Carus 70.301/10, which is part of the material associated with this piece, can be used as the choral score. Gabriel Faure composed the Cantique de Jean Racine in 1865, the prizewinning work for the completion of his musical training. The composer expanded the original scoring for choir and organ by adding a string accompaniment; the version with orchestra was first performed in 1906. As a text Faure chose a French adaptation by Jean Racine of the Latin hymn Consors paterni luminis. The Cantique already displays the characteristics of an expressive choral setting typical for Faure, as well as the finely worked out orchestral accompaniment, and together with the Requiem, composed considerably later, it is among the most popular works of the composer. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.7030300.

Franz Schubert's Mass in G major is one of the most popular settings of the mass ordinary: the charming song-like melodic writing, especially in the Kyrie and the Credo, forms a magical counterpoint to more concertante passages in the Gloria and the Sanctus. For a long time it was thought that Schubert's final version was scored for purely string orchestra, whilst a version with wind, brass, and timpani was thought to be an expanded orchestration by his brother Ferdinand Schubert. However, since the mid-1990s it has been known that the parts for trumpets and timpani were additionally composed by Franz Schubert himself for use ad libitum. The present edition offers this Klosterneuburg Version - with trumpets and timpani ad libitum, but without Ferdinand's wind parts - in an Urtext edition reflecting Schubert's own intended orchestration. This work is available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.4067500.

With its traditional forms and proven compositional models, its original ideas, which are sometimes marked by a folk- or folksong-like melodic character, and with its harmonic richness, Dvorak's D major Mass serves in its liturgical context to express the worship of God. The Mass is characterized by lyrical meditation rather than by dramatic immediacy. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4065300.

The Stabat Mater is the last work composed by Giuseppe Verdi. He completed it in 1897 at the age of 84. One year later it was published with the somewhat earlier Te Deum as part of the Quattro pezzi sacri. Verdi set Mary's meditation in the face of her crucified son, a classic of Medieval Latin poetry, in an operatically expressive style for choir and large orchestra. Verdi's Stabat Mater is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Also available in the series Choir & organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2729400.

The cantata Es ist euch gut, dass ich hingehe [It is well that I go forth] BWV 108 for Cantate Sunday is one of the cantatas composed on texts by the Leipzig poetess Christiane Mariane von Ziegler with which Bach concluded his second annual cycle of cantatas after he had abandoned the annual cycle of chorale cantatas at Easter 1725. The text contains two sayings by Jesus which are taken directly from the Sunday gospel reading (John 16:5-15). The quotation opening the cantata was set by Bach as a bass aria with solo oboe d'amore; it breathes tranquility and assurance. The second quotation, however, is set as an extended choral fugue in three sections; it forms the center of the cantata. The free text surrounding the biblical quotations is divided into two arias in which the emphasis is on melodic lines; there is only one single recitative, the original text of which was substantially abridged by Bach. A four-part chorale concludes the cantata. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3110800.

Among Verdi's many compositions, as a work of sacred music, the Requiem remains unique. It was composed as a musical memorial for the Italian national poet Allessandro Manzoni, deeply admired by Verdi, and was first performed on the first anniversary of his death on 22 May 1874 in Milan Cathedral. The exploration of many extremes places Verdi's tonal language with musical means wholly in the service of a dramatized liturgy. The edition is based on the autograph as the primary source and makes accessible one of the most important requiem settings of the 19th century in a modern scholarly edition. In addition to the musical text the score contains a detailed foreword in three languages, a critical report with information on the source situation, the edition and the various readings. The complete performance material will be available for sale. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.2730300.

He who seeks a moving and lyrical work with rewarding roles for the choir could do no better than to choose Rheinberger's Stern von Bethlehem. In nine scenes (Expectation, The shepherds, The appearance of the angels, The Star, etc.) the Christmas story is lyrically portrayed. Songlike and pastoral choruses, a heartfelt soprano part and finally, the exotic, charming procession of the Wisemen through the desert have insured this work an increasing popularity. It was written in 1890 to a libretto by Rheinberger's wife Fanny. On account of their similar scoring, this work can be easily combined for a performance with Mendelssohn's Vom Himmel hoch or Die Geburt Christi. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5016400.
