He does not know Jesus but feels tremendous grief and loss at the death of this “stranger.”Scientists and philosophers have said that children frequently understand what adults cannot and “Within the Shadow of the Cross” the little boy discovers that God is there; God IS. Love me sweet was composed for the occasion of the composer’s wedding in July 2010. The text consists of four verses taken from Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s ironic poem A Man’s Requirements which ends with the couplet ‘I will love thee half a year As a man is able.’ This setting responds to the purer sentiments of the earlier verses employing a lilting metre a harmonic idiom and a piquant sprinkling of dissonance. Composer David Brunner has a gift for setting texts in melodic phrases with gentle contours and with a lyrical style. He has done exactly that with this text by Victorian age poet and essayist Bessie Rayner Parkes. Parkes was a prominent English feminist and campaigner for women's rights who found music everywhere - in birds, flowers, winds and waves - but mostly in earnest human voices raised in charity and for the cause of truth.
