Par WHITBOURN JAMES. This glorious collection of beautiful choral music by composer James Whitbourn includes fifteen short works drawn from his oeuvre from the first few years of the 21st century. Many of his greatest compositions are included in The Choral Collection, with many of the pieces working perfectly for seasonal performances, while also reflecting the many fruitful collaborations of Whitbourn's distinguished career. All works are arranged for SATB Choir. James Whitbourn has become renowned throughout the world for his acclaimed compositions and settings of numerous texts. He has been described as truly original and an innovator of contemporary British choral music, collaborating with people like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. The former appears here, as A Prayer Of Desmond Tutu, a setting of one of the Archbishop's prayers. His arrangements and compositions for the King's College Choir have been universally critically acclaimed, with A Great And Mighty Wonder, Nunc Dimittis and Were You There? representing these hugely popular collaborations. Whitbourn has also had a very close relationship with the BBC since his beginnings as a composer, working with them on three pieces within The Choral Collection. Eternal Rest and Give Us The Wings Of Faith were both composed specifically for television broadcast, the former (in its orchestral form) was played for the funeral of the Queen Mother in 2002. His longest work, for which he is most famous, is a setting of text from'the Diary of Anne Frank'. There Is No Speech Or Language comes from this work, taking its text from other sources, but that still maintain the beauty and tragedy of the wider piece. The Choral Collection of fifteen compositions by James Whitbourn is full of beautiful, haunting, uplifting and inspiring melodies for SATB Choir and Organ Accompaniment from one of the most treasured British choral composers. The brilliant choice of texts throughout is matched only by the sheer compositional skill of Whitbourn in evoking the emotions of the words in the musical form. Also included are suggestions for seasonal song use, a list of recordings, and fascinating song notes written by Whitbourn himself. The joy of choral singing is nowhere more evident than in a work by James Whitbourn, and performances of any piece within this collection is sure to be remembered for a long time to come./ Recueil / Choeur Mixte (SATB) et Orgue

Benjamin Britten: Te Deum In C: SATB: Score

[Sheet music]
Chester
In preparing for publication the 1935 orchestral version of Britten's Te Deum in...
(+)
In preparing for publication the 1935 orchestral version of Britten's Te Deum in C it became clear that there were a number of discrepancies between the manuscript and the original 193 vocal score. Some of these were minor:different articulation and dynamic markings something Britten was later very fussy about but perhaps left unchanged on proof because of his relative inexperience at this stage of his career with the processes of musicpublishing. Others were more important: wrong pedal notes for example which Britten failed to notice on proof and which have been perpetuated in performances and recordings for nearly seventy years. These have been corrected inthe new edition of the vocal score and in the orchestral score (Britten clearly used the published vocal score to prepare his orchestral version). The two versions have been made consistent in other details - rehearsal cues andbar numbers for example - since Britten intended choristers to use the vocal score to perform the orchestral version. This would have been an easy task for these is little discrepancy in essential details between versions (arare departure occurs in bars 53 to 56 where the works 'Lord God of Sabaoth' are unaccompanied in the orchestral version but doubled by Organ in the original). Sustained Organ chords are often filled out with arpeggiated stringwriting while the spacing of chords is frequently much wider in the string version with melodies transposed into different octaves. Although harmony in both versions is identical voice leading is sometimes altered in the latterto make it better suited to the idioms of the instruments concerned. So although in essence the two versions are the same the soundworld explored in each is quite distinct. Britten's orchestral version should neither beviewed as an occasional piece nor considered solely a liturgical work like many of his choral pieces from the 1930s and 1940s it is equally at home in church and concert hall.

John Tavener: The Fool (Chorus Part): Mixed Choir: Vocal Score

(+)
Composer's notes:The Fool is a time-honoured Orthodox religious figure: a Saint the highest of all who discards everything for Christ's sake. He discards all convention all decency all wealth actual and spiritual and turns himself into a figure of fun - defying all acceptable behaviour - and all religious decency. He stands in the square and lets down his trousers - he stuffs himself with food on Good Friday - he gets drunk - he 'appears'to fornicate wildly. There is a faint possibility (in not the highest of 'Fools') of gaining worldly popularity by such flagrant denial of all moral behaviour. Can such behaviour be too interesting? The true fool however embraces all of this and also (unseen) shrinks before the face of his God. By his behaviour he plucks out all hypocrisy false piety and corruption. He is a figure much needed in our times!!! The way I have tried to tacklethis extraordinary subject is to show him in seven stages from an obscene huge fat traditional clown who is drunk fornicating etc. through a stumbling frail agonized figure to a sallow-faced gaunt business man in a formalsuit staring at an empty glass. Having first revered him then mocked him the 'people' while they get drunk and jabber away at 'Christmas' and at the Feast of Feasts 'Easter' are no longer aware of him. But the audience seeshim - a tiny ragged scrap of mortality lying in a corner and faintly so faintly the voice of the Fool the true Fool for Christ's sake sings above the ribald crowd. 'He has given His life'. The Gogmagogs are the 'people' 'priests' 'singers' etc. and one male singer who can 'create' or 'uncreate' this vast role (singing and acting miming etc.) John Tavener Arranged for SSATBB chorus. Date of composition 2000. Chorus part only.

