Peter Maxwell Davies' 1990 work for unaccompanied SATB choir, written for the BBC singers. Words by George Mackay Brown. 'Written for the BBC Singers, this piece requires a high level of choral expertise in its rhythms, intricate textures (though nearly always in four parts), wide-ranging vocal lines and characteristically dark but luminous harmony, impregnated with tritones and seconds. Not for the first time, Davies and George Mackay Brow follow the Stations of the Cross, though the fourteen sections are joined into a continuous slow-fast-slow musical movement, and the references to the events of Holy Week are oblique. Vocal score with piano accompaniment for rehearsal purposes.

Appointed Master of the Queen's Music in 2004, Max, as he is fondly known, has now written four Christmas Carols for Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. At just under four minutes in length this traditional-style carol uses the words of long standing friend George Mackay Brown's poem 'Hamnavoe Women and the Warbeth Bell'. It’s not the first time Max has chosen to use texts by the poet who, like Max, lived on the Orkney Islands.

Max wrote this tiny piece for the small chorus of his St Magnus Festival, with a plain string accompaniment. It works absolutely beautifully and its text (in Latin) reminds us that sometimes we should just enjoy music with a simple heart: 'Wealth may be yours, wisdom too, and you may have beauty, but if pride touch them, all will turn to dross.'.

Spanish. Text Source: Filipenses / Philippians 2:6-11, La Biblia Latinoamérica Scripture: Philippians 2:6–11.
Commissioned by the American Federation Pueri Cantores to showcase diversity within the Spanish-language choral repertoire, this advanced choral piece written for SATB voices and piano accompaniment is a setting of Philippians chapter 2, in which Saint Paul exalts Christ as the “name above all names†for having taken on human form to die on the cross. The piece is in three sections, mirroring the three-part form of the scripture passage: a gentle, stoic homophonic opening in C major, a polyphonic, somber middle section in A minor at the words “even death on a cross,†and an exuberant section in A major climaxing in the final statement that “Christ Jesus is the Lord!†For choirs looking for a musical challenge and an opportunity to showcase the choral arts using scriptural texts in Spanish, this masterful work makes for a tremendous concert piece, prelude or liturgical anthem. Matsushita has conceived his setting of the Pentecost sequence entirely in the Renaissance polychoral tradition. He employs the full choir (within individual choirs divisi passages also occasionally occur) solely for magnificent sounding climaxes at conclusions, prior to these occurrences he repeatedly combines groups of voices or he allows individual choirs to sing, effectively, in alternation. This type of reduction is even carried over to quasi Gregorian passages sung by one voice in unison. The piece is tonal throughout, with occasional diatonic seasoning. The consistently homophonic setting is oriented towards the declamation of the Latin text. Melodically it is in the style of modal, Gregorian structures, without quoting the well-known sequence. A fast, rhythmically syncopated declamatory section introduces, the dramaturgically appropriate climax to the solemn conclusion, which, molto legato, returns once again with large upward swings to the text of the first strophe. Matsushita writes in a comfortable vocal range so that the work can be sung, at the same time, in both a relaxed and grandiose manner. For large choirs, even for oratorio choirs with only limited experience in a cappella singing, this piece is aptly suited for performance and the music is both grateful and brings much joy for singers.

With Carl Friedrich Zelter's motet Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, Hermann Max, editor of the Choral Treasury series, has uncovered a real treasure. The three-verse text of the motet for mixed choir (SATB) and basso continuo was written by Friedrich Gottlob Klopstock who kept close to the Advent song of the same name by Philipp Nicolai. During Zelter's lifetime, the motet enjoyed great popularity. And quite rightly so: For the music teacher and friend of Goethe turned out to be a composer with an extraordinary sense of tone. An introductory choral movement is followed by a captivating bass aria which can be optionally sung by all basses of the choir. The piece culminates in an elaborate virtuoso fugue with an interwoven cantus firmus in the bass. A demanding, yet highly rewarding rarity in church music!
