In the famous Cotton Club were many concerts of greats like Duke Ellington. Broadway attracts millions of tourists. Many of them visit here one of the many musicals sometimes for years on the boards are placed. Broadway splashes sparkles and swings. Peter Martin shows usthree bites tests of this imaginary apple. Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was an Austrian composer working in the early Romantic era. His ever-popular Ave Maria was composed in 1825 as No.6 of his Op. 52 a setting of seven songs from Sir WalterScott?s epic poem The Lady Of The Lake. The text came from a part of the poem called Ellen?s Song.The melody has been re-used many times and is often set to the Catholic Prayer that starts with the samephrase (?Hail Mary? in English). Most memorably it was adapted by Walt Disney for his 1940 film Fantasia. It has been transcribed here for Cello and Piano by the Italian cellist Alfredo Piatti as one of his ThreeMelodies.

'Three Scherzi for violin and piano follow closely the Minuet and Trio form used so often for lighter movements in eighteenth and early nineteenth century sonatas and symphonies. In each piece the Minuet isdivided into two sections and each section is repeated; similarly the Trio section is also divided into two repeated sections in which the music is generally more gently paced. After the Trio the minuet is played againimmediately this time without repeats. In these Scherzi I have chosen to use variants of the original of each section in most instances rather than make exact repetitions. The first Scherzo lasts approximately 3 minutes thesecond 6 minutes and the third 2 minutes. Part of my interest and purpose in writing these pieces was to use an identical but highly elastic form for three pieces of different durations. I was also intrigued by the form’shistorical development and evolution into the Scherzo and I hope this explains the atmosphere and style of the music.The material for each of the three pieces is different although the harmonic and rhythmic worlds ofeach one are similar and as a result they do form a complete work in three movements. However each of the three Scherzi may be played separately. These three pieces were written between September 2004 and August2007.'Brian Elias

For the project The Music of Kurt Weill, Peter Kleine Schaars rewrote a number of works by the German composer Kurt Weill (1900?1950) for the ?Dreigroschen-Orchester? (an occasional ensemble with the line-up that Weill had prescribed for his Kleine Dreigroschenmusik). Kleine Schaars became inspired by the three periods that characterize the life of Weill: he successively lived in Berlin, Paris and New York. Three Aspects of Kurt Weill (with the subtitle Drei Kurzweilige Impressionen) has one theme that comes forward in three totally different atmospheres, corresponding with the three mentioned periods. Movement one is a ?Berlin-tinted? protest march and parodies the fascist use of music. Movement two is a French musette (valse de Paris). Finally, the theme is featured in big band style in movement three: here, your ensemble transforms into a swinging Broadway band.
