Includes original version of the Sinfonia BWV 1046a. Authoritative Urtext edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.1 in F major BWV 1046. The six Brandenburg Concertos BWV 1046-1051 prized jewels of the world's musical heritage were written in 1721 during Bach?s appointment in Cöthen. Of the six works Bach originally wrote earlier versions of numbers 1 and 5 which differ not only with regard to articulation but also at times different tones different rhythms instrumentation and of course form. These Urtext publications [BA 5201-BA 5206] taken from the New Bach Edition now giveperformers the possibility to play these earlier versions perhaps even alongside the version known today. In the earlier version of Concerto No.1 (BWV 1046a) which according to the editor of the edition Heinrich Besseler seems to have been Bach?s favourite among the six there is no Violino Piccolo part to be found and the Violin concerto-like 3rd movement as well as the Polonaise movement are also absent. In nearly every bar the articulation in one instrument or another differs from the later version; for example the 16th-note slurs in bars 1 and 2 of the Horns are missing in the later score the Oboe slurs and trills in m.12 are also not to be found. The later version has the Cello separated from the Continuo which means that the 16ths in m.7 are not to be played by the Violone grosso.

Mozart scholars, libraries and of course all lovers of Mozart?s stage works now have the opportunity of acquiring these priceless manuscripts in flawless reproductions. At the same time, all risks about preserving Mozart?s legacy for the world of music are taken care of. Mozart?s original manuscripts of the seven operas are held by several libraries. For five of the operas, the different acts have even ended up in different libraries following World War II. Thus, the autograph of Act I of ? Così fan tutte ? is in the Jagiellonian Library in Kraków and the second act in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin ? Preußischer Kulturbesitz . In order to achieve a uniformly high level of precision in reproduction and authenticity of colour both within a work and for all seven editions, the use of the same technical equipment in all the different places was a prerequisite. Specialist from the Salzburg firm ? Kirchberger Photography? were employed, were provided with the latest equipment by the Packard Humanities Institute and also given special additional training in the modern technology by specialists in the USA. Proofs of each edition were compared with the original in each location and improved until the likeness could not be bettered in all details. Mozart?s music and text notation is reproduced extremely clearly, and even those places where Mozart corrected or had rubbed out marks he had already made, appear in these editions in a previously unmatched transparency.

Symphony No. 9 in D minor Op. 125 Facsimile Score. With his ninth symphony, Beethoven ventured into new musical dimensions. In the final movement, soloists and choir join forces with the orchestra and Schiller?s ?Ode to Joy? becomes a global aspiration, a declaration: ?Alle Menschen werden Brüder ! / All mankind becomes brothers.? In his commentary the great Beethoven scholar Lewis Lockwood describes the plea which Beethoven wanted to deliver at that time with this work and how views of this have changed over the centuries. Jonathan Del Mar, a renowned editor of Beethoven?s works, comments on noteworthy passages in the autograph manuscript and allows the reader to share in the composer?s working process.,br>Already the large-format paper which Beethoven used for some passages makes the large forces clear. Cuts, sometimes reversed later, show how he wrestled with the final version of the musical text and refined it right down to the last detail. The history of the autograph manuscript reflects an episode in German history: after storage in various places because of the war, the major parts were returned to Berlin but were initially divided by the Berlin Wall and only reunited in 1990. Martina Rebmann who is the Director of the Music Department at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin traces this story. In 1972 the main theme of the last movement was chosen by the Council of Europe as the European anthem and in 1985 it was adopted by the European Community as its official anthem. In 2001 the manuscript was listed in UNESCO?s Memory of the World Register. For the first time the facsimile presents all the parts of the manuscript including pages preserved in Bonn and Paris as well as the trombone and contrabassoon parts. Parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk Programme note Morpheus in the Greek mythology is the most powerful of the Oneroi the gods of dreams. He is the one who sends us our dreams and he may appear to us within the dreams in disguise. Analogous to the logic of dreams in Morpheus everything is interwoven as chains of associations appear to logically lead us from one line of thought to another. Everything seems strangelyfamiliar. But the logic is treacherous and we already feel it may only be valid within the dream. Nothing that appears similar is actually ever really the same. Half awakening we struggle to hold on to a vanishing world we felt we were on the verge of understanding but which we already know will eventually escape us when we fully awake. Composer's Notes:This piece written during the winter months of 2000-2001 consists of one movement Allegro con fuoco in which an old score is revisited raided and ravished by its composer. The earlier music hadbeen written in the mid-fifties for a stage work Maratona di Danza and for its maker the director Luchino Visconti.Elements from the older piece reappear on and off like shadows under the surface of new ones like more orless vague memories images of young people suffering pain and despair in their struggle for survival in a barbaric pitiless modern world.My new composition is a kind of concerto for very large symphony orchestra an étude onconstant and often rapid musical changes of mood and colours built on a variety of rhythmic figures incessantly and brutally pushing the music ahead. Sometimes it is as though voices are weeping sometimes crying out loud withpain with anxiety under the cold hearted pressure of an overwhelming violence. Score-Henry Cowell's Seven Rituals Of Man uses music to explore the journey of Man from Birth to Death similar to the All the world’s a stage monologue from Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Symphony No.11 reflects the work and struggle love dance and play mystical imagination and lament for death all the stages of a man's life. The seven rituals are all very different and alternate between relatively conventional scoring for strings and winds and some really unusual writing for full orchestra with extensive percussion.