(+)
This work for viola chorus and percussion was commissioned by the London Symphony Chorus and was first performed in October 1994 at the Barbican Hall London by Yuri Bashmet and the London Symphony Chorus conducted by StephenWestrop. The remarkable text of the Troparion written by the great Byzantine poetess-nun Cassiana was the inspiration of The Myrrh-Bearer. The text informed the architecture of the music. The viola solo represents MaryMagdalen as the cello solo represented the Mother of God on The Protecting Veil. This is where the resemblance between the two pieces ends.In The Myrrh-Bearer the Chorus symbolises ???us??? the ???sins of the world??? from???stylized dictatorships??? to ???the frivolous inane escapist vanities of the world ??? the to cries of ???help??? after the cosmic catastrophe and finally reaching an apocalyptic climax in the words ???We have no king by Caesar;??? adownright condemnation of God in the Earthly power. In a surreal way the Magdalen???s ???sin??? shines through in the viola music because she recognises the Godhead and the endless ???Kyrie eleison??? chanted by the semi-chorusrepresents her repentance and whatever is left of a ???repentant??? world. The Myrrh-Bearer explores the whole range of the viola climbing from the depths up to the highest notes and then falling again at the end after theMagdalen???s recognition of the Risen Christ ???Rabboni.???The last stroke of the gong in the viola???s final bottom C gives a deliberately ominous end to the piece. This is a special item which is made to order. (+)
'From the Beginning of the World was commissioned by the Cardinall’s Musick and premiered at Cadogan Hall on the 20th July 2015 in the first of the 2015 BBC Proms Chamber Music Concerts. The concert launched The Tallis Edition a new project by the ensemble with an aim to throw new light on Tallis’s work and part of the commission brief was that my new piece should be a homage to this great English polyphonist. I spent several weeks in libraries attempting to find a suitable text eventually settling on excerpts from Tycho Brahe’s German Treatise on the Great Comet of 1577. Whether Tallis knew about the comet is unknown of course but this seismic event to me seemed emblematic of all the great changes that occurred during his lifetime in areas such as religion the calendar and time-keeping (finding out that Tallis lived out his last days in Greenwich was an extra bonus). The text also seems to speak to contemporary times: whilst Brahe may have thought the comet’s birth would cause the sun to ‘bring unnatural heat’ nowadays we know that its ‘venom [will be] spewed over the lands’ due to mankind’s continued pillaging of the earth’s natural resources. Yet our political ‘pseudo prophets’ prefer to distract us with an austerity delusion rather than confront a reality perpetuated by certain corporations for whom ‘seek[ing] their own honour’ is of primary value. The music itself is very influenced by Tallis and canons and imitation abound. During my time as a ‘cellist at the Yehudi Menuhin School I performed Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis many times and so From the Beginning of the World which also uses Tallis’s Third Mode Melody from the English Hymnal is really a homage to both composers.' - Cheryl Frances-Hoad.

The Mamas and The Papas' hymn to the West Coast state California Dreamin ' was actually written in chilly New York City by John and Michelle Phillips before they even formed the band that made them famous. Simon and Garfunkel were New York through and through and Simon's jaunty song about the Queensboro Bridge - aka Feelin' Groovy - uses its local colloquial name. Skeeter Davis, born Mary Frances Penick, was the survivor of a car crash that killed her singing partner Betty Jack Davis. They had enjoyed some success as The Davis Sisters but The End Of The World was the biggest hit of Skeeter's subsequent solo career. In My Room saw The Beach Boys moving indoors from all that sun and sand and recording one of their most reflective and lovely songs. Meanwhile the British invasion was threatening the pop status quo in America and Can't Buy Me Love , from the film Hard Day's Night, gave The Beatles yet another number one in the US charts. Novello Choral Pops: Sixties Hits contains these five decade-defining hits, newly arranged for SATB Choir with Piano accompaniment. / Choeur Mixte (SATB) Et Piano

