Devenu sourd à l'âge de quarante-six ans, Goya a réalisé vers 1820 de mystérieuses fresques appelées Pinturas negras sur les murs de sa maison de campagne madrilène, la Quinta del Sordo. C'est sur ces 'tableaux noirs' que s'appuie la composition de La Maison du Sourd pour flûte et orchestre. Goya fut le premier artiste de son époque à refuser toute utilité publique et sociale à l'art. Il renonce aux fonctions d'embellissement et de transfiguration qui avaient été traditionnellement dévolues à la peinture et va jusqu'à rejeter l'idée même des règles de l'art. Goya a frayé une voie nouvelle en peinture, qu'il oriente de la réalité au rêve. En faisant de la peinture une sorte de sténographie des pulsions, Goya invente le style de l'esquisse. Goya reçut sans doute de Tiepolo le secret de son art. Celui-ci apprit à Goya l'univers enchanté, lumineux qui caractérise la culture de l'Europe pastorale de l'Europe du rococo. Il lui transmit les moyens techniques propres à rendre la texture des songes : précision, économie et légèreté de la touche, fraîcheur de la palette, limpidité cristalline du coloris, intensité lumineuse de la gamme chromatique. Tiepolo embrasse les nuées - ses fresques de plafond sont des prodiges perspectifs d'architecture feinte, avec des ciels mauves, des nuages rosés, argentés ou gris bleutés, qui se détachent d'un fond bleu azur ou vert pâle. Tiepolo accomplit la synthèse de toute la tradition décorative vénitienne qu'il transfigure dans des atmosphères insaisissables. Il s'échappe aussi dans l'univers intimiste de l'élégie mélancolique, parfois teintée d'amertume, qu'il confie à des petites toiles de chevalet, à des dessins et des eaux-fortes. Les Vari Capricci, gravés en 1740 et publiés par ses fils en 1775, les Scherzi di fantasia, série de vingt-quatre estampes qu'il exécute entre 1739 et 1757, découvrent un monde inquiétant qui annonce la violence sourde et la sombre irrationalité des Caprices de Goya. Goya avait commencé à peindre de vastes paysages lumineux, avec des bleus célestes et des verts juteux, sur les murs de sa maison de campagne qu'il avait achetée en 1819, aux portes de Madrid. Il vivait avec une femme encore jeune et séparée de son mari, la belle Leocadia Weiss - la Manola qui ouvre le cycle des peintures murales de la Quinta del Sordo -, et sa petite Rosario que l'on présume être la fille du peintre. Comment ces vastes paysages, d'une grandiose sérénité, composés à la manière du monde radieux de Tiepolo, ont-ils pu être ensevelis sous des alluvions de noir dense, de gris, de brun et de jaune terreux, qui sont celles des Peintures noires ? Nul ne le sait. Seules subsistent quelques tristes évidences : la lutte fratricide, la sauvagerie des instincts, les espoirs réduits à néant, la vie mutilée, la mort imminente. Ici, deux hommes déjà à demi enlisés dans les sables mouvants s'assomment à coups de gourdins. Là, une frise de sorcières accroupies, terrifiées, couvant un feu mauvais, acclament le Grand Bouc. Assise au fond, à droite, la Manola assiste impassible à la scène. Tout proche, c'est le Sabbat. Ailleurs, Asmodée : le démon du plaisir impur, le vol de la volupté fauché par une décharge de fusil. Judith et Holopherne : la vengeance féminine, la violence du désir inassouvi. Plus loin, deux femmes rient d'un homme à gorge déployée. Les Parques tranchent le fil de la vie. Saturne dévore ses fils. Un chien nage à contre-courant. On s'accorde à penser que les Peintures noires sont le geste d'amertume et de désespoir d'un homme qui voit l'Espagne sombrer définitivement dans le despotisme et la réaction. Mais il y a plus. Goya est le premier peintre du monstrueux et de l'abject. Il décrit la condition de misère d'une humanité qui recule d'horreur devant la mort, mais la préfère encore à la vie, dans la régression et le dégoût de soi. La folie des hommes tient moins à leur impuissance à s'émanciper qu'à leur refus de l'autonomie. Goya n'a jamais renoncé au rationalisme des Lumières ni aux thèmes de réflexion universalistes. Mais pour lui, la fin de l'art n'est plus de plaire et d'instruire, mais de témoigner d'un rapport essentiel de l'homme à lui-même, jusque dans la révélation de l'inéducable. Dans ma propre 'Maison du Sourd', j'ai évoqué, en première partie de l'oeuvre, ce rêve luministe, ce rideau de lumière qui évoque l'intensité et l'espace du monde radieux de Tiepolo, et dont le large panorama avait formé la toile de fond du premier projet des peintures murales de la Maison du Sourd. C'est une très longue plage suspensive où le soliste n'intervient pas. La seconde partie, qui laisse libre cours à la stridence de l'expression subjective, est au contraire dominée par le mélisme tourmenté et replié sur lui-même de la flûte. L'orchestre libère de l'énergie en même temps qu'il en accumule, à la manière d'une spirale qui ne cesse de se contracter et de se replier sur elle-même, jusqu'à l'étranglement final.