This beautiful serene melody represents the ongoing and awesome legacy embedded in the profession of education. What we teach and pass on to our children affects the country the world and the future. The hope the responsibility and the wonder are effectively communicated in this lovely original work. Orchestral work commissioned by the BBC and premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Andrew Davis The Barbican Hall November 1992.Quoting Lindberg: 'After having written a Piano Concerto in 1991preceded by three works for different orchestral effectives (Kinetics Marea and Joy) I felt that I had come to an end with a certain musical expression and also compositional technique. All these works were based upon anextended chaconne principle with chord chains cycling around undergoing constant transformation and being articulated in a very gestural way. The musical paradox and evidently also the challenge was the discrepancy between abrick-like method expressed in a world of gestures (with all difficulties involved in conceiving music out of phrases) aiming at a continuity in terms of progression and development.After the Piano Concerto in the autumn of1991 I strongly felt that I couldn't continue in that direction anymore. I started to work on a project called Corrente for 16 players as a study for the full orchestra version entitled Corrente II.In order to bring theharmonic and rhythmic world closer to each other I abandoned the chaconne principle and based the harmony on different scale aggregates. By combining these scales and by filtering or by enhancing them with additional pitchesbased on more acoustically oriented views of the scales by considering them as partials of virtual fundamentals I was able to work in a rich harmonic world without actually having to do harmonic transformations and progressions.The rhythmic material was based on pattern figures with a rather kaleidoscopic approach of repetition and variation.By combining these pattern figures and scales aggregates I wanted to give the musical expression a 'narrative'sense of streams and directions moving around in different orchestral constellations.Corrente II for symphony orchestra is based on the same material as the piece for chamber orchestra. Symphony No. 6 'At The End Of Day' (1997-99) for Orchestra by Per Nørgård. Programme note: ”… with the Lord a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day”  (New Testament 2 Peter 3:8)  My SYMPHONY NO. 6 was commissioned by the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra the Göteborg Symphony Orchestra and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra to be premiered at the millenium 2000.  The subtitle AT THE END OF THE DAY can be understood literally or it can mean “when all is added up”. However in my opinion nothing ever quite adds up there is always “something” missing any ending will be provisional ...  This symphony appears to end only a few minutes into the first movement the first passage as the music fades away to almost-silence after a start of flying colours. But then there is still “something” a small motive (first heard in the initial sound-waves) which reappears hesitant but persistent and this embryo is what leads on the musical progression. An agitated section of many instrumental voices comes next until all the voices become obsessed with the same phrase a see-saw motive based on thirds. This section evolves into almost martial ferocity when broken off by a tutti descent into an extreme bass-world (a bass-world which actually permeates the whole symphony emplyoing instruments that I have never used before: double-bass tuba double-bass trombone double-bass clarinet and bass flute).  The second movement the second passage apparently takes off where the first passage ended but now the events are more ambiguous and the same music may be perceived as fast-moving one moment and slow-moving the next. Robert Simpson’s Symphony No.9 is a powerful experience. There is mystery and a sense of concentrated intensity here carried in a single monumental movement driven by one basic pulse. Simpson composed this work for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and it was first performed by them conducted by Vernon Handkley at Poole in Dorset On 8 April 1987. Shostakovich’s fifteenth symphony differs substantially in many ways from his other late symphonies. The eleventh (1957) subtitled The Year 1905 and the twelfth (1960) subtitled The Year 1917 are both programmatic symphonies relating to political and historical events within the year of which they are subtitled. The next two symphonies are sung texts with vocal and/or choral parts: thirteenth (1962) and fourteenth (1969) symphonies.With the Symphony No.15 In A Op.141 Shostakovich’s last foray in the genre the composer returned to a purely instrumental and non-programmatic composition which inhabits a purely emotional andintellectual plane quite removed from the world of politics and history.Available here is the pocket or study score of Shostakovich’s last symphony the Symphony No.15 in A Op.141. Oper In Drei Bildern-This masterpiece composed by Erich Wolfgang Korngold when he was only 23 was one of the great stage successes of the 1920s and 30s before being removed from theatre schedules by the National Socialists. Rediscovered in the 1970s it has enjoyed continuing popularity ever since. The libretto was compiled by the composer?s father the music critic Julius Korngold writing under the pseudonym ?Paul Schott? a combination of the name of the protagonist and the publishing house. A vivacious theatre group comes to liven up the gloomy city of Bruges (here a symbol of death) and the widower Paul is forced to decide between the past and the present.Korngold was fascinated by this symbolic plot and created an iridescent orchestral score washed in vivid colours. A variety of operatic devices are intermingled as if viewed through a kaleidoscope: opulent melodic arias advanced harmonies psychoanalytic profundity and cinematic transitions oscillating between reality and dream worlds guarantee the continuing modernity of this work up to the present day.