'Behold the Lamb' is a powerful, yet reverent description of the act of Holy Communion. Its writer, Keith Getty (along with Kristyn Getty and Stuart Townend), tells us that the first verse is meant to prepare us to receive, the second verse focuses on the bread, and the third verse, the wine. The final verse is the response of the faithful as we go out into the world, strengthened by the experience. Thoughtfully and sensitively arranged by Andy Albritton, alternate voicings, instrumental parts, as well as a fully-orchestrated accompaniment are available. / Choeur Mixte (SATB)

(+)
Music runs through the story of Arion which begins with a singing competition in Sicily. Arion wins the prize and this puts his life in danger: his newfound wealth excites the greed of the sailors who are supposed to be bringing him back to Corinth and they threaten to kill him. They allow Arion to sing one last song and the power of his singing attracts dolphins to the ship. At the end of his song he jumps overboard and one of the dolphins carries him to safety. So Arion’s musical gift gets him into trouble but it is also his salvation. The idea of being rescued by a music-loving dolphin is very appealing. In Robert Graves’account of the myth the dolphin could not bear to be parted from Arion and accompanied him back to court where “it soon succumbed to a life of luxury.” However Herodotus says that after his rescue and return to Corinth Arion failed to return the dolphin to the sea and it died there. Apollo placed the dolphin among the stars and next to it Arion’s lyre in recognition of his musical skill. This is one of the mythical explanations of the origins of the constellations Delphinus and Lyra. It seems natural to sing a story that has singing at its heart. When I was asked by the Nicholas Berwin Charitable Trust to write a choral work for Making Music something that would be within reach of many choirs and involve children this story struck me as ideal: the men of the chorus could be the bloodthirsty sailors and the women could create an atmosphere of mystery for the arrival of the dolphins represented by children’s voices. There would be one solo voice: Arion the marvellous singer. Andrew Fardell the conductor who was advisor to this commission had suggested that I might use the same instrumentation as a popular arrangement of Orff’s Carmina Burana a work that as well as using children’s chorus features a solo countertenor. I thought the magical otherworldly quality of this

Vocal Score Large Print-The story of the composition of Mozart's Requiem has a strange fabulous quality that is entirely typical of the events of his life. Whether we are considering his amazing exploits and achievements as a youthful virtuoso and maestro or the depth of his financial misfortunes in Vienna in the late 1780s there is little that is mundane about the main biographical facts. It comes as no surprise then to find that these facts have often been coloured and embroidered to enhance their emotional effect and to create a legend about this most remarkable musician. The simple story of the genesis of the Requiem is in itself striking - that in the last weeks of his lifeMozart was working on a Mass for the Dead that this work was the result of an anonymous commission and that the commissioner's envoy in order to avoid giving an address paid Mozart several unannounced visits like a messenger from another world - this story can easily be filled out with portents and hints of the supernatural.Even the account by Franz Niemetscheki (first published in 1798 based on information given by Mozart's widow Constanze and later receiving 'official' approval by being incorporated into the Mozart biography by Constanze's second husband Georg von Nissen) writes of the commissioner's agent appearing 'like a ghost' and Friedrich Rochlitz's account goes much further in suggesting that the composer was possessed by a demoniac and feverish desire to complete the Requiem and conscious of approaching doom

This anthem The Peace That Surpasseth Understanding by John Tavener was commissioned jointly by the Dean and Chapter of Westminster and the Ministry of Defence. It was first performed at a Service in Honourof the Passing of the World War One Generation in Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 11th November 2009 in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh by the Choir of Westminster Abbeyconducted by James O’Donnell. COMPOSER’S NOTEIn this setting of Saint Paul’s great statement I have tried in a simple and primordial manner to suggest majesty solemnity and a radiance of peace andbliss. I have also given the music a ceremonial nature by inserting ‘Allelouias’ sounding from ‘Heaven’ (semi-chorus) gradually rising in pitch until they are answered by ‘Allelouias’ from‘The World’ (main choir). The music forms a gradual crescendo reflecting the meaning of the words. At the musical and spiritual climax the full organ sounds four chords which represent The Four Angels beforethe Throne of God. The final chord then transforms into the sacred monosyllable OM which hums around the building representing the Peace and Beatitude of God’s Presence. Duration: c. 4 minutes

