The word ‘tsunami’ is of Japanese origin. When you look it up in a dictionary, you will find that it means ‘a great sea wave produced by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption’.
A megatsunami is the superlative of this awesome expressionof power that nature can create, and has catastrophic consequences.

When Carl Wittrock completed this composition not many such big earth movements had occurred, but since then we have become all too familiar with the disastrousconsequences which a tsunami may have.
On the 26th of December 2004 a heavy seaquake took place near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Tidal waves 10 meters in height ravaged the coastal regions of many countries for miles around. The tsunamitook the lives of thousands of people and destroyed many villages and towns.

There are more areas which run the risk of being struck by a tsunami, such as the island of La Palma, one of the Canary Islands. This island is based on oceaniccrust at a fracture zone and as such is one of nature’s time bombs. The consequences of a natural calamity like a megatsunami are immense.
In the case of La Palma, the tidal wave will move in the direction of South America, where it may reach 50km inland, destroying everything on its way.

In his composition Wittrock describes an ordinary day which will have an unexpected ending.
Right from the beginning there seems to be something in the air, the music creating an oppressiveatmosphere of impending disaster.
Themes are interrupted, broken off suddenly, followed by silence, suggesting the calm before the storm.
Suddenly a short climax (glissandi in the trombone part) indicates the seaquake, and the megatsunami isa fact. Hereafter follows a turbulent passage symbolising the huge rolling waves.
After nature’s force has spent itself, resignation sets in and the composition ends with a majestic ode to nature.

Het woord tsunami is afkomstig uit het Japans. Het woordenboek geeft als betekenis: een vloedgolf als gevolg van een onderzeese aardbeving. Een megatsunami is de overtreffende trap van deze vorm van natuurgeweld en heeft catastrofale gevolgen.

Toen Carl Wittrock deze compositie voltooide waren er nog niet veel voorbeelden van dergelijke grote bevingen, maar inmiddels weten we maar al te goed welke desastreuze gevolgen een tsunami kan veroorzaken.
Op 26 december 2004 vond ereen zware beving plaats in de zee nabij het Indonesische eiland Sumatra. Vloedgolven van wel 10 meter hoog teisterden de kuststreken van menig land in de verre omtrek. De tsunami eiste duizenden mensenlevens en verwoestte vele dorpen ensteden.

Er zijn meer gebieden waar sprake is van een directe dreiging, zoals op het eiland La Palma, één van de Canarische eilanden. Dit eiland ligt op een breukvlak en is daarmee een tijdbom van de natuur. Bij een calamiteit als eenmegatsunami zijn de gevolgen niet te overzien.
In het geval van La Palma begeeft de vloedgolf van enkele honderden meters zich richting Zuid Amerika met alle gevolgen van dien. Tot ongeveer 50 kilometer landinwaarts heeft de megatsunami eenallesverwoestende werking.

In de compositie schetst Wittrock een gewone dag die ongewoon zal aflopen. Al vanaf het begin hangt er iets in de lucht en is er sprake van een dreigende, beklemmende sfeer.
Themas worden onderbroken doorplotselinge afbrekingen en stiltes. Opeens is daar de korte climax (glissandi in trombones) die de beving symboliseert en de megatsunami is een feit.
Een onrustig gedeelte vangt aan, daarmee de rollende, voortstuwende golven symboliserend. Na hetnatuurgeweld is er berusting en The Power of the Megatsunami wordt afgesloten met een majestueuze ode aan de natuur.

Released in cinemas in 1993, Tombstone is an American western written by Kevin Jarre and directed by George Cosmatos. Starring Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, it was narrated by Robert Mitchum and is based on events relating to the Gunfight at the OK Corral, and the subsequent Wyatt Earp Vendetta, both of which took place in Tombstone, Arizona.The theme is crime, political corruption and law enforcement in the American west during the 1880s. The score was by Bruce Broughton, and this selection features music from the opening and closing credits.

