Romeo et Juliette Op. 17 Hol. 73: Symphonie dramatique For his third symphony ; Romeo et Juliette (1839) Berlioz turned to his greatest literary passion, Shakespeare, drawing once again on his own most fervent experiences. Berlioz's discovery of Shakespeare in 1827 had been overwhelming not only for the dramatic force of the poetry and drama, but also because the leading actress of the company, Harriet Smithson, immediately won his heart. She later became his wife. He began to think seriously about composing some kind of musical ; Romeo and Juliet but it was not realised until 1839. The symphony is scored for doublechorus (to represent the two warring families), solo voices as secondary characters, with the lovers themselves represented by the orchestra. Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. This study score of Franz Schubert 's complete string trios (Violin, Viola and Violoncello) takes its text from the New Schubert Edition. It also includes Schubert 's very first essay in the genre, which only resurfaced in 1997: the draft trio in B-flat major, D 111A (1814). Besides this draft, two other trios in B-flat major written a short while later have come down to us: D 471 and D 581. The first is likewise a fragment as it breaks off in m. 39 of the second movement. D 581 survives in two versions, the first based on the autograph score, the second on a set of parts prepared and thoroughly revised by Schubert. Bach's original setting of the Magnificat in E-flat major written for Christmas vespers in 1723 includes four inserts, placed at the end of the score, to give a dramataic representation of the Nativity. Although the later D major version is most often performed today, this earlier E-flat major version stands on its own merits with many attractive features which disappeared with the downward transposition.
