Dans ses arrangements Philip Sparke a gardé cela à l?esprit et chaque prélude peut être interprété avec une instrumentation minimale lors d?évènements où un petit ensemble est nécessaire. Les Trois Mousquetaires-Les Trois Mousquetaires est une commande de la société Miraphone pour le Miraphone Tuba Quartett et la Musique des Gardiens de la Paix qui en assurèrent la création à Guebwiller (France) le 28 juin 2003. / Même si l?on n?a jamais lu une seule ligne du roman mythique d?Alexandre Dumas Les Trois Mousquetaires (1844) on connaît nécessairement le quatuor parfait (avec sa célèbre devise « Tous pour un un pour tous ») que forment D?Artagnan Athos Porthos et Aramis. Aussi ne compte-t-on plus les nombreuses adaptations du roman ni les nombreux historiens qui s?intéressent au très réel Charles de Batz de Castelmore d?Artagnan mort au siège de Maastricht en 1673. Letissu musical des Trois Mousquetaires (The Three Musketeers) s?intéresse davantage aux éléments de la personnalité d?un personnage qu?au rôle qu?il joue dans l?intrigue. La trame est vivante on y vit intensément. Maxime Aulio a orienté son choix sur D?Artagnan le parfait gentilhomme sensible et romantique qui se laisse facilement séduire par les femmes à l'image de la douce Constance Bonacieux dont il s'éprend et de la perfide Milady de Winter dont la beauté l?envoûte. Le premier mouvement - D?Artagnan - est fidèle au caractère du jeune noble provincial venu de Gascogne : enthousiaste et héroïque en toutes circonstances. Le second mouvement - Constance Bonacieux - est galant prévenant et passionné. Le troisième et dernier tableau est quant à lui aussi ensorceleur et sournois que la femme fatale qu?il dépeint Milady de Winter.

The Balkans region has always been a source of musical inspiration for composers throughout the centuries. Strong rhythms and often-abundant musical climaxes are two important characteristics of this rich and varied musical style.Etienne Crausaz took some of these elements and mixed it with elements of rock turning this Balkan Dance into an exuberant and spectacular piece of music during which no one can remain seated!

This substantial work by Jan de Haan explores the many tonal qualities of the brass band. Following a quiet opening theme based on Phrygian tonality the band bursts into life with a massive climax. Following a jolly second theme characterised by large interval jumps peace and quiet is again restored. Both themes are developed with many poignant solo figures until we reach a resounding fortissimo climax with the solo cornet performing the first theme from the back of the auditorium. A spectacular concert work containing all the elements that bring out the best in brass band sound.

Simon Dobson wrote his 'Four Sketches' at the request of Peter Bossano Head of Brass at the Royal College of Music in recognition of the 25th anniversary of Benjamin Britten’s death. The first movement 'Fanfare' quotes directly from the opening violin melody from Britten’s song cycle Les Illuminations. This melodic line is superimposed upon sonorous Lydian mode chords to project a majestic sound. The second movement 'Prayer' is a definite contrast being and much more reflective and pensive in it’s mood and featuring a dream like euphonium cadenza. The third movement 'Funeral March' builds from a soft chordal opening to a chaotic and confusedfortississimo climax with flourishes in the cornets and pounding tri-tones across the basses before plunging into silence for a flugel cadenza to finish. The final Finale movement is much more positive from the off with its jaunty melodies over a Brittenesque ostinato. The block chordal passages offer a crashing climax making for an exciting conclusion to an excellent new work for the medium. Simon Dobson’s 'Four Sketches' was the winning entry in the European Brass Band Composer Competition held in Brussels in March 2002.
