Messa d'morti. Par DURANTE FRANCESCO. The Requiem in C minor by Francesco Durante (1684–1755) is one of the most important works of this genre written in the first half of the 18th century. In his Messa de’ morti, Durante shows great creativity in combining traditional elements of church music with new ideas originating from instrumental writing and opera. The quality and originality of his Requiem make it an exciting rediscovery with the potential to establish itself as a core repertoire work of sacred choral music. Fassung Ii. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. The St. John Passion ranks alongside the St. Matthew Passion, the Christmas Oratorio, the Magnificat and the B minor Mass as one of the great vocal works from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he substantially revised the general concept of the piece and also changed numerous details. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources and thus present the work in a form which was never heard during Bach’s lifetime. Consequently, the wish often expressed by conductors to perform anauthentic version by Bach could not be easily achieved. The present critical, new edition of the St. John Passion fulfills this wish and for the first time makes available the complete music of the second version of the work as it was performed under Bach’s direction in 1725. Since a number of movements were replaced by others, including the opening chorus, this version differs most dramatically from the “standard” version which is well known today. J. S. Howard Arman, director of the Bavarian Radio Choir, has been actively engaged with international Christmas carols through various Christmas-related CD productions of his choir in the past years. This has resulted in a number of original arrangements for four- to eight-part mixed choir a cappella, shedding new light on well-known classics such as O du fröhliche [O, you joyful], Stille Nacht [Silent Night] and Lasst uns froh und munter sein [Let us be happy and cheerful]. The first volume includes five Christmas carols from the German-speaking regions. They range from simple but harmonically intriguing settings such as Lieb Nachtigall, wach auf [Dear nightingale, wake up] to eight-part sound paintings with bell-like chimes as in O du fröhliche and classical double choir settings such as Resonet in laudibus . The six collections of 'Vierstimmige Motetten und Arien' published by Johann Adam Hiller offer a selection of motets, mostly from the second half of the 18th century. They show us the products of a new age of achievement in which the motet was again able to flourish after this genre had led only a shadowlike existence for more than a century. The editor of those collections, Johann Adam Hiller, was active as a composer of Singspie, editor of various musical periodicals, leader of the Gewandhaus concerts, University Director of Music, musical director of the Neukirche, and finally, from 1789, Thomaskantor in Leipzig. Upon Hiller's assumption of the office of Thomaskantor theolder motets were replaced in Leipzig church services by contemporary compositions. Printed texts which have been preserved show that Hiller's collections were used widely. The present publication fills this need and in preparing the book the editor has been able to choose from a large selection of, in part, previously unpublished pictures which in this collection, as a whole, present a vivid picture of Josef Gabriel Rheinberger in his surroundings and make the course of his development clearly understandable.
