Dramatic and lyrical by turns this work displays Rachmaninov's keyboard characteristics: intense Russian flavor rich and bold sonorities compelling rhythmic drive and brilliant virtuosity. Rachmaninov shows here a very fine grasp of the medium of two pianos his haunting sense of melody and his richly harmonic and rhythmic foundation. During his time Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.4 was continually dogged by criticism that it was work desperately seeking a style. Critics said the Fourth did not seem know where it was coming from or knew which way it was going. Concert goers who were swept away by the lyrical beauty of the Second and storming brilliance of the Third were expecting Rachmaninov's Fourth Concerto to have that similar emotional impact. Nevertheless there is a wonderful rhythmic tautness to this outstanding piece. The finale contains some of the Fourth's most attractive music. This particular work is a reduction for 2 pianos where the music's potency isn't compromised by it's lack ofan orchestra.

Rhapsody in F Sharp was commissioned by the BBC Proms and first performed in the Royal Albert Hall on August 19th 1943. Written for solo Piano with Orchestra accompaniment it has been arranged here for twoPianos. Written with the wartime audience in mind it is unashamedly popular in style with a flashy virtuosity making it immediately accessible and entertaining. There is argument among scholars as to whether it should bereferred to in the Major or Minor key as it makes almost equal use of both starting in one and finishing in the other. Ernest J Moeran (1894-1950) was an English composer who followed the tradition of R. VaughanWilliams and John Ireland by collecting preserving and using many folk songs mainly from Norfolk Suffolk and Ireland.

In January 1964 Bernd Alois Zimmermann interrupted the completion of his opera Die Soldaten [The Soldiers] in order to rearrange his orchestral work Dialoge for two pianos. Monologe resulting therefrom takes up the original material but develops it towards a different direction: Zimmermann‘s collage technique based on quotations extends over the entire musical setting so that it is not only Mozart (Piano Concerto in C major KV 467) who has his say but Beethoven, Messiaen and Bach as well. Sonata Movement (Grave & Presto) in B-flat major-Of Mozart's many fragmentary works it is the Requiem which stands out but there are many other fragments in his large compositional output which can ideally be used as a basis for a reconstruction. In the case of these two reconstructions for two pianos the editor has drawn on thematically suitable fragments from Mozart's piano solo repertoire and has arranged them for two pianos. In this way reconstructions are achieved which are based solely on authentic material. The result of this creative exercise is two new highly effective concert works for two pianos offering a valuable addition to Mozart's two existing works for this combination. The editor tookAbbé Maximilian Stadler's sensitive reconstruction of Mozart's fragmentary Larghetto and Allegro in E-flat major for two pianos (K. deest) as a model for his reconstructions.

The result was one of Ravel’s most thrilling compositions and for Wittgenstein the most important of the many works he commissioned over the course of his career.This scholarly-critical edition of Ravel’s Piano Concerto For The Left Hand is based on previously inaccessible and unknown sources. The editor Douglas Woodfull-Harris was able to consult manuscripts in the private library of the Paul Wittgenstein Estate which allowed him to retrace the work’s evolutionfrom Ravel’s autograph working copy to the first printed edition.A source of key importance to our new edition is a handwritten French copy of Ravel’s own Piano reduction (the autograph is inaccessible) that he gave to Wittgenstein to facilitate rehearsing the work. The Prelude Hymn And Toccata 1987 is dedicated to and was commissioned by the Nettle-Markham Piano Duo. It was the second work to have been written for them by the composer the first being the Sonata For Piano Duet Op.92. This twenty minute work begins with Leighton's typical preludial double-dotted rhythms and contrapuntal textures; it develops into dark passionate music and erupts into single and double cadenzas. The gentle Hymn is ushered in quietly and unfolds in long rhapsodic sections building up to more climactic cadenzas before dissolving gradually to an ethereal conclusion. The Toccata finale shows Leighton's masterly piano writing andcontrasts biting rhythmic motifs with sweeping yearning elegiac phrases.

There were two reasons behind Weber?s hesitation to perform his opus 79 known as 'Concert Piece' in public. As he wrote to the music journalist Friedrich Rochlitz experience had shown that concertos in minor keys were not aswell-received by the public. Furthermore he was worried that he would be misjudged as a 'musical charlatan' because while composing it he had had visions of a dramatic love story at the time of the crusades which had influencedthe character of the work. His concerns were superfluous; the effective virtuoso piece conquered the concert stages all over the world. It is now available for the first time as an Urtext edition.
