Quinze jours de travail suffirent à Haendel pour achever la partition. Le résultat est en réalité une vaste adaptation de plusieurs œuvres antérieures. Rinaldo a été créé à Londres en 1711. Les décors féeriques et chevaleresques étaient éblouissants pour l?époque et c?est sans doute pour cela que l?œuvre fut plébiscitée par le public.Dans le merveilleux jardin du palais enchanté d?Armide (l?alliée d?Argante le rival de Rinaldo) Almirène (la promise de Rinaldo) pleure sa captivité dansson air Lascia ch?io pianga l?un des plus beaux qu?Haendel ait écrits. 'The Alchymist's Journal' gets its title from the book of the same name by American author Evan S. Connell. The book fictionalises a number of famous Alchemist’s writings each one developing another's thoughts thus continuing one idea but changing it subtly to provide a new view point or way of thinking. This process is in fact alchemical as one idea transmutes into another. This idea is parallel to the processes at work within these variants. The whole work is constructed from 6 notes (C A B flat E flat F sharp E) and is presented in nine different sections each individual in mood but still based upon the original pitches. This is not a thematic set ofvariations as the themes are developed one at a time from small segments of the six notes. For example the opening theme is the complete number of pitches the second theme uses three notes transposed then repeated at the original level and so on. Harmonically the six notes can be divided into two triads A minor and E flat minor – each key beginning and ending the piece respectively. Whilst this is essentially abstract music with no programme there is an introduction menacing scherzo slow reflective section followed by a recap of the scherzo and final coda. 'The Alchymist’s Journal' was commissioned by the Brass Band Heritage Trust at the suggestion of Paul Hindmarsh to whom the work is dedicated.

Juchés sur d?impressionnants pitons de grès calcaire les monastères des Météores situés au nord de la Grèce continentale offrent une vue fascinante sur la vallée draînée par le fleuve Pinios.Les rochers des Météores ont poussé les premiers ermites à occuper le lieu dès le IXe siècle. Au XIe siècle des moines chassés de leurs temples s?installèrent sur ?les colonnes du ciel? mais ce n?est qu?au XIVe siècle que les premiers monastères furent construits. La vie monastique fut florissante au cours des siècles qui suivirent. Plus de vingt monastères furent érigés et une communauté monastique autonome s?y établit. Jusqu?au milieu du XVIIIe siècle les monastères des Météoresservirent de centres d?éducation de lettres et d?art.Sur les vingt-quatre monastères initiaux seuls six sont encore en activité actuellement dont quatre sont ouverts au public. En raison de l?amélioration des infrastructures et de la forte affluence touristique peu de jeunes moines souhaitent s?y établir. La plupart trouvent refuge dans le silence des monastères du mont Athos inaccessibles aux touristes.Kevin Houben s?est inspiré de ces lieux pour composer Valley of the Pinios (La vallée du Pinios) une œuvre de commande pour le Brass Band de Retie en Belgique. On y entend presque le vent tourbillonner autour des rochers de craie. Il émane une atmosphère sacrée des monastères des prières et de la solitude? La vallée majestueuse révèle toute la splendeur de la nature.

from the ballet 'Solitaire'. Par ARNOLD MALCOLM / SPARKE PHILIP (Arr.). En 1956, Sir Kenneth MacMillan créa un ballet en un acte pour le ballet du théâtre de Sadler?s Wells, à Londres. Il sélectionna la musique de plusieurs des English Dances (Danses anglaises) que Sir Malcolm Arnold avait composées en 1950 et 1951 et avaient été fort bien reçues. Le compositeur écrivit deux nouvelles danses, une Sarabande et une Polka, spécialement pour le ballet, qui fut créé au théâtre de Sadler?s Wells en juin 1956. Malcolm Arnold's ballet Sweeney Todd was first staged in 1959 by The Royal Ballet Company with choreography by John Cranko. The music was later adapted as a concert work and it is from this version that this brass band arrangement is made. The original concert suite lasts some 20 minutes but this version has been shortened to a more manageable eight minutes. The first performance of this arrangement was given on the 22nd October 2006 at the Malcolm Arnold Festival Derngate Northampton by the Rushden Windmill Band conducted by Richard Graves.
