People Get Ready: The Piano Collection

(+)
This ground-breaking and unmissable piano collection celebrates the music of iconic black songwriters. Including acclaimed songs such as People Get Ready (Curtis Mayfield), A Change is Gonna Come (Sam Cooke), Blinded By Your Grace Part 1 (Stormzy), I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free (Nina Simone), Redemption Song (Bob Marley), and more. All of the pieces are idiomatically arranged for intermediate-level piano solo (approximately Grade 3-5). The nature, style and genre of the songs vary widely, but the aim is to introduce players to a range of musicians and works that may well be new to them but are nevertheless important classics. The song People Get Ready was written during a time of civil unrest in America. Curtis Mayfield was increasingly infusing his songs with social commentary and it was written to give a message of hope, that change is on the way and there will be better times ahead./ Recueil / Piano

(+)
June Armstrong's songbook The Girona Suite - Eight Evocations For Piano features eight original and challenging compositions for grades five to seven standard, all inspired by the shipwreck of the Spanish galleas, the Girona. The pieces included in this songbook were all composed specifically for this collection by revered pianist and teacher June Armstrong. Her many years of experience in teaching have allowed her to craft compositions both subtle and powerful that stretch the ability of students while giving them an engaging story on which to base their expression and feeling when playing. Armstrong is an advocate of focusing learning on atmosphere and tonal awareness, which, when combined with the necessary techniques and theory, makes this songbook a learning tool that is theoretically sound and musically enticing. From the first page, the composer has shown her commitment to creating pieces specifically for students learning the Piano, as she writes of how many people, including former students, have inspired her. She then writes in detail about the historical context of the theme of the work, before giving more practical advice on the music itself and how to go about playing it. The friendly and warm approach that Armstrong brings to presenting her suite makes it more than a simple songbook, it becomes a personal journey, where the composer herself guides you through the characters and settings that the music has been composed to evoke. As well as presenting challenging and entertaining pieces, Armstrong's work serves as a fantastic introduction into how major and minor keys can be manipulated to different ends, and how motifs can be used together with a theme. Armstrong writes:?The final piece, Sarabande for the Lost Souls returns to the desolation of Eb minor, closing with a final statement of the No Tengo theme.?The songs in The Girona Suite are designed to cultivate a student's ability to play in keys containing more than three flats or sharps, as well as a number of different time signatures and with varying degrees of expression. This songbook would be ideal for a student of any age who is unafraid to experiment with evoking feeling and emotion in their playing, while also learning and practicing numerous techniques in an appealing and informative context. If you would like to listen to any of the songs that are listed below, these can be heard free of charge on the composer's website. / Piano

