Opening with an edge of uncertainty, soft brass fanfares immediately begin to build in intensity until bold harmonic lines rise to support the soaring melodic material. A flurry of rhythmic activity catapults the work forward in joyous fashion while lyrical lines continue in stark contrast. Eventually, the opening fanfare material returns while woodwind flourishes drive the work to an exciting conclusion!

The Lord will overshadow you with his pinions, and you will find refuge under his wings. His faithfulness will encompass you with a shield. Psalm 91:4-5 To feel safe and to feel cared for, these are two of the great yearnings of the human heart. What a blessing it is, especially during times of distress or uncertainty, to know that we aren't alone, that someone is reaching out to help us and even hold us. It could be a family member or a friend. It could be a still small voice whispering, It's okay. I've got you. It could even be a loving community, like a choir, assuring us that we are known, that we are loved, that we belong. The first word - scapulis - is translated as pinions. On a bird, a pinion is the outer part of the wing, including the flight feathers. The opening measures, with a one-measure phrase followed be a three-measure phrase, are meant to evoke the image of wings unfurling to welcome in. All through this section - mm. 1-20 - encourage phrasing that is never hurried but moves with intention to the last stressed syllable of each phrase, before ebbing slightly. This section is all about reassurance and comfort. In mm. 21-30 we have a new section where uncertainty grows. At this point the text - and you will find refuge under his wings - is more aspirational than definitive. Leaning into non-chord tones will help make this feeling of uncertainty more palpable. Places where this occurs: Alto I - Measure 22 the Ab in pennis, m. 26 the Bb in sperabis Soprano II - Measure 23 the A natural in pennis, m. 29 the C in sperabis Soprano I - Measure 24 the C in pennis, m. 28 the D in sperabis The apex of the piece is at m. 30 where the yearning for comfort and assurance reaches its height, finding that comfort in the arrival back at Eb major in m. 39. The phrase veritas ejus (his faithfulness), with its triplet figure should flow gently, like a musical carress. The final reassurance occurs at m. 51 as we return to the melody, and the homophonic texture, of the opening. Even as the piece gets softer and softer, encourage the singers to keep energy moving through each phrase. The structure and feel of this piece was inspired by one of the all-time great settings of yet another Psalm of assurance - Felix Mendelssohn's Lift Thine Eyes. The Lord will overshadow you with his pinions, and you will find refuge under his wings. His faithfulness will encompass you with a shield. Missa in incerto tempore (The Davison Mass) (2018) was commissioned by the Harvard Glee Club. It was premiered by the Harvard Glee Club, Cambridge, Massachusetts (Andrew Clark, Director of Choral Activities) and the All Saints' Choir of Men and Boys (Ashmont Boy Choir), Dorchester, Massachusetts; (Andrew Sheranian, Organist and Master of Choristers). The Latin title, meaning Mass in uncertain times, refers to the centuries of comfort, inspiration, and spiritual enrichment that the mass (and the musical settings for its celebration) has provided to many individuals through difficulty and uncertainty. I cannot deny that the times in which this piece was composed are the most nationally and internationally uncertain of my own life to date. That fact had a definite impact on the tone and emotional character of the piece. However, there is a universality as well, since one could readily feel that all times have a sense of uncertainty, especially since we never know exactly what the future holds. The first three movements have somewhat enigmatic endings. The end of the Agnus Dei tries to temper (but not erase) that uncertainty with a degree of optimism and fervor in a passionate plea of Dona nobis pacem. Instrumentation: SATB Chorus, Men's Chorus, and Two Organs (Opt. One Organ) Duration: 20' Composed: 2018 Published by: Zimbel Press.

“Rising into a New Era” was commissioned by the city of Landeck in 2023 to commemorate its 100th anniversary since being declared a city. The composition serves as the introductory part of a trilogy, encapsulating the years from 1923 to 1956, depicting Landeck's transformation from a market town to a city. The outset of the piece is characterized by a reserved and hushed atmosphere, reflecting the initial uncertainty during a period of economic challenges. The optimistic anticipation of a new beginning is only echoed by the sound of the city's new bells. The central motif, threading throughout the entire composition, is derived from the name of the city: LAnDECk (A-D-E-C). This motif unfolds at the onset within the resonance of the city's bells, gradually evolving into the main theme through the gentle tones of the clarinets. Following the initial years of the burgeoning city, where a positive societal shift and newfound security are symbolized by a second musical theme, the sudden eruption of the Second World War disrupts this progress. A mournful melody, borrowed from the cheerful second theme of the piece, speaks of sorrow, nostalgia, yet also solace and hope for peace and freedom. A “Vivace furioso” captures the uncertainties and intense turbulence of the war. These tumultuous emotions gradually settle, culminating after a delicate oboe and saxophone solo into the now powerful main theme presented in the form of a majestic chorale. A “Vivace con bravura” brings the composition to a radiant conclusion, signifying a strengthened future for the city of Landeck.

