The Carol Singer's Carol is a song featured in The Manchester Carols a modernisation of the Christmas story with words by the Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and music by Sasha Johnson Manning. The Manchester Carols is an inspired collaboration between composer Sasha Johnson Manning and Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. A collection of 12 carols linked with a gentle entertaining narration which reshape and modernise the Christmas story. Its creators wanted to write something that is relevant to and reflects modern society and which acknowledges the fact that even though someone might not subscribe to the religion behind the Nativity story they can still appreciate it as an inspiring magical tale. The carols are for everyone believers or not. Duffy uses the Christmas story as a metaphor for human experience giving usup-close and personal insights into the central characters of the nativity – Mary Joseph a newborn baby and a ‘golden youth’ (aka the Angel Gabriel). As Duffy herself says: 'I think the story is wonderful. There’s a lot we can take from it on a human level even if we don’t take the divine element.' There are hints too of the darker grittier side of the Nativity story – refugees poverty giving birth on the road; and looking further forward there are hints of Jesus’ fate on the cross. These carols were written in Manchester in 2007 and first performed by children from several Manchester schools at The Royal Northern College of Music (and again in 2008). All of us who worked on them – librettist composer artist conductor teachers musicians and singers – live and work in that great city. And so these are and will forever be  The Manchester Carols'.

Noël! 3 is an exciting collection of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany music for mixed-voice choirs, from the easy to learn to the more challenging and unconventional. The contents range from the Baroque to the present: familiar settings of traditional and lesser-known carols through the ages to Howells, Berkeley and Warlock, and works by today's composers including Richard Rodney Bennett, Paul Mealor, John Tavener, Francis Pott and Richard Allain. Anna R. Matthews writes: 'Frederick Niven's poem tells the story of Christmas in 1914. On Christmas Day a truce was spontaneously enacted by the two sides fighting in Flanders in World War One. This was five months into the war which until this point many in Britain had confidently believed would be over by that time. When the two sides lay down their weapons in the name of humanity and met in the middle of no-man's-land they would not have realised the bloodshed that was to come as the war dragged on for a further four years - a conflict so atrocious that it came to be known as 'the war to end all wars'.This carol conveys the unknowing innocence of thosemen and the joy of Christmas yet explores the sinister context in which they met and the future which was to come. Ultimately the events of the 1914 Christmas truce came to symbolise the universality of hope and peace at Christmas. This carol brings this message into the twenty-first century.' Anna R. Matthews is a composer living in Exeter England. Born in Devon Anna studied music at Durham University where she was awarded the Rosalind Dickinson Prize. She enjoys working with some of today's most talented and creative ensembles: from Psappha to EXAUDI and from cathedral choirs to youth ensembles. Her music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and she has been a featured new music composer in Choir & Organ magazine. Anna was a finalist in the 2011 King James Bible Composition Awards and is a 2013/24 Arts Council England fellow on the Clore Leadership Programme. She is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Written for the annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Westminster Cathedral in December 2015 L’Estrange has delivered another enjoyable but challenging addition to the Christmas carol repertoire. Inspired by the early 17th-century English composer Orlando Gibbons and setting a text from the satirist George Wither of the same era this rousing carol is an ideal finale for a school church or cathedral Christmas concert. A Christmas Carol-This carol was commissioned by the John Lewis Partnership Music Society and first performed at their annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Westminster Cathedral in December 2014 conducted by Manvinder Rattan. A melancholic mood pervades throughout the setting which is melodically rich with subtle chromatic alterations colouring Paul Williamsons beautifully poetic text that evokes the genealogy of Christ springing like a tree from the root of Jesse King Davids father. Long legato lines are an integral part of this carol emphasising the peaks and troughs of harmonic change and the dynamics

A jolly Christmas carol-This lively carol was commissioned in 2005 by Lichfield Cathedral Special Choir (now called the Cathedral Chorus) to celebrate the birth of Hannah Scriven and Holly Mason the daughters of the two cathedral organists at that time. The words were specially written by Tony Barnard the then Canon Chancellor at Lichfield and a member of the choir. This carol whilst not entirely foreign to my normal style touches more ‘country and western’/popular buttons than I am in the habit of touching. But I wanted to write a tuneful piece which swayed and danced and reflected the colourful imagery of Tony Barnard’s text. This child of God is called to save mankind to open eye and ear the heart and mind; to heal and make the lame man leap and play along the road that leads to Easter Day. Lo! Christ The Lord Is Born is actually the second coming of this carol. Elgar and his wife sent the work out as a part-song Grete Malverne on a Rock in 1897 as their Christmas card. The poet Shapcott Wensley librettist of The Banner of St George set his words to the tune and it was published as this carol in 1909.