Par VAN NUETEN GUY. Contact by Guy Van Nueten originated from the feeling of being abandoned, such as a person who treks through a barren desert following a great disaster and asks himself if there's any point in carrying on when every day brings just more of the same - still more desert. I suspect that each of us has such a desert within himself, but that it depends on circumstances whether or not we choose to make the journey through it. Contact lays out a path that we can share. This music seems especially romantic to me, in the sense that the sounds have much to say about loneliness. There are moments where this album emphasises its own seriousness, then immediately afterwards invites us todance. Contact sticks out a hand, sometimes two, mostly to show the internal process of the composer - firstly the lack of fire and the abandoned longing for this, followed by the bewilderment that there is something that is still smouldering and that can be fanned into a blazing forest fire to burn away all the pain of desolation. For this reason it is also moving music - because it wants the recognition of the listener, wants us to feel our own desolation while the piano explores further depths and heights. At times a composition is almost carelessly abandoned and another one begun. Whoever looks closely at feelings and is honest with himself and the world is always a little cruel. But finally there is an end to that desert - he sees an oasis and also a beautiful hotel. Upon entering, he sees no-one, not even at the desk, but the reigning play of light and colour is of an otherworldly power. Maybe no other people are needed here and the beauty that prevails is enough. Then sounds of music arise and some people move across to the immense hall where a wing has been set up, behind which a man is sitting, his fingers moving across the keyboard. And only one thing is real: after desolation comes comfort. That person is you and that person is me. And that music is called Contact, directly from the soul of Van Nueten. (+)
Toy Box - Very First Pieces For Piano contains 26 simple yet impressive Piano songs composed by experienced teacher June Armstrong. This book is ideal for a beginner to put theory into practice with a wide variety of pieces in a number of styles. Each title in this songbook is evocative of the way the piece is meant to be played, with songs like Ballerina, Hula Hoop and Kaleidoscope suiting the instructions that Armstrong has provided like ?Daintily? and ?Steadily?. Unique touches like this make Toy Box perfect for a young child who is working their way towards grade one standard, as the composer has skilfully attempted to represent the nature of various toys through the medium of music. This will help a young musician to learn the basic concepts of musical theory in a fun and familiar context, with songs like Jumbo and Slinky sure to entertain all who are within earshot through humour and musicality. If you would like to listen to audio recordings of all the songs included in Toy Box, they are all available to download free of charge from the author's website. What sets this songbook apart from other beginner books is the personality and dedication that June Armstrong brings to her compositions, noting that her pieces are all inspired by her own Piano students and giving detailed and informative notes for each song at the beginning of the book. For the song Dinosaur, Armstrong writes that ?You will want to create a very scary atmosphere? The right hand note heads are strange bird calls in the forest. The left hand Ds, Es and Fs are the dinosaur??. The care that has been put into creating this sheet music shows that Armstrong is acutely aware of the best way for students to learn, and that she truly wants students to learn effectively, but in a fun and light-hearted way. Each song in Toy Box occupies a single page making it easy for a player to track their progress and learning, while there are additional helpful bits of information peppered throughout to clarify anything that may be unfamiliar to the student. Armstrong is keen on developing a student's ear for tone and atmosphere, so these extra notes not only reinforce how to play the piece physically, but also how to include emotion and feeling in music, for example how to conjure imagery like that of Blowing Bubbles. The songbook will be perfect for a child who already understands basic musical terms, will be able to play in a few keys other than C Major and is able to play in simple time signatures. As a first step into new compositions, Toy Box will introduce new concepts as well as reinforce what a student is already accustomed to, nevertheless, Armstrong's message is clear - ?Have fun!?. / Piano

(+)
The Nine Glens Of Antrim - Nine Easy Pieces For Piano is a songbook featuring nine distinctly Irish-themed original compositions by renowned composer and teacher June Armstrong for grades two to four standard, designed to teach and reinforce technique and stylistic interpretation.Composer June Armstrong has taken the glens of County Antrim in Ireland as the inspiration for nine new Piano pieces that attempt to capture the atmosphere of the varied landscape. From the astonishing monuments of caves and valleys to calmer, more tranquil waterfalls and rivers, Armstrong has successfully composed pieces to help a student imagine and evoke the natural beauty of a landscape through the musical medium. The concept that Armstrong has tried to incorporate is that the expressiveness of the Piano as an instrument is something that students should be familiar with, and so this book will teach you how to create atmosphere while using the musical theory you are familiar with. One of the most impressive things about The Nine Glens Of Antrim is the hard work that the composer has put into creating these pieces as well as incorporating Irish music and the Irish landscape. At the beginning of the songbook Armstrong goes into great detail about what each piece symbolises, as well as a small amount of Irish history and legend. She intertwines this with detailed playing instructions, making learning entertaining and informative as well as inspiring. In the notes for the piece titled ?Layd Church?, the student is told that?A small stream runs along the side of the church, the sound of which, together with birdsong, is the only music you will hear there now. If you wish to play this successfully, you will need to listen to birds singing!?It is this personality and friendly tone that makes learning from The Nine Glens Of Antrim a joy.The songs themselves are subtle, pretty and precisely composed, perfect for a student who already has a good grasp of playing in a variety of keys, at different tempos and in alternative time signatures. Armstrong also leaves certain expressive elements up to the performer, so the flexibility would suit a student who is keen to bring some character and feeling to the piece. Each song represents a different challenge, and attempts to introduce a novel style and technique, so the use of the natural beauty of a landscape provides an anchor for students to connect the theory with the practice. To hear a recording of each track free of charge, just head to the composer's own website, where you can also view photographs symbolising each song to inspire you to begin your learning of The Nine Glens of Antrim today. / Piano

