for Violin and Piano-Following the publication of the Valse-Scherzo we continue Henle's edition of Tchaikovsky?s complete works for violin and piano with the enchanting Sérénade mélancolique op. 26. This was Tchaikovsky?s first concertante work forviolin the beginning of a path that was to lead to his Violin Concerto three years later. He composed the Sérénade mélancolique in 1875 for violinist Leopold Auer originally for violin and orchestra but later also in a versionfor violin and piano. Since the autograph sources are lost this Henle edition is based on the Russian first editions which even in Tchaikovsky?s lifetime were issued in a number of revised versions. The editor RussianTchaikovsky scholar Alexander Komarov brings exemplary clarity to the confused state of the sources while Ingolf Turban unlocks the notation of the violin part with his accomplished fingerings and bowings.

Music of Spain and South America for Violin by Allan Alexander contains 44 pieces which can be played solo or with a chord instrument. This great collection includes music from the Spain and South America. Most of the pieces have been extended with variations which make the tunes a more suitable length for performances and are a lot of fun for the violinist to play. Every tune in the book is included on the digitally mastered CD. Though the tunes are very effective as solo material Allan chose to record them with violinist Elena Rojas. Elena has given a skillful delightful performance of the music and Allan has rendered the chords artfully. The result is a reallylovely CD; listening will be a pleasure. For the player who is new to music of Spain and South America the recording will give insights into the melodies and it will allow the violinist who has no access to a chord instrument to hear and play along with the guitar as the violin part can be turned down by fading one channel. For those who know some of these wonderful tunes it will be a joy to have the music and hear them played by two musicians who obviously love to play this music together. The CD which comes with the book has all 44 of the tunes in the same order in which they appear in the book.