(+)
When the BBC commissioned this work for the Last Night of the Proms 2018 I was given quite a detailed brief. First the work should be for the BBC Singers and BBC Symphony Chorus (with the BBC Symphony Orchestra) and the two choirs should be quite independent of each other. Secondly the words should acknowledge the centenary of the end of World War I but look optimistically to the future. For the centenary I chose In the Underworld by World War I poet Isaac Rosenberg written in 1914. Originally about unrequited love it can read if you do not know its context as a prophetic look at the next four years with the sense that the women left at home cannot begin tocomprehend the horrors their men face in the trenches. The BBC Singers represent Rosenberg and their music is based on a beautiful Ashkenazi-Jewish prayer mode â?? also known as the â??Ukrainian Gypsyâ?? mode. While I was reading The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran (written in 1923) I came across these lines which seem to answer and assuage the fears expressed in Rosenbergâ??s poem. The BBC Symphony Chorus take on the role of Gibran singing in a beautiful melismatic Maronite Syriac chant into which faith Gibran was born in Lebanon. Later in his life he became very interested in Islam particularly Sufism; therefore the whole piece is in the form of a Sufi Zikr with Sufi devotional rhythms in the percussion starting quiet and low but slowly becoming higher faster and louder. The two choirs start separately but merge into a â??conversation â?? sometimes overlapping and ending on a positive note: Rosenbergâ??s Creature of light and happiness over Gibranâ??s We shall build a tower in the sky. Quite by accident all three Abrahamic faiths are represented in this piece â?? but as Kahlil Gibran famously said: â??You are my brother and I love you. I love you when you prostrate yourself in your mosque and kneel in your church and pray in your synagogue. You and I are sons of one faith â?? the Spirit.'

Par WEIR JUDITH. Celebrate HM The Queen's 90th Birthday with your choir Sing Judith Weir's special new choral piece I Love All Beauteous Things Master of the Queen's Music, Judith Weir, has been commissioned by St Paul's Cathedral in London to write a piece for SATB choir and organ in celebration of HM The Queen's 90th birthday in 2016. The piece is now available from Chester Music, so that choirs all over the world can join in with the festivities. Churches and other local organisations are planning events on Sunday 12th June and many may want to include this approachable setting of Robert Bridges' poem. Directed by Andrew Carwood, the St Paul's Cathedral Choir will perform I love all beauteous things as part of the National Service of Thanksgiving which will take place on at 11am on 10 June in the presence of HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. At the service the Archbishop of Canterbury will give the address and the Prime Minister will read a lesson. The event will be televised live on BBC1. Judith Weir comments: 'It is a particular honour to contribute new music for this great occasion, and a pleasure to write a choral version of Robert Bridges' beautiful verse.' Preview the score here Download the digital sheet music here COMPOSER'S NOTE At the suggestion of Michael Hampel, Precentor of St Paul's Cathedral, I have set words by Robert Bridges, who was Poet Laureate from 1913-1930. Bridges was an outstanding humanitarian and writer, whose poetry has inspired me before in The Voice of Desire, a song-cycle for mezzo-soprano and piano. This short, fast-tempo setting aims to emulate the swift, fleet-footed rhyme and metre of the two-verse poem, with its unobtrusive but telling reference to 'man in his hasty days'. J.W. Commissioned by the Chapter of St Paul's Cathedral to mark the 90th birthday of HM The Queen, generously supported by the Boltini Trust. Performed at the National Service of Thanksgiving for HM The Queen's birthday at St Paul's Cathedral, London, on Friday 10th June 2016 in the presence of HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. Music by Judith Weir, Master of the Queen's Music, words by Robert Bridges, Poet Laureate in the year HM The Queen was born. Duration c. 3½ minutes I LOVE ALL BEAUTEOUS THINGS words by Robert Bridges OM (1844-1930) Poet Laureate 1913-30 I love all beauteous things, I seek and adore them - God hath no better praise, And man in his hasty days Is honoured for them. I too will something make And joy in the making - Altho' to-morrow it seem Like the empty words of a dream Remembered on waking. For Flute (doubling Piccolo) Clarinet in B flat* Very large Tam-Tam (sounding from a high gallery) and Choir (SSATTBB).* Notated in C in the score. 'According to Hindu Cosmology welive at the end of a cycle the Kali Yuga the Dark Age. There are two important sayings of Christ that should accompany his disciples always during these challenging times. The first is ?The Gates of Hell shall not prevail against my Church? (Matthew 16 v. 18); and the second ?I am with you always unto the end of the world? (Matthew 28 v. 20). These sayings form the basis of this work which falls into two main sections each with the same structure and with linked material. Each section begins with Kali Yuga which I havetried to represent in a chaotic unstructured way in contrast to the cosmic Cries of Humanity to Christ (Kyrie eleison - Lord have mercy) and Christ?s responses from Saint Matthew?s Gospel. The work ends with a serene?Coda? of the sacred monosyllable ?OM? representing the peace and beatitude of God?s presence. The intermingling of Christianity and Hinduism is an important simile for our times; in the same way early Christianity did nothesitate to incorporate Jewish and Greek thought.' - John Tavener
