Par CURTIS MIKE. Bulgarian Bat Bite was written in 2003 as a commission by the Quartetto Italiano di Clarinetti. It is an adaption and expansion of the composer´s 1992 duet, Khyberian Catfit, which is included in his 10 Klezmer Duos, published by Advance Music of Germany. The Duo‘s name referred to the antics of the family cat, Khyber, without alluding to the Balkan influences upon the composers following a summer, 1992, klezmer tour to Eastern Europe. The name “Bulgarian Bat Bite” properly conveys the influence. Composed by Pierre-Max Dubois  Quartuor is a really energetic and melodious piece for four Bb Clarinets. Lasting approximately 10 minutes it is divided into four distinct parts: 1. Allegretto 2. Allegro 3. Pastorale and 4. Musette. During the whole piece the Clarinets complete each other’s part on this fast work. The first part has a repetitive theme with some variations while the second one seems to be playing more on the aspects of the low and high ranges. The “Pastorale” section is slower and slightly less cheerful. The piece ends on the “Musette” which brings back some energybefore the end. This piece would be perfect to play during a concert or a recital. Pierre Max Dubois (1930-1995) was a French composer who was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1955. Mainly composing classical music his works are mainly for woodwinds. He is one of the founder of the Les Six and which included his professor Darius Milhaud.

Schwarz has a composed a work that describes an imaginary dinner of great classical masters on a cloud in the sky. Guess which composers are present by the references in the form of musical quotations and stylistic devices! 3. SCHERZO FOR CLARINET QUARTET: The work, in 12/8 time, moves in a rapid furioso. Underscored by a continues eighth note rhythm, the work creates in the listener the sensation of a frantic rollercoaster ride. The theme moves throughout all the parts and, following a chromatically moving chord sequence, ends in a dramatic crescendo.
