics and pizzicato. Other challenges include chords on all four strings and simple passages in octaves. Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) probably was the greatest cello virtuoso of his time and compared to Paganini in his lifetime. He gave cello lessons at the famous Conservatoire de Paris among others.Romberg's popular Trio in E minor originally was the first part of the Trois Trios d'une Difficulté Progressive pour le Violoncelle Viola et Violoncelle Op. 38. The solo violoncello was accompanied by a viola and a second violoncello. The two other trios are much more difficult, with a lot of passage work, thumb position, tenor and violin clef.The Trio in E minor Op. 38/1 was arranged many times and scored for various combinations of instruments. The Romanian Folk Dances undoubtedly rank amongst Bartok's most popular compositions. The earliest version is scored for Piano (1915) and was published by Universal Edition is 1918. The composer himself orchestrated this version in 1917. Several other chamber music arrangements (for example Zoltan Szekely's version for Violin and Piano) were not by Bartok although he authorised them. The musical material derives from Bartok's collections of folk music which date right back to 1904 when he wrote down a melody sung by a Hungarian peasant girl. In the course of extensive travels throughout Eastern Europe Bartokcompiled an enormous collection of folk tunes (by 1918 his collection comprised no fewer than 2700 Hungarian 3500 Romanian and 3000 Slovak dances and songs) which would in all probability have been lost had Bartok not written them down. As it was some of them found their way into his compositions. In 1908 Bartok jotted down tunes in Transylvania. They are the source of Romanian Folk Dances.

Nocturnes is a set of four studies for Cello and Piano by Bohuslav Martinu. These four pieces can be played for a recital or a contest separately or following one another by upper-intermediate players and above. This volume features:  I. Andantino moderato – two first parts starting with a solo of Piano including many accidentals some trills and some pizzicatos  II. Lento– starts by an exchange of sets of chords between the Piano and the Cello which is played a second time at the end of the piece  III. Moderato –starts by the Piano on its own which is the joined by the Cello  IV. Allegretto moderato – swapping from pizzicato to bow few times in the suite  Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) is a Czech composer and a violinist. Even though he was interested in different genres (including Romanticism Jazz and Expressionism) he wrote mainly neo-classical pieces including 16 symphonies 14 ballets and 15 operas.

for Violoncello and Piano-After the great success of his Élégie (HN 563) Fauré?s publisher Hamelle urged him to write another similarly effective piece for cello and piano. Papillon was probably already composed in 1884 though it was only published in1898. Whereas Fauré just wanted to call it ?Piece for violoncello? his publisher insisted on a more evocative title and ultimately succeeded in giving it its present name (meaning ?butterfly?). But Fauré is said to have beenindignant remarking: ?Butterfly or dung fly use whatever you want?. The success of the work proved Hamelle right Papillon is today just as popular with cellists as the Élegie and is now available as a Henle Urtext edition.

Beethoven's composition of sonatas for Cello and Piano was unprecedented; he had no models in the works of Haydn or Mozart. Only recently had the instrument begun to liberate itself from its role in the traditional basso continuo. The first two Sonatas in this book comprising Op. 5 were composed in 1796 while Beethoven was in Berlin. He would not embark on another such project until 1807 when he composed the Sonata in A (Op. 69). Eight years later he would return to the idiom to write the two last Sonatas (Op. 102). This is a Great Performers Edition edited by cellist Janos Starker.

Hungarian Rondo was composed by Zoltán Kodály in December 1917, drawing on material from the incidental music he had written for Zsigmond Móriczs play Pacsirtaszó (Skylarking). The rondo form is shaped out of four new-style Hungarian folk songs and an instrumental dance melody. Kodály prepared the piece in two somewhat different versions, one for two clarinets, two bassoons and string orchestra, and the other for cello and piano. The orchestral version received its first performance in Vienna on 12 January 1918 at a 'historical concert' organized by the War Ministry of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The cello version was premi?red by Miklós Zsámboky and Ottó Herz at the Budapest Academy of Music on 4 November 1927. Neither version appeared in print in the composers lifetime. The version for string orchestra was edited in 1976 by Ferenc Farkas and István Máriássy (and is distributed as a hire material under the order number K-1). The cello version appears here in print for the first time. The publication is based on the composers surviving manuscript and a contemporary manuscript copy of this. Le Voyageur sans bagage [The Traveller Without Luggage] which had been premiered in 1937 with music by Darius Milhaud was reprised on 1 April 1944 at the Théâtre de la Michodière; Francis Poulenc was asked to compose new stage music. The entire unpublished score lay undiscovered until Bérengère del’Épine a librarian at the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris announced the existence of a manuscript in the Association de la Régie Théâtrale collection. Poulenc finalised the score between 19 and 21 March 1944. It contains nine songs all written for a small instrumental ensemble including Oboe Clarinet Cello and Piano. However at the end of the manuscript the composer echoes the second song – Lent [Slow] – and creates another version for Cello and Piano; curiously the original version of the song has not been erased in the manuscript. Poulenc seems to suggest that we consider the piece for Cello and Piano that we have published here as a different piece of music. It was premiered on Wednesday 23 January 2013 by Marc Coppey accompanied by Jean-François Heisser in the organ auditorium of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) during the symposium for the fiftieth anniversary of Poulenc’s death. Given in a dramatic context some elements allow us to get an idea of the character of the piece which Benoît Seringe Poulenc’s beneficiary judiciously chose to name Souvenirs.
