Par MANTOVANI BRUNO. Lorsque Frank Madlener m'a proposé le projet de confronter un orchestre symphonique avec la lutherie électronique, j'ai tout de suite accepté ce défi sachant qu'il me faudrait rapidement fixer des contraintes très fortes, tant le champ des possibles, qu'il soit instrumental ou électroacoustique, était infini. Mon idée initiale était d'utiliser pour la première fois des transformations en temps réel, afin d'assouplir les rapports de verticalité et d'utiliser l'informatique comme un moyen d'orchestration. Celle de Frank était de se demander comment l'électronique pouvait créer l'illusion d'un orchestre déployé dans l'espace, entourant le public, et créant des configurations acoustiques inouïes. Afin de travailler sur cette problématique, j'ai décidé d'utiliser une formation orchestrale défective, ou certains instruments (notamment ceux qui étaient les moins localisables à l'écoute, comme le basson ou le cor) seraient absents et 'remplacés' dans la texture générale par l'ordinateur. Qui dit 'illusion' dit aussi 'surprise', et j'avais besoin, pour élaborer la forme de l'oeuvre, de prendre comme point de départ une source qui ait à la fois une grande diversité interne (une succession d'instants pourraient être traduits musicalement par autant de configurations acoustiques) et une cohérence. Rapidement, il m'est apparu que mes recherches étaient finalement très similaires à celles de l'immense chef espagnol Ferran Adrià, dont la cuisine joue en permanence sur le conflit entre connu et inconnu, entre référence et invention abstraite, et dont les menus sont 'composés' avec un sens de la forme absolument saisissant. Très régulièrement, je tente d'établir des liens entre la musique et les arts de la bouche (gastronomie, oenologie), par l'improvisation au piano sur des vins ou des mets, et par l'écriture (notamment d'un duo pour alto et piano, Quelques effervescences, qui s'inspire de vins pétillants du monde). Les deux univers me semblent intimement liés, dans l'immédiateté de la réception, et dans le parallélisme entre les sensations éprouvées (de nombreux musiciens font appel à des métaphores gustatives pour parler de leur travail : un accord 'épicé', une sonorité 'grasse', une orchestration 'acide'...). Le menu que j'ai eu l'honneur de déguster en 2007 au restaurant 'El Bulli' s'articulait autour de 35 plats que j'ai utilisés chronologiquement, tant l'articulation entre le salé et le sucré, les mets marins et terriens, le végétal et l'animal était, en soi, une dramaturgie parfaite. L'illusion était présente dès le premier instant. Ainsi, 'l'olive sphérique' qui débutait ce repas jouait sur le contraste entre un objet visuellement identifiable (une olive) et son 'interprétation' surprenante (il s'agissait en fait d'une reconstruction visuelle de l'olive, mais qui n'était autre que de l'huile d'olive emprisonnée dans une fine couche gélatineuse verte : aspect et goût étaient en phase, mais la texture, elle, était inouïe). Musicalement, la traduction de ce plat était assez évidente : un impact reprenant l'explosion de cet met en bouche débute la pièce, et une texture plus continue vient évoquer le déploiement de l'huile dans la bouche. Certains plats sont assez unitaires, d'autres contiennent en eux un parcours que j'ai fidèlement reproduit (par exemple la 'framboise au wasabi', qui se déguste en trois temps successifs). J'ai aussi mis en relation certains plats entre eux, afin de créer des 'retours' qui permettent à la structure musicale de sortir d'une logique de catalogue (par exemple, une fleur de capucine, dégustée avant les desserts, renvoie gustativement, et donc musicalement, à une amande fraîche qui, elle, est présente dans le premier quart du repas). Ce 'livre' s'achève sur la texture aérienne d'un papier effervescent au cassis qui conclut de façon suspensive une pièce particulièrement animée, où les masses sonores s'opposent de façon frontale, et viennent occuper tout l'espace de la salle de concert. Commande de l'Orchestre de Paris et de l'Ircam, le Livre des illusions (hommage à Ferran Adrià) est dédié à Marie Linden et Grégoire Biasini. Saint Francois D'Assise is an opera in 3 acts by Olivier Messiaen. This volume is part of the edition that includes the books with the full Orchestra scores as well as the explanations analysis and comments on each tableau. It is focused on the “Act II Tableau 4. L’Ange voyageur” which describes the appearance of the “Traveller Angel” to Saint Francis. This tableau is introduced by each of the themes of Brothers Leon Élie and Bernard and the theme of Philemon the bird. It opens as the Brothers are confronted to the Angel but don’t recognise him straight away except for BrotherBernard who reacts wisely. The Angel then requests to talk to Father Francis and the tableau finishes introducing the following part: “Act II Tableau 5. L’ange musicien”. Within this tableau 4 birdsong can be heard that is reminiscent of Messiaen's 'Bird Catalogue' collection. Based on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi this opera is set in Italy and is composed as per below: Act I: 1. La croix 2. Les laudes 3. Le baiser au lépreux Act II 4. L’ange voyageur 5. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composers of his century. Inspired by Japanese music he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity its diatonic aspect its harmony with limited transposition its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong including the 'Bird Catalogue' in 7 volumes and the 'Treatise on rhythm colour and ornithology' in 7 volumes.

