Wald for Ensemble was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2008-09. Co-commission by the Schönberg Ensemble and BBC for Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.Programme NoteWald is in a way a series of variations from the beginning of my woodwind quintet Walden (1978). This thematical idea is very simple - a rising call of a fourth and the response in other voices. This idea is repeated several times but because the call has a slower pulse than the responses the process leads to them changing order.In Walden I borrowed the title from the Americanphilosopher Henry David Thoreau who in the middle of the eighteenth century in a little wooden hermit house at the bank of the lake Walden pond wrote the book Walden of his life and time in the forests. Here he experimented living for two years in order to come closer to nature and to see if it was possible to live simply without all the unnecessary needs created by society. The book is filled with poetry but is also cutting and critical of society. In my piece Walden I tried to search for the same simplicity handling the most simple material but at the same time trying not to lose the poetry.Wald is a twin piece to Walden but also to my former piece Schnee.Robert Schumann wrote in 1848-49 a wonderful piano piece Waldszenen. He wrote this collection of short pieces with beautiful titles like Einsame Blumen Vogel als Prophet and also Jäger auf der Lauer just a few years before Thoreau wrote his book Walden. For them the forest is the magical romantic place that gives a spiritual insight to man but also from where we get our food through hunting. For me the forest still has this magical quality and Wald has scenes with a hunting horn that calls (I many years ago played the magical 'Waldhorn' and remember playing in the forest near my home) flocks of birds that when agitated take

Premiered at the 2005 Michigan Music Educaotrs Conference Escapades was commissioned by the Grand Valley State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble under the baton of Barry D. Martin with Arthur Campbell as clarinet soloist. Since the premiere it has been scheduled for additional performances in the United States and abroad. The piece gets its inspiration from the title which can be defined as 'a usually adventurous action that runs counter to approved or conventional conduct.' This piece is a series of changing 'escapades' (or variations) which develop and explore different aspects of the opening thematic material. The entire work builds into a free improvisational section beforeall elements of are united in the final presto of the composition (10:00)

This fast swing chart from Rob Vuono features melodic and harmonic writing at its best. Even at this grade level Rob has provided suggested voicings for the rhythm section. Tenor sax has an optional written solo before a sax soli. An a cappella section is ideal to work on the timing of the horns without rhythm before a vamp kicks in building to the end. Great writing!

This easy swing ballad pays homage to the great Neal Hefti and his classic Li’l Darlin’ which was written for the Count Basie orchestra and is now standard repertoire in the big band genre. There is plenty of ensemble work along with a great written tenor sax solo (also with chord symbols). Composed and published 2015.Walled Garden for String and Flute trios is a set of three pieces designed to be interleaved with Mala punica a sequence of canons for eight-voiced vocal ensemble written in 2008-9.Commissioned by Spitalfields Music and first performed with Mala punica at Spitalfields Music Summer Festival on 3rd June 2015 by Daniel Pioro (Violin) Robert Ames (Viola) Oliver Coates (Cello) Jane Mitchell and Rebecca Larsen (Alto Flutes) and Helen Keen (Bass Flute).Duration: c. 24 minutes.

Sinfonia Comatica is a composition by Judith Weir which is scored for flexible ensemble meaning music directors are able to make use of a variety of instruments tailoring the parts to their choseninstrumentation. A truly innovative idea this piece lasts around 1 and a half minutes and includes the Score and Parts. Originally commissioned by Contemporary Music for All (CoMA) it was also premiered bythem on the 25th of October 2014 at St John's Smith Square in London. As for the scoring a chart is included which detailed the range of each part and suggested instruments but the list can be expanded creatively to produceinnovative and unique performances of this work.

Teach or perform this cha-cha style original with limited range and technical demands using little rehearsal time. Top note for the lead trumpet is only a third space C and a D for the lead bone. Playable with only five brass. Highly recommended for beginning and developing ensembles.

The spiritual Joshua Fit de Battle of Jericho gets transported to the '40s big band era using the rhythmic feel and famous ostinato from Benny Goodman's Sing Sing Sing. With just a little rehearsal time this straight-forward arrangement will bring down the house!

Rachel Steckler O'Kaine has written out the optional conga and sekere parts to aid your percussionist in creating Afro-Cuban rhythms as easily as possible. Check out the performance notes for specific notation used in the conga part. This is an extremely well-written chart worthy of your highest festival or contest considerations. Great material for better bands.

Featuring a Basie-style piano part that's written out on the opening chorus this blues settles into a very nice groove with the saxes featured much of the time. None of the parts are overly demanding and the ranges are very comfortable. An excellent blues recipe!
