Piano solo part for Paganini Variations - Piano Concerto No.3 by Poul Ruders (2014). Score available: WH32201 Programme note: In 1999 my friend, American guitar virtuoso David Starobin, wanted me to write a concerto for guitar and orchestra. It quickly dawned on me, that this commission presented a golden opportunity to contribute to the time-honoured tradition of composing a series of variations on Nicolo Paganini's famous 24th Caprice for violin solo, a work which itself is a set of variations. The 16 bar (with the first 4 bars repeated) theme is not particularly sophisticated or intricate, but its inherent simplicity and logic just grow on you, almost to the point ofdistraction - and the secret behind it being hauled through the wringer by composers as disparate as Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Lutoslawski is perhaps found in its - what I'll call, with a quick nervous look over my shoulder: brilliant banality. You can do anything with that tune, it'll always be recognizable and just there, however much you maul it. The piece (subtitled Guitar Concerto no 2) was written pretty quickly, premiered and subsequently recorded for Bridge Records with David and the Odense Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jan Wagner, and everybody was happy. But the story didn't end there, and it must be the ultimate proof of the durability of the theme, not to mention the flexibility and far-sightedness of David Starobin , when he 14 years later suggested why not transcribe the solo part for piano?. The idea appealed to me immediately. One thing was clear from the beginning: the new version could in no way sound like a transcription. My aim was to end up with a solo-part sounding like were it the one-and-only, the real thing, if you like. The orchestral score remains exactly the same in both cases. Both versions, the two Paganini Variations, are comparable to a set of twins, not quite identical, but almost. And both each others's equal. Poul Ruders.

Monsoon Toccata by Anthony Gilbert. 3'33; for solo piano. In memoriam Janet Owen Thomas (1961-2002). In 1988, Janet Owen Thomas met up with me in Sydney at the end of a short organ-recital tour - possibly her last before devoting herself entirely to composing. We returned to England together, doing a rapid circular tour of Northern India on the way. Alighting from the plane at Delhi we were hit by the whirling wind and torrential rain of the seasonal monsoon, and early the following morning there was also a minor earthquake. This experience determined the spirit of the music, and Northern Indian Raga determines the purely technical approach, with thequasi-improvisatory toccatalike textures acting as decoration to a slow-moving, widely-spaced modal top line which almost loses control of the overall shape at the mid-point - a reflection of the impact of those natural phenomena. ''Learning the piano is so widespread these days and good pianists so numerous that mediocrity on the instrument can no longer be accepted. In effect, the piano must be studied for eight or ten years before performance of a harder piece is attempted. Few can spare the years for this. It takes one hour to play the volume in full. Once it has been mastered, it is enough to set aside for it a little time each day and the difficulties will disappear almost like magic. Playing will become as attractive, accurate, fluent and pearly as that of the best performers.'' This piano method by the French music teacher Charles-Louis Hanon (1819-1900) appeared in 1874, with these introductory wordsaddressed to the realm of pianists. Almost a century and a half later, it remains among the most popular systems of piano tuition all around the world, and Hanon's name has become generic for systematic instrumental methods, even in types of popular music. The Virtuoso Pianist appears as a publication in six languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Hungarian. The volume in a new, decorative cover is useful to every pianist. Students with a years study behind them will succeed in mastering the exercises. Advanced pianists after working through the exercises will be able to tackle even serious technicaldifficulties. In the volume different forms of technical difficulty are encountered. The exercises may be performed on more than one piano simultaneously, so that students become accustomed to ensemble playing.

According to the distinguished musicologist Juan Bautista Varela, the Galician Treboada is a musical term out of the songbook, as its sense is merely musical. From a lexicographical point of view it means thunderstorm, storm, squall, etc. It is almost an onomatopoeic sense, due to the great noise that the bass drums, fundamental elements of the Treboada, make. The Treboada is played always on the eves of celebrations or feasts and it is played by three or five bass drums, one or two Galician bagpipes and a drum. The dispersion area of the Treboada is much reduced, according to the poet and essayist Eliseo Alonso Rodriguez, it comprises the parishes of Forcadela and Estas, both of them belong to the town of Tomino. Xose Hernique Rodriguez Portela, from Tomino, says that they also play it on the feast of the Virgin of St. Mary of Tomino eve (Virgen del Alivio de Santa Maria de Tomino). I owe him the idea of this piece, because Xose Henrique described to me how the bass drums sound in the distance, early in the morning, like great roars along with blank bullets that are shot every time a particular house donates money for the feast and they gradually approach the house until it trembles. He sang the melody I wrote and he confessed he had heard it not long ago in the rehearsal of a popular folk group where there was only a percussionist and a Galician bagpipe player, as with the drums it is difficult to appreciate the bagpipe. I also mix the Treboada with an Alborada, because in Galicia almost all the churches have loudspeakers that play this melody at around nine o'clock in the morning, the same time that the Treboada of Tomino starts playing. The title track from Jim Brickman's 2015 Christmas album, Comfort and Joy actually uses the holiday classic God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen as a jumping-off point. Brickman has explained that while his Comfort and Joy, a piano instrumental, musically quotes that mainstay, it is its own self-contained composition. This original sheet music edition presents a piano solo arrangement of the song, complete with artwork.
About Original Sheet Music Edition
Each ORIGINAL SHEET MUSIC EDITION has been arranged for piano by Alfred's talented staff of arrangers. Every effort has been made for the arrangement to be playable on the piano and to sound as close to the original recording as possible. If there are lyrics, a separate vocal line is used so that singers can easily sing along, and all lyrics as heard on the original recording are always included. Almost all arrangements are written in the original key in which they were recorded.