Tombstone ist ein amerikanischer Western aus dem Jahre 1983, der unter der Regie von Kevin Jarre nach einem Drehbuch von George Cosmatos entstand. Der Film mit Kurt Russell und Val Kilmer in den Hauptrollen sowie Robert Mitchum als Erzähler basiert auf den historischen Ereignissen rund um die Schießerei am OK Corral und dem daraus resultierenden Rachefeldzug von Wyatt Earp. Beides fand im Ort Tombstone im US-Bundesstaat Arizona statt. Themen des Films sind Verbrechen, politische Korruption und Strafverfolgung im Amerika der 1880er-Jahre.Diese Bearbeitung präsentiert eine Auswahl aus der Eröffnungs- und Abspannmusik der originalen Filmmusik von Bruce Broughton.

The young have the future. This is the statement made at the beginning of ‘Like a Child’ by Andreas Ludwig Schulte.
The opening radiates strength and ambition, but one is also made to wonder which direction will be chosen, which choices will have to be made.
After the introduction the first steps on the path of life are taken, still somewhat unsteadily (the 3/4th time used illustrates this uncertainty). However, the child has now set off and will meet the future with an open mind, unafraid, even though experience will teach it how easily it can be hurt.
Fortunately, it is sometimes allowed to be vulnerable and it discovers there will always be someone to offer shelter,support and love. (Adagio)
The last part breathes a far greater independence. Youth is able to face the future, it can even take on the whole world!

Wie de jeugd heeft, heeft de toekomst. Met dit statement begint deze compositie van Andreas Ludwig Schulte.
Het begin straalt kracht en ambitie uit. Maar welke kant gaat het op, welke keuzes moeten gemaakt worden?
Na de inleidingworden de eerste schreden op het levenspad gezet, het is nog wat onzeker (de driekwarts maat voelt een beetje wankel). Toch gaan we daarna op pad, onbevangen, met open vizier de toekomst tegemoet al blijken er toch noch kwetsbaremomenten te bestaan.
Gelukkig mogen we dat soms ook zijn en dan is er altijd wel iemand bij wie we geborgenheid, steun en liefde ontvangen. (Adagio)
Het laatste deel straalt al veel meer zelfstandigheid uit. Laat maarkomen die toekomst, we kunnen de wereld aan!

A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!

Een flashback is een psychologisch fenomeen: een hedendaagse belevenis roept zomaar uit het niets herinneringen uit het verleden op. Zo verging het ook Jan de Haan, toen hij een muziekstuk voor het Nationaal Jeugd Fanfare Orkest inopdracht kreeg. Het is het orkest waarin hij zelf ooit speelde. Plotseling viel hem het werk Deep Harmony in, een werk dat hij destijds vaak had gespeeld. Zijn flashback op dit Engelse kerklied nam hij als inspiratiebronen hij verwerkte het in dit nieuwe muziekstuk. De juiste inval op het juiste moment, zoals nu iedereen kan horen!

Ein Flashback“ ist ein psychologisches Phänomen: Eine Erfahrung weckt scheinbar aus dem Nichts die Erinnerung an lang Zurückliegendes. So ging es auch Jan de Haan, als er ein Stück für ein Jugendauswahlorchester der Niederlande, in dem er selbst einst mitspielte, schreiben sollte. Plötzlich fiel ihm ein damals oft programmiertes Stück namens Deep Harmony ein und er nahm diesen Flashback als Inspiration, dieses englische Kirchenlied in seinem neuen Werk zu verarbeiten. Der richtige Einfall im richtigen Moment, wie das Resultat beweist!

Le flash-back est un phénomène psychologique. Des événements du passé, imprimés dans la mémoire long terme, resurgissent comme une réponse inconsciente et soudaine un stimulus lié une expérience antérieure.Cette œuvre a été composée l’occasion du cinquantième anniversaire de l’Orchestre de Fanfare National des Jeunes des Pays-Bas, une formation talentueuse, dont Jan de Haan fut lui-même membre, au cours des années 1960. Jeune musicien, il éprouvait un profond respect pour le chef d’alors, Piebe Bakker (1929-2002), un homme passionné, avec un style de direction très stimulant. En revenant sur cette période, quarante ans après, Jan de Haan a revécu lesnombreuses interprétations de la pièce Deep Harmony. La mélodie scintillante - extraite d’un cantique anglais - lui est alors apparue comme un flash-back et c’est comme un éclair mental qu’il a choisi de lui redonner vie dans le passage final de cette œuvre.

