Other Finnish works for violin contains twelve pieces for violin and piano. Though brief in duration, most of them were written for concert use, being rich and expressive and, in some cases, technically quite demanding. Others are delightful salon pieces. This volume was compiled by violinist Mirka Malmi and edited by her with pianist Tiina Karakorpi. Many of the women of Finnish origin who wrote music in the 19th and early 20th century were cosmopolitan by nature. They studied and found employment in the cultural metropolises of central Europe. Because of their gender, they generally had no opportunities for employment in national cultural institutions in Finland. Their music was mainly published outside Finland, and in most cases they enjoyed a broad network of connections, an expansive cultural sphere and a successful career.

Thomas Adès's Violin Concerto Concentric Paths, written in 2005, is one of the most important additions to the violin concerto repertoire since Ligeti's. Cast in three contrasting movements?each linked by a preoccupation with circling musical figures? the concerto, subtitled Concentric Paths now occupies a place in standard repertoire. Two lithe, rhythmically driven movements, Rings and Rounds bookend Paths, an intensely emotional and gritty exploration of passacaglia-like sequences, which peaks in a lyrical outpouring of exceptional beauty. This is the violin part and piano reduction. In just 20 minutes, this three-movement piece does something magical. The way it swirls ethereally in the first movement, exerts a tragic and vice-like grip in the chaconne-like second part and finally propels you into the uninhibited flight of the finale is like being spun into an infinite space. With Berlin Music, Brett Dean wrote a threefold homage: to the classical duo consisting of violin and piano; to the violin virtuoso Midori, for whom the piece was written; and to the city of Berlin, where he lived between the mid-1980s and 2000 and whose rich cultural life he owes much to his development as a musician and composer. The first four, relatively short movements of the five-movement work form a suite of character pieces, which is followed by a longer final movement. In summary, this turns out to be the actual main movement from which all motifs and harmonies emerged in a compositional manner. This includes tuning down the G side by a whole tone - an apparently small difference, but one that has a major effect on the timbre and resonance of the instrumentand suddenly makes previously impossible interval sequences playable. In addition, the violin in the third movement (a moto perpetuo in which Dean bows to Ravel's violin sonata) has to play with a practice damper, while the pianist changes the instrument and plays on a standing piano that is dampened by a pedal and placed next to the concert grand Expressing nervous energy in tight college spaces.

Grieg's violin sonatas are a firm staple of violin repertoire and are popular with amateurs and professionals alike. G. Henle Publishers takes this into account with a practical single-volume edition of the three sonatas. Thus, you are simply spoilt for choice as to whether you prefer the youthful zest of the first, the Nordic-folkloristic charm of the second or the mature drama of the third sonata. The opulent volume is rounded off by a small piece that is ideal as an encore: a march from Grieg's incidental music to Sigurd Jorsalfar, which the composer himself arranged for violin and piano. Therefore, this Henle Urtext edition actually offers GriegÂs complete oeuvre for this instrumentation â a âmust-haveâ for all fans of the great Nordic melodist.

Hans Winterberg's extraordinary life was written in two chapters, one Czech and one German, split right down the middle by the experience of the Shoah, which Winterberg, unlike his colleagues Ullmann, Krása, Haas and Klein, miraculously survived. In 1947, the Prague-born composer moved to Munich, where he worked for the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation. As a student of Alexander Zemlinsky and Alois Hába, he belongs both to the Czech tradition following Janácek and to the circle of the Second Viennese School. He saw himself as a bridge builder between Western and Eastern culture. The circumstances under which Winterberg was able to compose during the war years are still unclear. Although his “mixed marriage” initially saved him from deportation, he had to perform forced labour and was eventually sent to the Terezin ghetto in January 1945. The Suite for Violin and Piano was composed in 1942, the year in which both Winterberg's mother and his piano professor Thérèse Wallerstein were murdered by the Nazis. Compared to the violin sonata from 1936, the Suite is much more condensed, lasting less than seven minutes. A melody dominated by chromatic turns and expressionist harmony lend the work its melancholy character, which gives way, however, to an almost irrepressible defiance in the rhythmically percussive last movement.

