I try to design my own choral music primarily for use in worship where the measure of the success of the piece is if it helps guide the listeners? ears upwards and elsewhere as sacred architecture and the various rituals of the church themselves are meant to do. The specificity of music heard only in certain seasons is for me an important and thrilling element of the choral tradition: a Beethoven Symphony is welcome at any point in the year but an anthem for Candlemas works only then at a certain time of day and on a certain day of the year. With this functional spirit at the heart of the compositional process I hope that the music collected here makes equal sense in a concert setting. Brahms's deeply moving Alto Rhapsody is one of the glories of the choral repertoire. Though it was written as a wedding song for the daughter of his friend Clara Schumann, the work clearly seems a deeply personal one for Brahms. Perhaps, as some have suggested, a melancholy reflection on his own solitary life. This great concert favorite is based on portions of the text of Goethe's Harzreise im Winter (Winter Journey in the Harz Mountains), and set for alto solo, men's chorus, and orchestra. In addition to the Alto Rhapsody, this volume contains three other major Brahms choral works: the Song of Destiny, a setting of a poem by Hölderlin: Nänie, a dirge for Brahms's friend Anselm Feuerbach, set to a text by Schiller: and Song of the Fates, set to passages from Act IV of Goethe's Iphigenie auf Tauris. Hail! Smiling Morn (Roud Index No 1346) was written by Reginald Spofforth in 1810. It has been described as the ?most popular glee in the entire repertoire? and remains a much loved concert item amongamateur choral groups all over the English-speaking world. It is presented here for SATB choir with a Piano reduction for accompaniment purposes. Reginald Spofforth (1769-1827) was a British composer organist andteacher. He wrote several dozen songs glees and hymns but no instrumental music. His music was performed at Covent Garden and successfully published during his lifetime but most of it has now been lost. Hail! SmilingMorn is undoubtedly his best known work.

Four American Choruses was commissioned by Simon Halsey and the City Of Birmingham Symphony Chorus who gave the premiere of I'm A Pilgrim the first of the four choruses on 31st January 2004 in Symphony Hall Birmingham. The complete set was premiered by the Netherlands Radio Choir conducted by Simon Halsey in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam on the 24th April 2004. The UK premiere of he entire set was again given by Simon Halsey and the City Of Birmingham Symphony Chorus on the 26th May 2005.
