This edition gives the ‘original’ orchestration of 2 Oboes (though both play together doubling the soprano chorus line) Bassoon (continuo) 2 Trumpets (parts are given in D and Bb and are shown in the score at concert pitch) Timpani strings and SATB chorus. However additional parts are included for Flutes Clarinets in Bb Horns and Trombones which double the chorus lines and can be used either to reinforce the choral line or to replace it completely to provide an orchestra-only concert version. One chorus part is included in the orchestral set and additional copies areavailable should they be required. Commissioned by the University of Sussex to celebrate their Silver Jubilee in 1986 God is Our Refuge sets Psalm 46 and is one of Harvey’s easier choral works offering all choirs an ideal introduction to his choral writing.

Richard Rodney Bennet’s Symphony No. 3 commissioned for the 1987 Three Choirs Festival by the Elgar Foundation with additional funds from West Midlands Arts is now published in a facsimile study score.In contrast with his first two symphonies which were rather extrovert display pieces Symphony No. 3 is quite thoughtful and lyrical in nature more or less monothematic and has a strong feeling of tonality particularly at the opening and closing of the score. The more moderate orchestration (2 Flutes Oboe Cor Anglais 2 Clarinets in B flat Bassoon 2 Horns in F Percussion 1 (small Triangle Tam-tam 3 suspendedCymbals) Percussion 2 (side Drum tubular Bells) Timpani Piano Harp and Strings) also reflects this. Performance time of the three movements is ca. 22 minutes.Sir Richard Rodney Bennett was an English composer of film TV and concert music and also a jazz pianist. He was based in New York City from 1979 until his death there in 2012.

Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 is a work which has both fascinated and perplexed musicologists and performers for many years. It forms by far the larger part of the composer's first significant publication of sacred music entitled: 'Of the most blessed virgin a Mass for six voices for church choirs and Vespers for more voices with several sacred concertos suitable for princely chapels or apartments'. By the time this publication appeared Monteverdi had been in the service of the Gonzaga court at Mantua for at least 18 years and he was seeking a change of employment so that the dedication of the volume to the reigning pope Paul V may be interpreted as a form ofself-advertisement. Originally issued as an Urtext study score the edition is based closely on the extant printed source the set of partbooks published at Venice in 1610 and retains the original note values key and mensuration signatures.