The wind carries away the yellow leaves fallen on the pavement, the cafes put tables and chairs in... I evoke here a fall tour that is difficult to do quietly in Paris. How to take your time in this city with so many streets to cross (musical phrases of 3 measures), cars or buses to avoid (musical phrases starts on the second time). While the chestnut vendors are on subway entrances, how not to hurry like others (theme B) to 'catch' the subway...

Swing-style music for violin lessons? A delightful idea in itself, but suitable literature is somewhat thin on the ground. This is where the Little Swingies collection comes in: sixteen new pieces by Joachim Johow—some full-spirited and passionate, others gentler in character—introduce the student step by step to playing in the swing style. In addition to the violin part, this edition includes an easy-to-play piano accompaniment: and on top of this, MP3 recordings of both demo performances and backing tracks are available online. Little Swingies will add new momentum to violin lessons and performances alike.

Hungarian composer, pianist and ethnomusicologist Béla Bartók (1881-1945) originally completed the cycle of 85 short piano pieces FOR CHILDREN in 1909. Each piece was based on a folk tune, with the first 42 being Hungarian, and the remaining 43 being Slovakian. Famed Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigeti (1892-1973) took six of the Hungarian folk tunes and transcribed them for violin and piano. As Bartók later removed and revised some of the songs in the collection, the following numbers included are the original numbers from the 1909 collection: No. 28 - Parlando, No. 18 - Andante con moto, No. 42 - Allegro vivace, No. 33 - Andante sostenuto, No. 6 - Allegro, No. 13 - Andante, No. 38 - Poco vivace. In addition to the original, more difficult violin part he transcribed originally, Szigeti also wrote a simplified version where only the first to fourth positions are used. Both violin versions are included in this edition.

Japanese composer, Kishio Hirao (1907-1953) first studied medicine before changing to music. His 1947 Sonata for Violin and Piano is a challenging yet exciting addition to the repertoire. Hirao moved to Paris where he studied harmony, counterpoint and composition at the Ecole Cesar Franck. The Sonata is in three movements; 1) Moderato-Allegro Agitato, 2) Andante, and 3) Vivacissimo. The work is in F major, with the middle movement modulating to D major, however, tonality is substantially exploited. For all advanced violinists and pianists, Hirao's Sonata for Violin and Piano is a riveting addition to the repertoire..

Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) originally wrote Deux Mélodies Hébraïques (Two Hebrew Songs) for voice and piano for soprano Alvina Alvi, who premiered the two songs in June of 1914. While both songs include French text, the first and more popular song, Kaddisch (Holy), is also in Aramaic, while the second song, L'énigme éternelle (The Eternal Riddle), is in Yiddish. Ravel orchestrated both for voice and orchestra in 1920, and many other transcriptions, particularly of Kaddisch, have followed over the years. This transcription by the French composer and arranger Lucien Garban put Kaddisch into the violin repertoire, where it finds regular performance.

This work by 17-year-old Fazil Say is from the early creative period of the Turkish composer. Supported by Aribert Reimann and David Levine, he composed the four pieces for the 750th anniversary of the founding of Berlin, and they were premiered during the celebrations in 1987. The first monodic piece already shows the oriental melody that became more pronounced later, whereas the other pieces surprise with novel tone colours, inside-piano effects and specific rhythmic features.

Musicians onstage stand in the limelight and enjoy their fame whereas after performance they become shrouded in a strange fog of isolation. Light is associated with ascent and descent: it can lead into brightness, but equally into darkness. Light can illuminate and yet bedazzling; fog stands for insecurity, uncertainty and anxiety ... but also for mysticism and wafting dreams. Somehow time stands still...
