This piece was originally written as the final 'prank' movement of a concerto for trombone and orchestra. By popular request the piece has been given a separate piano part and has since been proved equally entertaining for trombone bassoon or cello! Arvo Pärts Spiegel im Spiegel illustrates his creative principles: above a permanent flow of chords on the piano, the cello unfolds acantilena in long note values, which grows out of succinct steps. This cantilena spins out sweeping, chorale-like arches and spreads itself out more and more.
