Actus tragicus. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit (Mighty God, His time is ever best) BWV 106 'Actus tragicus' Cantata for a funeral service. Since there are no original sources or documents concerning the first performance of the funeral cantata Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit BWV 106, it is impossible to establish the year of origin of this work, called Actus tragicus by Bach. The striking resemblance to the cantatas BWV 131 Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu Dir (presumably 1707), and BWV 71 Gott ist mein König (1708) – both of which were composed in Mühlhausen – suggests that the funeral cantata was also written in Mühlhausen in1707. Par WHITBOURN JAMES. This glorious collection of beautiful choral music by composer James Whitbourn includes fifteen short works drawn from his oeuvre from the first few years of the 21st century. Many of his greatest compositions are included in The Choral Collection, with many of the pieces working perfectly for seasonal performances, while also reflecting the many fruitful collaborations of Whitbourn's distinguished career. All works are arranged for SATB Choir. James Whitbourn has become renowned throughout the world for his acclaimed compositions and settings of numerous texts. He has been described as truly original and an innovator of contemporary British choral music, collaborating with people like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. The former appears here, as A Prayer Of Desmond Tutu, a setting of one of the Archbishop's prayers. His arrangements and compositions for the King's College Choir have been universally critically acclaimed, with A Great And Mighty Wonder, Nunc Dimittis and Were You There? representing these hugely popular collaborations. Whitbourn has also had a very close relationship with the BBC since his beginnings as a composer, working with them on three pieces within The Choral Collection. Eternal Rest and Give Us The Wings Of Faith were both composed specifically for television broadcast, the former (in its orchestral form) was played for the funeral of the Queen Mother in 2002. His longest work, for which he is most famous, is a setting of text from'the Diary of Anne Frank'. There Is No Speech Or Language comes from this work, taking its text from other sources, but that still maintain the beauty and tragedy of the wider piece. The Choral Collection of fifteen compositions by James Whitbourn is full of beautiful, haunting, uplifting and inspiring melodies for SATB Choir and Organ Accompaniment from one of the most treasured British choral composers. The brilliant choice of texts throughout is matched only by the sheer compositional skill of Whitbourn in evoking the emotions of the words in the musical form. Commissioned by Gareth Malone for Series Four of BBC TV's 'The Choir' and first performed by Malone and the Military Wives' choir as part of The Royal British Legion's Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on 12th November 2011 in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen. A favourite for the 2011 Christmas Number One, with support from radio DJ Chris Evans who has suggested every choir in the country should sing this song, it's and nbsp - the biggest threat to X-Factor chart domination this year. Composer and choir master Clytus Gottwald comments on his transcription of Anton Webern’s Im Sommerwind (1904) as follows: “First of all I had to eliminate all those parts of the source material that had strictly instrumental designs, reducing the work – to quote Wolfgang Rihm – to its singable remnant. What was so surprising, however, was that such a reduction did not lead to a meaningless sequence of fragments, but that the fragments turned out to be – with regard to harmony and motifs – so closely related to each other that the result proved an impressive ‘work within a work’. The reduction uncovered something that could be called the ‘essence’ of the work. In order to make the singable remnant singable, I used fragments from Bruno Wille’s poem Im Sommerwind, which Webern had used as a basis for his composition.”/ Répertoire / Choeur Mixte SATB

' Ave verum was commissioned early in 2011 by Edward Rowntree for the birthday of his father, John Rowntree, director of music at Douai Abbey in the UK. My aim was to write a piece both short and simple, suitable for regular liturgical use. There are, of course, many wonderful settings of this text already, not least those by William Byrd and Edward Elgar, both of which I sang as a boy. In this instance I felt their presence as a fellowship and, having their music in my head while writing, I was encouraged rather than daunted. In fact, if you listen with this in mind, you may hear a phrase or two in homage to the great masters.' - John Duggan An inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers, the Novello New Choral Series offers pieces for all types of choirs, including sacred and secular works from simple, four-part settings to more expansive, yet accessible, repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. Born in 1963, John Duggan was a chorister at Westminster Cathedral and studied music at Oxford. While still a boy, he dreamed of writing in the great European choral tradition of Victoria, Tallis and Palestrina. His vocal music has delighted both singers and audiences across Europe and the United States, and he composes regularly for film and dance. He has composed for a number of choirs including Commotio, Westminster Cathedral Choir, the Hildegard Choir and Sospiri, and has written commissions for the Edington Music Festival, Crossover Intergenerational Dance Group, Oxford Youth Dance and The Oxford-Grenoble Association. John regularly performs as a singer and choral director and works as a recording engineer and producer. He has recently been appointed as a Creative Arts Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford. / Choeur SATB