Edward Fairlie's Storm and Urge is a significant work for wind band and portrays a journey of emotional turbulence. The title comes from the German “Sturm und Drang,” a literary and musical movement of the late 1700s which focused on extremes of emotion. Opening with a simple and reflective theme, we are then taken through a range of emotional settings from uncertainty to resistance, and then calm resolve and self-knowledge. With a variety of textures and vivid imagery, this is a masterful work for the contemporary ensemble. Duration: 9:00(Recorded by the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble – Ingrid Martin, conductor).

I composed this setting in my last weeks of study at Westminster Choir College. The Latin text (Sine paenitentia enim sunt dona et vocatio Dei) translates roughly to “Truly, without regret are the gifts and callings of God.†This piece serves not only as an outward affirmation for all to embrace and use their God-given talents, but also as an inward mantra for myself, as I move into an uncertain period in my life after completing my undergraduate studies. Many of the colors and textures found within this piece were influenced by my experience singing with the Westminster Williamson Voices for two years. While the “sine paenitentia†text may allow shades of doubt to creep in, all uncertainty and fear is dispelled upon singing “sunt dona et vocatio Dei.†—Cortlandt Matthews Here is an amazing performance by The Westminster Williamson Voices at the Choral Insititute at Oxford. When RoseWind Duo’s Clifford Leaman and Scott Herring commissioned me for Silver Linings, we could not have anticipated that we would be in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic when I composed the piece. In the early summer of 2020, when the three of us met virtually to discuss possible topics, we had all been in lockdown for several months; the causes and effects of the lockdown were at the forefront of our discussion. In themidst of daily tragedies, I had been seeing news stories using the words “silver lining†to describe unexpectedly positive situations arising from our global situation, ranging from small effects (i.e. people having time to work on projects they never could get around to doing) to global ramifications (resurging animal populations in areas where they’re no longer challenged for space with humanity).Silver Linings consists of two movements. Groundhog Day, the first movement, is slow and brooding. It embodies the strong feeling of déjà vu that so many of us experienced early on into lockdown, as we seemed to live the same day repeatedly with minor variances to our schedules. There are two main musical gestures: the first opens the piece as a slow, ascending minor chord which is a representation of uncertainty, and the secondis a falling minor scale. These gestures depict how our lives were reduced to the basic building blocks of life – wake up, eat, work, eat, sleep – as our daily activities and livelihoods were suddenly knocked down. These same two gestures are utilized in the energetic second movement, Making Lemonade, except that they are spun around to reveal their silver linings: the minor chord falls to sound centered and decisive, and the minor scale rises as it bubbles with activity. Among the seeds of despair are also foundseeds of hope, and the saxophone and marimba explore this hopefulness with great vigor and excitement.

This piece, dedicated to the memory of a heroic feat, does not desire to be classed as a Symphonic Poem in the generally accepted sense of this term. It does not attempt to picture, or to strictly follow, the various mechanical and realistic phases of this heroic adventure although, on the other hand, it does not entirely avoid allusion to such realistic phenomena as are characteristic of and inseperable from the nature of this adventure and the technical means of its realization. The composer's main object, however, was to try to express in sound the emotional phases of an adventure that might be called a prototype of modern romance; to touch upon its human aspect and its ethical meaning, not only in the relation to the individual, but to humanity in general. To the individual, the venturing Hero, refer the opening phrases; the sinister aspect of a bold inspiration at its first manifestation. To his human environments, his character and conquering spirit, refer certain lyrical as well as martial and ehical themes. According to the nature of the venture, the clash of motoric forces and that of an indomitable spirit with the threatening elements presented themselves for musical consideration as well as the plausible uncertainty of the outcome, the increasing conficence and the final victory, and triumphant victory itself. And as emotion in its purest and most intense form reverts to the primitive, the composer thought it not amiss to make fragmentary use of the anthems of two nations, thus symbolizing the appeal from soil to soil; an appeal that found its joyous echo in all humanity. And in the midst of the turbulent rejoicing stands the lone figure of the Hero whose daring had materialized the dream of aeons.

Musicians onstage stand in the limelight and enjoy their fame whereas after performance they become shrouded in a strange fog of isolation. Light is associated with ascent and descent: it can lead into brightness, but equally into darkness. Light can illuminate and yet bedazzling; fog stands for insecurity, uncertainty and anxiety ... but also for mysticism and wafting dreams. Somehow time stands still...

