Galánta is a small Hungarian market-town known by the travellers from Vienna to Budapest. The composer has passed through there many times during his childhood at the time there existed a famous Gipsy-band which has disappeared since their music was the first 'orchestral sonority' which came to the ear of the composer. The forbearers of these gipsies were known already more than a hundred years ago about 1800 some books of Hungarian dances were published in Vienna one of which contained music 'after several gipsies from Galantha'. Sports et Divertissements, composé autour de 1913, est un cycle fantaisiste pour piano, composé de plusieurs pièces quasi improvisées relatant avec humour et esprit 'cubiste' diverses préoccupations - disons - assez futiles comme la pêche, le carnaval, le yachting, la balançoire, le bain de mer, colin-maillard ou le flirt. M'étant penché un temps sur la manière d'orchestrer la musique de Satie avec son oeuvre Parade (penché mais pas trop tout de même), j'ai ensuite pensé à Ravel et ses Tableaux d'une exposition, mais aussi au jeune Stravinsky, à Jeux de Debussy où l'on parle également de flirt et de tennis. Puis j'ai retrouvé mes manières d'orchestrer, en évitant par exemple de rendre le Choral inappétissant de Satie aussi inappétissant que le Choral de Parade, le rendant d'avantage magique et touchant: un hommage au caractère de Satie, un homme éminemment affable et bienveillant envers son entourage et les enfants d'Arceuil. En revanche, le traitement de la percussion est respectueusement très satien, s'inspirant des petites textes glissés par le compositeur dans la partition pour piano (j'ai surréalistement opté pour un éoliphone, un vibraslap, un machine à écrire modèle Underwood, des crécelles, une flûte à coulisse, un flexatone, un appeau 'rossignol'...). Donc bruit de moulinet de la canne à pêche, des talons en dansant le Tango, bruissement de la Balançoire, présence menaçante du vent au grand large dans Le Yachting, ou encore sifflet pour Le Réveil de la Mariée... With the ?Concerto for Orchestra ? Henle inaugurates a series of affordable study scores based on the text of the Bartók Complete Edition. When Bartók received the commission to compose this piece from Serge Koussevitsky in May 1943 it meant not only financial support but also an important creative impetus for the gravely ill composer. By October the five-movement concerto which Koussevitsky enthusiastically dubbed ?the best orchestral work of the last 25 years ? was already complete. The first performances in the winter of 1944 45 were also very successful. Nevertheless Bartók was moved to set down an alternate ending which thecomposer who passed away in September 1945 would never be destined to hear. Bartók specialist Klára Móricz includes both versions in her edition and summarises the history and transmission of the ?Concerto for Orchestra? in a fascinating foreword. A brief commentary section provides information about the principles underlying the edition.

Adam Falckenhagen (1697 - 1754) was a German lutenist and composer of the late Baroque period travelling from court to court throughout his life eventually settling in Bayreuth. It was there that he won the favour of Wilhelmine of Prussia Margravine of Bayreuth a lutenist herself and the sister of Frederick the Great. He composed a variety of music for lute including this Concerto in F Major in three movements: Allegro Andante and Vivace. In this edition Victor Van Puijenbroeck has created a piano reduction of the orchestral score and also has adapted the lute part to be played on guitar. Included are parts for both lute (the part has been adapted from lute tablature tomodern notation) and guitar (capotasto). Par PEREZ-RAMIREZ MARCO-ANTONIO. Le titre de cette nouvelle pièce s'est imposé tout naturellement au moment où je lisais cette phrase d'Antonin Artaud 'Du corps, par le corps, depuis le corps, avec le corps et jusqu'au corps'. J'avais déjà commencé à écrire cette pièce pour orchestre, je cherchais des aspérités, des volumes antagonistes, des sons âpres, rauques, une forme sans concession, des accélérations et ralentissements du matériau, je voulais dévier, dériver, m'enfoncer, repartir, déraper, foncer, revenir... J'éprouvais des sensations tactiles très fortes au moment de l'écriture, des sensations de contact direct, immédiat, physique. J'essayais de laisser une trace dans l'espace. Un peu comme dans les tableaux d'Antoni Tapiès avec ces graffitis ou éraflures, '...comme si une mémoire avait pu reprendre corps à partir de ces surfaces graveleuses...' (Jorge Semprun). Aujourd'hui plus j'avance dans mon travail et plus cette idée du corps, devient présente dans ma musique. Ecrire de la musique est devenu une expérience du corps tout entier. Un corps qui est pensée, connaissance et sensations. Tout ce que j'écris passe par mon corps. Je mime, chantonne, ronronne ma musique. Je me lève, me rassois, tourne autour de ma table pour calmer ma main et ma tête qui parfois vont trop vite. Par ce contact direct, physique, j'essaye que ma musique garde en mémoire le geste qui la fait naître. Au-delà de cette 'physicalité', les réflexions sur le corps m'ont permis de faire le lien avec ces idées chères à Bergson sur le Temps, la durée réelle, sur l'Instinct et l'Intuition. Toutes ces notions se croisent dans mon esprit, se mélangent dans ma musique, et plus particulièrement dans cette nouvelle pièce. Du Corps... est dédiée à René Koering, car c'est après avoir entendu le final, extrêmement étrange, de son 3e quatuor à cordes que j'ai eu envie d'écrire les premières mesures de cette pièce. Britten's Irish Reel was composed in 1936 as title music for a documentary film made by Marion Grierson and Evelyn Spice. Around the Village Green was made for the Travel and Industrial Development Association, which explored the changes to rural life in East Anglia after the increased mechanisation of agriculture. In his incidental music, Britten incorporated a riotous medley of folk songs and other traditional tunes (including 'Early One Morning', 'The Vocar of Bray', and Sheild's 'The Plough Boy'), many of which were suggested to him by the Norfolk-based composer E.J.Moeran.
