Saxophone and String Orchestra-As a musical genre of the 18th century it is unusual that a divertimento is composed for the Alto Saxophone an instrument which was not developed until the mid-19th Century. Yet Roger Boutry (b. 1932) proves with his Divertimento for Alto Saxophone that the combination of style and instrument make for a thrilling performance. French composer Boutry won many prizes during his time at the Paris Conservatoire as well as for his professional work. He has over 100 published works in which he successfully unites diverse modern and traditional trends. He was named Personality of the Year in 1989 for all of his artisticactivities. Divertimento is cast in three movements beginning in a highly rhythmic and syncopated way before moving on to a moody and balladlike second movement that ends with a cadenza. This leads into the third movement a light presto finale. Boutry's Divertimento for Alto Saxophone and Piano accompaniment is an essential and varied addition to the advanced saxophonist's repertoire.

The great Fantaisie Italienne is a piece composed by Eugène Bozza and transcribed for Alto Saxophone and Piano by Marcel Mule. Quite difficult it requires some advanced skills to be executed perfectly. Starting Moderato it opens with a cadenza which includes some Solo Saxophone sections and continues with a short and lyrical melody. It closes on a nice rhythmic section in Allegro. Really nice to play and to listen to  Fantaisie Italienne is amazing to demonstrate your skills and technical abilities during a recital and a concert. Eugène Bozza wondifferent prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prizes for the Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He composed several operas chamber works and ballets among others.

Composed for the Paris Conservatoire contest this edition of Musique De Concert by Marius Constant is for Alto Saxophone and Piano and was dedicated to Marcel Mule. Rated difficult (8°) this piece demonstrates all the required skills to brilliantly pass the contest. < strong>Concert music is divided in four distinct movements each with a different style: I. Toccata – Lento (4/4 tempo 69) II. Aria – Largo (3/4 tempo 50) III. Ostinato – Allegro Molto (12/8 tempo 168) IV. Intermezzo – Allegro moderato (4/4 tempo 144) V. Variazoni – Deciso (5/4 4/4 3/4 4/4 6/4 tempo minim 80) Marius Constant (1925-2004) was a French composer born in Romania. He composed three operas an oratorio seven ballets and many pieces for orchestra. His most famous work is the “Twilight Zone” theme song.

Ballade for Alto Saxophone and Piano was composed in 1938 by the French composer Henri Tomasi (1901-1971). Introduced by a poem by Suzanne Mallard his wife Ballade is a 15-minute work that covers and alternates between different styles such as Andantino Guigue and Blues. The poem refers to a clown who claims his story to the night. It is a short poem of four verses composed with rhymes in A/B/A/B formation. Henri Tomasi who won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927 also composed a variety of concertos for Alto Saxophone for Trumpet and for Trombone as well as some ballades.

André Chailleux's Andante and Allegro for Alto Saxophone and Piano composed in 1958 is an ideal performance piece for intermediate saxophonists. Beginning with a lyrical lent passage the piece slowly moves towards a 6/8 Allegro which includes many semiquaver flourishes for the Saxophone. French composer Michel Mériot (1928-2003) studied at the Conservatory of Poitiers before joining the band of the French Marines. He then studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won prizes for Saxophone proving himself as a highly competent player of the instrument. His compositions including Sicilienne Et Dance for Alto Saxophone and Piano have provded that he is also a highly capable composer. With a typical performance lasting around 3 minutes and 10 seconds Mériot's Sicilienne Et Dance is suitable for intermediate standard saxophonists. The Sicilienne containstypical characteristics of the musical style including a 6/8 meter dotted rhythms and moderate tempo. Contrastingly the Dance is highly rhythmic with many semiquaver flourishes in a 2/4 meter. For all aspiring saxophonists seeking alternative repertoire Mériot's Sicilienne Et Dance is a delightful addition to the repertoire.

Ballade Et Divertissement by Armando Ghidoni is a piece for Alto Saxophone and Piano. It can also be played by Tenor or Soprano Saxophone. Written for intermediate players “Élementaire 2” this nice piece last 5’30 minutes and is dedicated to Guy Reverdi. Starting with an Adagio section (tempo = 60) the piece features a solo cadenza for the Saxophone which is followed by a Moderato part. Really melodious this piece can be used for a contest or in recitals. Armando Ghidoni is a French composer with Italian origins who plays Saxophone and Flute. Hehas been edited since 1989 by Alphonse Leduc.
