Cloud breathing is a technique in Chinese martial arts involving short, sharp inhaling breaths and a slow exhale to oxygenate the body in preparation for fighting, meditation and healing. In this work, the piano begins in the upper register with tones like wind chimes, with the oboe entering beneath. This meditative first section leads to sudden shifts in harmony under a quiet oboe melody. Activity increases, leading to an oboe cadenza and a fast section based on rapid repeated notes in the oboe with the piano accompanying with contrapuntal lines. A brief piano solo leads to fragments of melody from the slow opening, now transformed. After a fortissimo climax, the quiet wind chime opening suddenly returns. Giovanni Boni is a little known Italian composer from – presumably – the first half of the 18th century. Multiple records of composers with identical or similar names from that period can be found whocould indeed have been one and the same person and the Giovanni Boni at hand could have been any or none of them! Evelyn Rothwell edited and arranged four pieces from the Walsh edition of the “Solos for a GermanFlute Hoboy or Violin compos’d by Sigr. Giovanni Boni” into the Oboe Sonata In G for Oboe with Piano accompaniment.This hidden gem of Italian Baroque music should not be dismissed as the charmingly melodic sonata is a particular delight for musicians and audiences alike. The four movements (Preludio – Largo Allegro Alla Siciliana Allegro) can be played separatelyor together their total performance time is approximately 8:30 minutes.Boni’s Sonata In G is well within the capabilities of the average student or amateur Oboe player and aunique addition to the solo player’s repertoire!

Op. 39 No. 16-Thaikovsky's 'The Children's Album' was a delightful set of 24 pieces written for young players. Thomas Johnson has selected six of these pieces and skilfully arranged them for oboe and piano to bring out the beauty of Thaikovsky's melodic lines. An easy piano accompaniment makes them accessible to most players.

First published in 1969 this tranquil and slow piece with it's gently undulating melody and soft chordal accompaniment is ideal for the repertoire of any Oboe player of grade four and above. The solo line is also suitable forperformance on the Oboe Clarinet Horn and Cello.

French composer Robert Planel (1908-1994) was the son of composer and founder of the Music School of Montelimar Alphonse Planel. Planel junior was an exceptionally accomplished musician reflected in his composition Chanson Romantique for Oboe and Piano. Published in 1954  Chanson Romantique is a sublime legato piece for intermediate level oboists. The piece reflects its title through use of an expressive melody slow tempo variations in rhythm use of the lower register and a contrasting 6/8 section. Planel's Chanson Romantique is an excitingaddition to the repertoire of the Oboe and cannot be missed by aspiring oboists.

Japanese born Makoto Shinohara was born in 1931. He studied at the Tokyo University of Arts before moving to the Paris Conservatoire. His passion is for electronic music, but his catalogue is varied and includes the sublime Obsession for Oboe and Piano. Composed in 1960, Shinohara had just completed his studies at the Paris Conservatoire under Olivier Messiaen and other experimental composers. Obsession exploits the Oboe and Piano through riveting uses of tonality, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, articulation and shared melody. For all advanced oboists seeking to include a challenging yet excitingly unique contemporary work in their repertoire, Shinohara's Obsession suitably fits the bill!