(+)
Jazz Hands is a series of original jazz pieces for Piano by Mark Tanner which covers all standards from grade one through to red hot. Although the player may feel free to indulge in a spot of improvisation in response to the printed music there is no expectation to do so in any of the books. Nor are there any chord symbols or other bespoke abbreviations the like of which presuppose a degree of familiarity with the genre which may not actually be the case. Rather the idea is that the player will become gradually more confident and adept at playing in a jazz style as he/she works through the books. It may well be that a classically-trainedpianist has reached say grade 5 but feels currently at a more modest stage when tackling jazz. This is absolutely not a problem and indeed is all the more reason for the 'straight' player to extend their jazz skills to match. The title of this series 'Jazz Hands' derives from the familiar exuberant gesturing seen in music theatre fingers spread and extended with palms facing upwards an effect frequently amplified by a convulsive shivering of the hands. Cheerleaders have tended to make widespread use of jazz hands while the concept has also found its way into revues Broadway shows and films as well as contemporary dance. In the current context I am of course referring to the jazz pianist's hands which in only the most ambitiously spaced Art Tatum chord would require the player to stretch the digits to such an extent as in the aforementioned theatrical sense. The term 'jazz' has been adopted and adapted in a multiplicity of ways (not unlike 'classical' indeed) so that it no longer tells us very much about the music itself. Aficionados immediately recognise the better-known subgenres such as 'bebop' or 'New Orleans' styles and may even be able to distinguish 'smooth' from 'groove' or 'fusion/crossover' from 'postmodern'. And yet these are just labels not music. In an understandable bid to define all that we hear

Early Elementary Level-Description: Purpose: I wanted young students to work on playing a smooth lyrical piece and thus improve their musicianship. Suggestions for Instruction: Practice the left-hand harmonic intervals (p.2) without the melody line naming each interval. Next try the left- and right-hand harmonic intervals on page 4. Practice the white-key arpeggios on page 3. Have the student try them without pedal at first to work on legato playing. Then add the pedal being sure to change it smoothly where indicated. After the white key arpeggios in Peaceful River are mastered the student may try all white key arpeggios ascending and descending. Discuss the dynamics on page 3. Notice thatduring the ascending arpeggio there is a crescendo and as the arpeggio descends there is a diminuendo. It is especially important that the student be taught musical sensitivity while playing this piece. Discuss the title of the piece and how the music fits the title. Ask the students questions like: How would you feel if you were sitting by a peaceful river? What would you do while sitting there? Key: C Major

Barbara Arens writes... A fact: I love Scotland. Every time I come home after travelling in Scotland I feel myself bursting with ideas inspired by all I've seen and experienced there. The heather-covered hills and the dusky forests the wind the amazingly pure air the mysterious ruins - and especially the water - be it a dark brown burn a roaring waterfall heavy clouds a gentle mist or the waves of the North Sea or a loch just begging to be explored - and the people I meet and their lovely almost always comprehensible speech...What a source of inspiration! And then there's the music - nothing is more thrilling than hearing massed bands of pipes and drums aswell as the rich tradition of folk music. So I come home and sit down at the piano and try to put these impressions into music trying always to keep the pieces as easily playable as possible - I want my piano students to enjoy them and express themselves through them without struggling with technical difficulties. So some of these pieces reflect my impression of a landscape standing stones a sunset over a loch; but some of the pieces are based on actual traditional gaelic songs and tunes. A wonderful discovery was finding the Scots Musical Museum the collection of traditional songs assembled and revised to a great extent by Robert Burns which appeared in Edinburgh 1769 1803 - a fantastic resource.I'm hoping you'll enjoy playing this collection of Scottish Piano pieces.