Threshold of Night (a setting one of Kathleen Raine's Three Poems of Incarnation) was commissioned by St John's College, Cambridge and was premièred under the direction of David Hill in the College chapel on 25th November 2006. Written for Advent, the work aims to highlight the yearning that all societies have, in their time of need, for guidance from beyond their community. By coincidence, however, this composition was completed on the eve of 29th August 2006, one year after Hurricane Katrina, one of the deadliest in the history of the United States, made landfall in Louisiana. Looking at Raine's words in this context ('Go back, my child, to the rain and storm', 'I will not go back for sorrow or pain'), the poem can be seen to echo the conflicted and anguished thoughts of displaced New Orleanians. The original Advent sense ofdesired guidance takes on a specific, if unintentional, significance with regards to the tragic outcome of that hurricane - this is emphasized by the bluesinflectedharmonies found throughout Threshold of Night . / SATB

Imaginez un cortège coloré de créatures et de personnages tout droit sortis des mythes ancestraux et légendes incroyables : magiciens et sorcières, bouffons et jongleurs, ménestrels et troubadours, échassiers et monocyclistes, lutins et gargouilles, gnomes bruyants et farfadets riants, dragons géants et fées volantes, carrosses rutilants tirés par des licornes caracolantes, tous se dirigent vers le château de Merlin l'Enchanteur.La musique est à l'image du scénario imaginé par le compositeur : originale et lumineuse pour mieux nous livrer les secrets des couleurs médiévales. Valet je vous donnerai - Vous méchant, faux monde ... Après poème spirituel de Valerius Herberger et basé sur la mélodie du choral par Melchior Teschner le compositeur français Naji Hakim (né en 1955) a écrit un ouvrage émouvant pour choeur et orgue. Le 5 Choralvariationen résultat de la joie céleste dans la voix d'un ensemble gracieux pour orgue seul, puis Hakim conduit à un ensemble pour choeur a cappella et un canon pour soprano et alto avec accompagnement d'orgue. Avec une Toccata en mouvement, qui est complété par un adagio expressive dans le milieu, se terminant le travail expressif. / Choeur Mixte Et Orgue

This Fantasia is founded on the following traditional English carols: The Truth Sent From Above (Herefordshire) words and tune; Come All You Worthy Gentlemen (Somerset) words and tune; On Christmas Night (Sussex) words and tune; There Is A Fountain (Herefordshire) tune only; together with fragments of other well-known carol tunes. The work is scored for ordinary full Orchestra with Organ and set of bells (ad lib. ), or String Orchestra with Organ or Piano. Alternatively, it may be accompanied by Organ or Piano alone, played from the Vocal score, with an optional solo Cello part (H212). A chorus part for performance bysolo Baritone and TTBB is also available (W41). The chorus is required to sing in four different ways: 1. Singing the words. 2. Singing with closed lips. 3. Singing 'Ah'. 4. Singing with half-closed lips i. e. with a short 'u' sound as in the word 'but'. Par GOODALL HOWARD. Never To Forget is a powerfully emotive choral work written in honour of the NHS health and care workers in the UK who died caring for others during the COVID-19 pandemic. The text comprises their names, each sung separately in turn, in a poignant and moving homage. The piece is designed as a living tribute, to memorialise their dedication and sacrifice through each performance. This is a work of remembrance, respect and gratitude for these courageous workers, never to be forgotten. The work is scored for SATB choir and chamber ensemble, with this vocal score including a piano reduction.