The piano gods of my youth were Dinu Lipatti and Clara Haskil, both mysterious, enchanting. While I only knew Lipatti from his records, I was able to see Clara Haskil live in concert twice, in Burgdorf and in Lucerne. Well, I even begged to get her autograph. er unerringly precise, almost weightless playing has remained my ideal to this day. My piano piece, written for the Concours Clara Haskil, attempts to trace the lines of her lonely, pain-stricken life, marked by relentless self-criticism and selflessness. Die Linien des Lebens sind verschieden [The lines of life are different (Scardanelli/Holderlin)] Lebenslinien (Life Lines) is dedicated to Gyorgy Kurtag on the occasion of his 95th birthday .Heinz Holliger.

Maurice Bejart's great admiration for the films of Federico Fellini and their accompanying music prompted the French choreographer to seek the opportunity to collaborate with composer Nino Rota who remained Fellini's musical alter ego throughout his life. The music for Le Moliere imaginaire, a comedie-ballet in two acts in commemoration of the great French dramatist, was created during an extended period in the summer of 1976 when Bejart and Rota had allotted almost a month to be devoted solely to this project. The version of this music for piano originated during the collaborative working phase of the two artists and appears in abbreviated form at the beginning of the ballet when the curtain rises on the first act.

What could be cuter than a cat that likes to hide in the food pantry? This charming piece, which includes an optional duet part, is a good reinforcement for the key of F major. Hands are in almost Middle CÂ position (L.H. thumb on Middle C, R.H. thumb on D). Mostly hands alone playing and R.H. has a crossover to Bass C. Darling lyrics tell the story of this real-life experience!

Throughout his life, Liszt's imagination was almost obsessed with notions of death and mourning. He composed many works on these topics, such as Pensée des morts, Funérailles, the two versions of La lugubre gondola, and Totentanz (Dance of Death), based on the Gregorian Dies irae sequence depicting the horrors of the Last Judgement. The latter project matured over a period of several decades, beginning in 1830, when Liszt heard the premiere of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, whose finale includes the Dies irae theme. Along with this musical impression, Liszt was stirred by horrifying visual representations of the dance of death by Holbein and Buffalmacco. Totentanz, composed asa series of variations, was finally completed during Liszt's Weimar period as one of its most outstanding compositions. Totentanz, composed as a series of variations, was finally completed during Liszt s Weimar period as one of its most outstanding compositions. Of the three versions for piano solo, two pianos, and piano and orchestra, this edition contains the two-hand piano solo version. This revised (2018) version is based on the New Liszt Edition, and provides a revised score, a facsimile reproduction, and critical notes. The new editorial preface orientates the reader in all the major questions regarding the work's genesis.

Vocalise, for soprano (or tenor) voice with piano accompaniment, came into being in 1910 as the final piece in Rachmaninov's Op. 34 song series. Most of the songs were tailored to suit the personalities of various outstanding Russian singers (including Chaliapin), and dedicated to them. An interesting feature of Vocalise, which was written for the soprano Antonina Nezhdanova, is that, as its title indicates, the vocal solo has no text: the performer can sing it through on any one vowel of her choice. This song became one of the composer's most popular pieces, and countless arrangements have been made of it (for orchestra, for various chamber ensembles, for violin, for cello, for almost every kind of brass instrument, for clarinet, for guitar, for harmonica, even for cello orchestra!). One of the most successful transcriptions for solo piano, first published in 1981, is the work of the world-famous Hungarian concert pianist, conductor and composer, Zoltán Kocsis.

Peter Benoit was born at Harlebeke on 17 August 1834 and died in Antwerp on 8 March 1901. He was, without doubt, the most important Flemish composer of the nineteenth century, responsible for the foundation of a Flemish national school of music. He studied at the Brussels Conservatory, where his teachers included Fétis, and won the Grote Rome Prize, the highest musical distinction in Belgium. He made use of the money from the prize for a study tour through Germany and Bohemia and afterwards settled in Paris where, in 1862, he became conductor of the Buffes-Parisiens. The following year he returned to Brussels and achieved phenomenal success with his Quadrilogie religieuse for choir and orchestra and with the oratorio of 1866, Lucifer. From then onwards he laid aside instrumental music and concentrated almost exclusively on vocal and choral music with Flemish texts. In 1867 he settled in Antwerp, where he was appointed director of the local music school, which under his leadership became the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory. In addition to his activity as a composer, he proved himself to be a remarkable educator, conductor and music administrator.

This spooky solo is for students who like really scary sounds. With a tempo mark of Hauntingly the ominous, deliciously dissonant patterns repeat in descending octaves. A piece that is quick and easy to learn (could almost be taught by rote), students will love playing this dramatic creation that will practically memorize itself. Uses accidentals, no key signatures. An awesome recital piece!
