The Ukrainian Bell Carol is part of a large choral work entitled Shchedryk by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). It was first performed by students of Kiev University in December 1916. The tune is an adaptation of an old ‘shchedrivka’, a song traditionally sung on Ukrainian New Year’s Eve (January 13th) which hopes for good fortune in the year to come. In Shchedryk, Leontovych added his own the lyrics which concern the legend claiming that when Jesus was born, all the bells on earth started ringing in his honour.The tune has since been the inspiration of at least four different Christmas carols, but Philip Sparke has sourced the originalUkrainian melody to create this stirring arrangement.

The Loco-motion was the hippest dance routine to hit the clubs in the 1960s. In contrast to many songwriters who write songs after a trend has taken off , singer/songwriter partners and couple Gerry Goffi n and Carole King wrote the song that kicked off the entire dancesong craze. Little Eva was the fi rst of several artists to reach the top of the US charts with this hit in 1962. Let your band rise to new heights with Hideaki Miura’s funky arrangement!

The Loco-motion was een bijzonder geliefde manier van dansen in de jaren zestig. Gerry Goffin en Carole King waren met hun gelijknamige hit de trendsetter van deze muziek- en dansstijl. Dit in tegenstelling tot wat veel songwritersdoen: pas bepaalde muziek schrijven als het al een trend is. De eerste die het nummer vertolkte was Little Eva en zij scoorde er een nummer één hit mee. Au début des années 1960, le couple d’auteurs succès, Gerry Goffin et Carole King, compose la chanson, The Loco-motion, qui sera l’origine d’un phénomène qui va balayer tous les pays, le locomotion, un twist en ligne avec des mouvements de bras imitant le va-etvient des bielles de locomotives vapeur. Immortalisée aux États-Unis par Little Eva, la chanson sera reprise en France par Henri Salvador, puis par Sylvie Vartan, l’égérie des années yé-yé. Hideaki Miura en a réalisé un arrangement pour Orchestre d’Harmonie, aussi twistant que la version originale.

Christmas is full of customs and traditions, both old and new. This is especially evident in Christmas songs, some of which have been part of Christian worship for centuries. A Medieval Christmas combines three ancient melodies that are stillpopular around the world today. Philip Sparke chose Gaudete, a song of praise from the middle ages, Coventry Carol, an English song from the 14th century, and In dulci jubilo, which can also be traced back to the 14th century, toform this joyous suite.

‘God rest ye merry, Gentlemen’ is an ancient English carol. It was first published in 1833, but it can be traced as far back as the 15th century, which makes it one of the oldest carols known.

‘God rest ye merry’ is a Middle English salutation. In this manner, people wished one another greatness and might.
In modern English, the first line of this carol would read ‘May God keep you mighty, gentlemen’.

Andrew R. Mackereth has not kept to the original words in his up-tempo arrangement of the carol. It is still clearly recognizable, but the arranger has taken a good many liberties. Sometimes a particular note is held longer, at times motifs follow oneanother in various parts. If you listen carefully, you may even be able to detect a motif from another well-known song.

‘God rest ye merry Gentleman’ is een oude Engelse carol. De eerste officiële publicatie was in 1833, maar de sporen leiden tot ergens in de 15e eeuw. God rest ye merry Gentleman is daarmee één van de oudste carols.

‘God restye merry’ is een oude groet. Men wenste elkaar kracht toe.
Wanneer we de titel naar ‘onze’ tijd zouden vertalen, dan luidt die ‘May God keep you gentleman strong’.

Andrew R. Mackereth heeft zich in dit ‘up-tempo’arrangement niet aan de tekst gehouden. Het lied komt wel zeer duidelijk naar voren maar de arrangeur heeft zich de nodige vrijheid gegund. De ene keer wordt een noot langer aangehouden, een andere keer zijn het motieven die elkaarin diverse stemmen opvolgen. Als u goed luistert kunt u zelfs een motiefje uit een ander zeer bekend lied herkennen.
