It only became apparent a few years ago that the text of the soprano cantata Falsche Welt, dir trau ich nicht came from the collection Gott-geheiligten Sabbaths-Zehnden by the Leipzig theology student and Bach pupil Christoph Birkmann, printed in 1728 in Nuremberg. Birkmann was probably therefore the author of the text. The cantata was written for the 23rd Sunday after Trinity, which fell on 24 November 1726 in the year of its first performance. As in other cantatas in the first annual cycle, Bach chose an instrumental sinfonia as the opening movement - here the first movement of the 1st Brandenburg Concerto. The soprano soloist has two recitatives and two arias, in which the falsehood of the world is juxtaposed with trust in God. The cantata text is rounded off with the first verse of the chorale In dich hab ich gehoffet, scored for four-part chorus, as is usual with Bach. With the use of two horns and three oboes added to the string ensemble, the cantata has colorful and varied orchestration. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3105200.

Commissioned by the Maryknoll Community to celebrate its centenary of papal approval in 2011, Missa ad Gentes was composed with a particular vision – to create a Mass setting with the 2010 revised English texts representing both Maryknoll’s United States heritage as well as the diverse cultures in which Maryknoll missioners serve in Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.  With each piece of the Mass, Fr. Joncas honors the musical heritage of a different culture, creating a truly unique setting celebrating the Church’s diversity. The title, meaning “Mass ‘to the peoples’†draws on the text of the Second Vatican Council’s document on missionary activities. “It is my hope that the Missa ad Gentes will assist English-speaking Roman Rite Catholics to worship with new liturgical texts, faithful to their heritage but enriched by the great diversity of languages and cultures that make up the Church Catholic.†-Michael Joncas.

The cantata Erforsche mich Gott und erfahre mein Herz BWV 136 was composed in Bach's first year as Kantor of St. Thomas's in Leipzig and was first performed on the 8th Sunday after Trinity, the 18th July 1723. The librettist is unknown. The title of the cantata is taken from verse 23 of Psalm 139: Erforsche mich Gott und erfahre mein Herz; prufe mich und erfahre, wie ich's meine. (Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts) The opening chorus forms an extended fugue, framed by string writing bursting with energy. The obbligato horn accentuates and enriches the movement with a special tonal color. The alto aria in F sharp minor (movement 3) comprises a trio movement with an oboe d'amore as solo instrument in a contrasting range - a presto middle section which dramatically charges the words Denn seines Eifers Grimm vernichtet (For the fury of its zeal will destroy). In the duet (movement 5) the text is sung by tenor and bass line by line, sometimes imitating contrapuntally, and sometimes both singing together dramatically in homophonic writing. A simple chorale setting to the melody Auf meinen lieben Gott concludes the cantata. Particularly charming here is the violin which joins the four vocal parts as an independent part. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3113600.

In honor of the 200th anniversary of St. Rose Philippine Duschene’s arrival in New Orleans, Michael Joncas was commissioned to write a new mass setting by the Religious of the Sacred Heart. This edition is scored for SATB voices and features instrumental parts for complete symphony orchestra. Parts may be used according to the players available in your circumstance. The mass includes optional phrases in French and Potawatomi honoring the American saint’s heritage and ministry. The mass may be sung in unison, reserving the choral and instrumental parts for holy days. While some contemporary musical settings of the “Glory to God†seem burdensome and even awkward, Joncas’s melody is absolutely delightful. The singable through-composed Gloria boasts a magnificent and manageable modulation that contributes to the triumphant nature of the piece. After breaking off the annual cantata cycle at the end of March 1725 Bach set a series of cantata texts by the Leipzig poet Christiana Mariana von Ziegler, who maintained one of the first literary-musical salons. The large scale chorale chorus ties this work to the chorale cantatas. The central bass aria Auf,auf, mit hellem Schall with solo trumpet is note-worthy since in place of a middle section in the aria, here Bach employs an accompagnato recitative. The cantata Ihr Menschen, ruhmet Gottes Liebe (You mortals, tell of God's devotion) BWV 167 is one of the first works which Bach wrote in his capacity as Kantor of St. Thomas's Leipzig. It was composed for the Feast of St John, and was performed for the first time on 24 June 1723 in Leipzig. This concise and lively cantata is scored for four vocal soloists and modest instrumental forces; only the final chorale Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren is for all four vocal parts and the use of strings, with the soprano reinforced by a slide trumpet. The text is partly drawn verbatim from Zacharias's hymn of praise in St Luke's Gospel chapter 1. It praises God's grace and love, as fulfilled by his promise of salvation through Jesus for which John has prepared the way and the path. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3116700.

The break Bach's works in connection with the reperformance of the St. Matthew Passion led to a series of cantatas based on well-known chorale melodies for choir, instruments, and sometimes also for soloists.
