As the saxophone is commonly associated with the jazz style, classical music for the instrument had always been lacking and so when Paul Bonneau published his Concerto for Alto Saxophone in 1944, it was well-received by performers of the genre. Bonneau's composition was highly versatile, ranging from over fifty film scores, operettas, songs and other pieces for Saxophone, including this concerto. Comprising three movements, a typical performance lasts about fifteen minutes. Bonneau's Concerto for Alto Saxophone contains typically French characteristics, including chromaticism and difficult technical passages. All these elements combined make for an enjoyable and challenging piece for saxophonists.

This version of Concertino by Eugene Bozza is the version for alto saxophone and piano dedicated to Marcel Mule. Written in two parts, I. Fantasque et leger and II. Andantino, this work lasts 17 minutes and is very difficult to execute as a strong endurance and really good skills and technique are required. Very interesting in term of melody and sonority, this piece definitely shows the full saxophone range at its best and is perfect for contests and recitals. Eugene Bozza won different prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prizes for the Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He composed several operas, chamber works and ballets among others.

French composer, Robert Planel (1908-1994) was the son of composer and founder of the Music School of Montelimar, Alphonse Planel. Planel junior was an exceptionally accomplished musician, which is reflected in his composition, Romantic Suite for alto saxophone and piano. The sixth movement of Romantic Suite, Song of the Muleteer is a charming piece for intermediate level saxophonists. With a typical performance lasting about three and a half minutes, Planel's Song of the Muleteer addresses a wide range, dotted rhythms, articulation, dynamics, tempo changes, key changes and variety in performance directions. Tom's Turn by Sally Beamish is a 3-minute work for alto saxophone. Initially written for saxophone it was then first published for solo clarinet because of it's wide range. Through the initiative of saxophonist Rob Buckland it has been arranged for saxophone in 2020 and now exists in the version first intended.

With his piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition from 1874, Mussorgsky created a classic example of programme music. Based on the paintings of his deceased friend Viktor Hartmann, he also composed the lyrical serenade 'Il vecchio castello' (The Old Castle), among others. Hartmann's picture shows a medieval Italian castle with a singing troubadour who accompanies himself on the lute. In Maurice Ravel's subsequent famous orchestral version, the beautiful, melancholy melody was played by the alto saxophone. Accompaniment, prelude and interludes are reminiscent of playing a medieval hurdy-gurdy with its pervading drone bass. Therein lies the continuity of the piece, thereabove lies the quiet romance with its melancholy character - the unrequited love of the troubadour. This separate edition now gives all saxophonists the opportunity to play the piece with piano accompaniment.