Ce travail de mémoire a guidé toute cette oeuvre.Cette pièce 'est une succession d'états dont chacun annonce ce qui suit et contient ce qui précède. ...Tandis que je les éprouvais, ils étaient si solidement organisés, si profondément animés d'une vie commune, que je n'aurais su dire où l'un quelconque d'entre eux finit, où l'autre commence. En réalité, aucun d'eux ne commence ni ne finit mais tous ces prolongent les uns dans les autres'. La pensée et le mouvant Bergson.Ce présent qui dure, ce passé qui fait corps avec le présent, correspondent à un non-développement, à un non-déterminisme - chaque acte est un 'jaillissement ininterrompu de création', dans lequel il n'y a jamais deux moments identiques.Dans mon travail, l'oeuvre n'est jamais préconstruite, il n'y a pas d'esquisses préparatoires, et reste par conséquent totalement imprévisible. Composer devient alors une véritable aventure, totalement libre.Seule la mémoire, conscience du passé qui fait corps avec le présent, donne cohérence à ma musique.Cette oeuvre est dédiée à ma fille Millaray, en espérant que ces Achachilas se penchent sur elle.Marco-Antonio Perez-Raminez / Orchestre

But I love the way those countries sound in Hollywood movies and inpop culture generally: When Clint Eastwood rides south of the border when Disney’s Alladin or Mulan takes me far east when arabic pop music roars past me out of the open windows of a car... and bull fighter music and the sound of acrobatic beat-em-up’s in John Woo’s Hong Kong karate movies – and so on: powerful images splashed all over my eye balls and ear drums. My recollections of this ethnic-pop-film-music has turned itself into a symphony. And I don’t even have to just remember what I have heard: A few internet clicks gives me access to incredible sound libraries containing live-and-kicking ethnic music from my three favorite countries just waiting to be put together in new combinations and energize my personal imagery.  The symphony is like a huge slide show – musical snapshots from my travels in the western pop culture versions of three exotic locations: Mexico Arabia and China – original and popular melodies welded together by my personal musical language and associations. I use all the effects of modern pling-plong-music plus a few of my own inventions to create a spectacular contemporary orchestral sound sporting a bee hive of melodies from either East or West played simultaneously in different keys and differents tempos at once while kept firmly in place by

The hardback edition of Magnus Lindberg's Kraft (1983–85) - for Soloists and Orchestra with live Electronics. KRAFT was premiered at the Helsinki Festival by the Toimii Ensemble and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen on 4 September 1985. KRAFT was also the recipient of the Nordic Music Prize 1988. All the musical material of the piece has been prepared with a micro-computer with programmes written in FORTH allowing a very flexible control of rhythm and chord processes. The programme is based on a formalization of rules for creation of rhythmic events gestures and temporal processes and an environment allowing a graphical output for metric notation. Similar rule-based programmes control the creation of harmonic material by a comparison to previously defined and accepted chordal successions given by the composer. The control of amplification and spatialization of the soloists during the performance is done with an application written in PreFORM and running on a Macintosh computer allowing a precise control of movement in the hall in real time.

Wish You Were Here written for the Boston Pops pays homage to Colin McPhee one of the first western musicologists to study Balinese gamelan as well as to the great illustrators Carl Barks and Herge (responsible for Donald Duck & Tintin respectively). Muhly has written a completely romantic and fanciful gamelan-influenced piece. On top of this twittery and excited music a long lonesome melody unfolds. After a desolate interlude with severe ship’s-horn brass the energetic patterns start again and the long line returns this time with a triumphant revelatory ending. Arranged for orchestra this piece has a duration ofapproximately 8 minutes.
