Originally written as a concerto for two violins this impressive final movement is string ensemble writing that will give developing groups confidence yet create a very musical performance with its carefully marked dynamics and section contrasts. This is Baroque style teaching material at its very best.

This is the full score for Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 4 The Inextinguishable the composer's most popular and most frequently recorded and performed work. Although Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 4 was completed in 1916 and although it prominently features a thundering duel between timpani the composer did not write this work in response to World War I. Instead it is a noisy energetic thrusting paean to the inextinguishability of life itself. And as music like life in this instance is inextinguishable the four intricately interlinked movements are played without a break. In this work can be heardthe influences of Brahms Dvorak Sibelius and others all transformed by Nielsen's creative spirit. The symphony ends in grand Romantic style with a triumphant finale wherein the jagged two-note and three-note themes of the beginning are conquered by the songlike theme of the third movement. Parts are for hire: hire@ewh.dk Programme NoteWind-Drumming was written in 1979 on a commission from The Danish Percussion Ensemble.The piece is a clash of two kinds of sound-associations; the mystic exotic impact of Latin-American drumming and the more well dressed reputation of Western concert-instruments in this case a wind-quintet (w. electric flute).The two instrumental camps either melt into one soft humming ritual or are split wide apart the winds tearing their way through the undergrowth ofrainforest-drumming. There is more than one way of getting on to WIND-DRUMMING: obviously it is about the confrontation of two incongruent ways of living a lament on the damage done to the tropical rainforests of the world by modern civilisation. One can hear it plainly as a direct rhythm-show a downright number or a joyous homage to the most exiting kind of folkloristic music at all: the carnal spell of the Brazilian Samba. Poul Ruders
