This second book of solos is a direct continuation of the first. It takes students to a point where they can begin to tackle the standard sonata and concerto repertoire. The book is designed to cover many of the technical problems encountered by the intermediate horn player and later pieces introduce important techniques such as hand-stopping and the bass clef. As with book one, many pieces are originally associated with the horn and notes at the back of the book give background information and tips for interpretation. French composer, Henri Büsser entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1889. He won the 1893 Prix de Rome and led a highly successful career as a composer, conductor, teacher and organist. His compositions for a variety of instruments are exceptional, Piece In D for French Horn and Piano being no exception. As reflected in Piece In D, Büsser's compositional style was sophisticated, yet true to the 19th century French tradition. Elements of the work include include, chromaticism, use of a wide tessitura, complex rhythms, scalic passages and wide intervals. For all advanced Horn players, Büsser's Piece In D is essential to a varied repertoire.

Urtext. Par SCHUMANN CLARA. Schumann's horn sonatas were composed in 1936/37. Considering the slim repertoire offered horn players from this period, it is more than surprising that these two masterpieces could have slumbered for so long. Both sonatas are similar in structure, with op. 118 being one Schumann's few three-movement sonatas. The first movements of the pieces sparkle with melancholically lyrical melodies, whereas passages strongly marked rhythmically, variously shape the two outer movements. Virtuoso moments can be found, respectively, in the final movements, bringing the works to a brilliant close. The horn parts predominantly range within the full, sonorous middle register, where occasional 'outbursts” up to the notated a flat'' are also not lacking. The clever handling of the balance of sounds, the possibilities on the early valve horn as well as the inner interweaving of themes differentiating horn and piano make the sonatas an exceedingly vivid testimony to Schumann's mature compositional art.
