Tchaikovsky composed Souvenir d'un lieu cher Op. 42 in 1878 for Violin and Piano. Melodie is the third of three movements of this lovely work. Later, in 1884 the movements were published separately and eventually Glazunov arranged the three movements for Violin and orchestra.The music is poetic, expressive, joyous and refreshing with a wink or two. Ralph Sauer has arranged two lovely and contrasting short works by Germaine Tailleferre for Trombone and Piano. Tailleferre was the only female member of the famous French Les Six.1. Berceuse, originally for Violin and Piano lilts and floats in a calm and lyrical stream of dreamy phrases. 2. Pastorale originally for solo Piano is a playful movement in mixed meter alternating between legato and articulated phrases.Together they are total about 5 minutes in length and are appropriate for advanced performers.

Liszt composed the Romance oubliee around 1844 for Piano. It was forgotten until he heard Violist Hermann Ritter at the first performance of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen at Bayreuth. He fashioned for Ritter a transcription of the work for Viola and Piano as well as ones for the Piano, Violin and Violoncello.In this short work, the listener hears the agonies of a troubled soul, beginning with a rhapsodic passage, continuing with a cadenza-like section, then a section with arpeggiated figures, finally settling into a peaceful ending.This 4 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. With Mr. Sauer's arrangement we now have this lovely version for Trombone and Piano.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Gypsy Song and Dance, arranged beautifully by Mr. Sauer for Trombone and Piano is taken from his four-movement Gypsy Suite Opus 20, originally published in 1898 for Violin and Piano, a very prolific year for the composer. Eventually this work and others were orchestrated by a colleague.
The two movements of nine minutes in length are suitable for advanced performers.

Gounod's Three Romances Without Words arranged by Ralph Sauer are taken from a group of five similarly named Romances Without Words originally composed for Piano solo between 1861 and 1866. Paul Marie Theodore Vincent d'Indy was born in Paris into an aristocratic family of royalist and Catholic persuasion. He had piano lessons from an early age from his paternal grandmother, who passed him on to Antoine Francois Marmontel and Louis Diemer. His main influence was Cesar Franck.

Lalo was born in Lille (Nord), in northernmost France. He attended that city's music conservatory in his youth. Then, beginning at age 16, Lalo studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Berlioz's old enemy Francois Antoine Habeneck. For several years, he worked as a string player and teacher in Paris. In 1848, he joined with friends to found the Armingaud Quartet, playing viola and second violin. Lalo's earliest surviving compositions are songs and chamber works. He dedicated most of his career to the composition of chamber music, which was in vogue, and to writing works for orchestra. These two works beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauder show the core of Lalo's chamber music; personal, subtle at times and filled with a French lyricism. For advanced performers.

Not many works for strings translate well to brass, but this baroque Violin Sonata by Arcangelo Corelli is the exception.