In 2011, Barbara Garrop, my mother, commissioned me to write a piano trio in memory of Norman Garrop, my father, who passed away about thirty years ago. When I started brainstorming about topics for the piece, I found it difficult to recall many moments of my early life involving my father. Too many years had passed, and the memories that I could summon were of achild looking up to her father, not an adult relating to an equal. However, while collecting stories of my father from various family members, along with discovering a number of objects that had once belonged to him and that I had stored away in boxes decades ago, I began to realize that this piece wasn't so much about my father as it was about my re-discovering the man that he was: a loving husband and dad who cared deeply about his family and his passions (which included bike riding, collecting coins, strumming our guitar, playing baseball, watching football games, entertaining people, helping to run local theater and puppet productions, and carving objects out of wook); an accountant who dreamed of a better future: a treasurer of our local synagogue; an early advocate for computers (we owned an Apple II+); and a pranster with a great sense of humor. Ultimately, I decided to musically tell the story of my search for these memories. In the first movement (Without), a child calls out in a sing-song voice, searching for her lost parent. This search intesifies over the course of the movement through a series of themes, including a stepping motif in which a two-note progression steadily climbs higher, a pseudo-jewish folksong, and a passionate longing theme. The child's search becomes increasingly intense throughout the movement, calling out fervently and repeatedly to the parent; the movement ends in a moment of great tnesion and uncertainty. The second movment (Within) quietly opens with the lost parent finally answering, represented by a solo cello; the child (now personified by the violin) has found the parent within the sanctuary of her own heart. This movement highlights the joy and solemnity of this beautiful discovery. -S.G.

I composed Sing with Me during the summer of 2020 as my own personal response to the relentless series of heartaches that we faced: the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the anguish of not being able to sing together and the rise of social justice crises across the country. It is the first piece for which I have also written the text. At the time, I was unsure of what the fall semester would look like for my own choir. Would we be in person? If so, for how long? Therefore, I designed the piece to be accessible and adaptable to whatever situation we faced. It is my wish that the message of hope and unity will resonate with all who sing or hear it.Sing with me, as I sing with you,Let the music revive us anew;Yearning for beautiful harmony,Come and sing with me. All the world is longing for peace,For all meaningless hatred to cease;Joining together, your hand in mine,Let our voices shine! Dream with us, together as one,For the day when the battle is done;Fervently striving for unity,Come and dream with me.Come and sing with me. .

George Butterworth (1885-1916), an English composer whose life was cut short at the Battle of the Somme, wrote two song cycles based on A SHROPSHIRE LAD, a collection of 63 poems by A.E. Housman. Conceived as an epilogue, the orchestral rhapsody to A SHROPSHIRE LAD is widely considered to be his masterpiece. The London Symphony Orchestra gave the first performance at the Leeds Festival on October 2, 1913 under the direction of Arthur Nikisch. Originally titled THE LAND OF THE LOST CONTENT, it looks back at an idyllic world threatened, perhaps prophetically, by the fear of uncertainty and loss. Instrumentation: 2.2+EH.2+BCl.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp: Hp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).

Thanks to its skilful combination of Romantic melody and sparkling virtuosity, Koussevitzky’s Double Bass Concerto op. 3 has been one of the most popular works of its genre since its Moscow premiere in 1905. No wonder, for the virtuoso double bass player Koussevitzky had composed it for his very own instrument. As early as 1906/07 a first piano reduction was published in Moscow, followed by a second in 1910 in Leipzig. However, both contain so many mistakes in the solo part that there is still uncertainty about the correct musical text in many passages to this day. The double bass player Tobias Glöckler has therefore prepared his Urtext edition using several sources: as well as the manuscript performance material and the piano reductions published during the composer's lifetime, he has also studied recordings with Koussevitzky as soloist - thereby finally producing a thoroughly-researchedUrtext edition of the orchestral score and piano reduction of this classic of the double bass literature. As with all double bass concertos published by Henle Publishers, this edition also contains the piano reduction by Christoph Sobanski in two keys (E minor and F sharp minor) for performance with solo or orchestral tuning.

Although specifically describing the uncertainty of approaching night and an evening prayer, Hymn at Twilight is actually about the human emotions of doubt, insecurity, hope and resolve. This solemn piece opens quietly and introduces a recurring four-note rising figure. Optimism, anxiety and resignation alternate, with the flute taking centre stage. Brass and woodwind take up the chorale. The piece ends in a mood of sanguine optimism.
