Gabriel Pierne (1863-1937) was a French composer, conductor and organist. Despite being predominantly remembered as a conductor, his Canzonetta remains a recognised piece in the Clarinet repertoire. Pierne studied at the Paris Conservatoire before taking up the position of chief conductor for the concert series, Concerts Colonne in 1910. He remained in the post until 1933, and during this time, he notably conducted the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird. Pierne composed for a variety of instruments, Canzonetta for Clarinet with Piano accompaniment being one of four solo works by the composer. This Pierne piece for Clarinet contains many characteristics typical of the French style, such as lyrical melodies, a significant number of performance directions, flourishes of semiquavers, chromaticism and many changes in dynamics. “Gabriel Grovlez (1879-1944) studied under Gabriel Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire. His compositions proved to be extremely versatile, from Operas and Ballets to solo works. Grovlez's Sarabande and Allegro is a sublime addition to the Clarinet repertoire. Much of the composer's works show neo-classical features, which is also the case in Sarabande and Allegro. Where the texture is predominantly melody dominated homophony, perfect cadences are frequently heard and modulations to related keys occur. Grovlez's C minor Sarabande is in a steady, triple meter, superbly contrasted by the fast Allegro, composed in the relative major. All these features make for an enjoyable and delightful performance!&rdquo.

This edition is enriched with a historical introduction in French and English by notable clarinettist Pierre Génisson. “[...] this piece is, without a doubt, one of the sweetest I have ever written.†As this letter that Claude Debussy wrote to Durand, his publisher, indicates, the composer held his Rhapsodie for clarinet and piano in very high regard. In 1909, when Gabriel Fauré, then director of the Paris Conservatoire, commissioned the piece, Debussy had never before written for clarinet. He dedicated it to P. Mimart, “as a token of my regard.†After the unanimous recognition of the high quality of this solo, written for competition, Mimart premiered it in public on 16 January 1911 at the Salle Gaveau in Paris. Two years later, Debussy would choose to expand it further, writing a version accompanied by orchestra with a greatly expanded palette of colors. As its name suggests, it is freeform, and emanates a great poetry. The introduction, “Rêveusement lent,†is an evocation of the dawn. This gives way to a scene of nature's awakening, which never ceases to amaze us with its transformations. At times calm and lyrical, it sometimes becomes mischievous, vindictive or even joyous, especially during the scherzando passages. In a heightened impressionist style, Debussy gives free rein to his imagination, demanding tremendous speed and precision from the clarinettist.

ââ¬ÅAndré Messager (1853-1929) composed Solo de Concours for Clarinet in 1899, as a Paris Conservatoire Contest piece. Composed in three sections, the cheerful first part contains triplet figures by the Clarinet that can easily be heard over the Orchestra. The second part has a strong French melody that can be heard as an exchange between the Clarinet and the Orchestra. A cadenza followed by trills ends this section and leads to the final part, where the Clarinet stands out from the Orchestra, with a rich melodic energy. André Messager is a previous student of Gabriel Fauré and Camille Saint-Saëns who wrote numerous operas, operettas and ballets. He was later appointed Commander of the Legion d?Honneur.ââ¬Â.