English Dances, Set I, opus 27, is a light classic composition that was written for orchestra by the British composer Malcolm Arnold in 1950. The set contains four dances that continue without pause: the individual movements are indicated by the tempo markings. The work came about at the request of Bernard de Nevers, at the time the head of publisher Alfred Lengnick & Co., who asked Arnold to write a suite of dances as an English counterpart to Dvo ák’s Slavonic Dances and Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances. The première took place in the spring of 1951, played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult. Following the success of the first set, DeNevers asked the composer to write a second one, which Arnold completed the next year (Op. 33). The Andantino from the first set has been skilfully arranged and orchestrated for brass band by Ray Farr.

Monterosi is a village in the Italian province of Viterbo in the Lazio region. This work has been dedicated to the Accademia Musicale Francigena in Monterosi, to celebrate the occasion of the third “Tommaso Albani”, a national competition for wind orchestras. The first performance of Monterosi was conducted by the composer, who had been invited for the third time to be a jury member and guest conductor. It is a solemn piece, with lyrical tendencies, which demonstrates the glorious, full sound of the band.

Dieses Werk wurde der Accademia Musicale Francigena in Monterosi gewidmet, zur Feier des dritten Tommaso Albani“, einem nationalen Blasorchester- Wettbewerb. Die Uraufführung von Monterosi wurde vom Komponisten selbst dirigert, der bereits zum dritten Mal als Jurymitglied und Gastdirigent zu diesem Anlass eingeladen worden war. Monterosi ist ein feierliches Werk mit lyrischen Tendenzen, das den prächtigen, vollen Klang der Brassband voll zur Geltung kommen lässt.

La première a eu lieu sous la direction du compositeur. Jacob de Haan a été sollicité pour la troisième fois comme membre du jury et chef invité. When I was approached to compose a work for brassband and church organ I already envisioned the concept I would use. It would indeed literally become a work for brassband and organ. Without the traditional solos, the organ would form an addition to the brassband orchestration as would the brassband provide an extra register for the organ. In short a homogeneous entity. The most important reason for doing this is quite simple. Since this work can only be performed in a church and because of the specific acoustics of the church, the brassband would sound in al its tone colour like an organ. By using certain registers of the organ and combining these with the brassband a wonderfulsound palette can be created. The use of complementary or contrasting tone quality is also possible. The primary theme of this composition is based on these three methods of “colouring”. As far as structure is concerned this work consists of two parts. slow fast. It is built on a number of motifs in which some behave like a consecutive canon. In the fast movement the primary motif develops into a fugue-like section. The canon and fugato are techniques frequently used in classical and contemporary organ literature. The liberal use of structure and motif has lead to the title. “Fantasy for Brassband and Organ”.

Jan Bosveld zegt:Toen mij gevraagd werd een compositie te maken voor brassband en kerkorgel stond mij direct een duidelijk concept voor ogen. Het zou inderdaad een werk gaan worden voor brassband en orgel in de letterlijke zin vanhet woord. Geen traditioneel solowerk maar het orgel als uitbreiding van de brassbandbezetting en de brassband als een extra register van het orgel. Kortom, een homogeen geheel. De belangrijkste reden hiervoor is simpel. Het werkkan eigenlijk alleen in een kerk worden uitgevoerd en een brassband, in een kerk met zijn specifieke akoestiek, klinkt in al zijn kleurschakeringen als een orgel. Door het orgel in een bepaalde registratie te laten klinken kan,in combinatie met de brassband, een prachtige mengklank tot stand worden gebracht. Ook kan worden gekozen voor een klank die aanvullend is of contrasterend. Deze drie manieren van “kleuren” is het belangrijkste thema van de compositie.Wat vorm betreft bestaat het werk uit twee delen. langzaam snel. Het is opgebouwd uit een aantal motieven waarvan sommige zich gedragen als een snel opvolgende canon. In het snelle deel wordt het belangrijkste motief uitgebreidtot een fugato-achtig gedeelte. De canon en het fugato zijn technieken die zowel in de klassieke, als de hedendaagse orgelliteratuur veel worden gebruikt. Het vrij omgaan met de vorm en de motieven heeft geleid tot de titel.Fantasy for Brassband and Organ”.

Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. Thefinal part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.

In het Zwitserse Wallberg wordt ieder jaar een concours voor harmonieorkesten en brassbands georganiseerd. Naast een hymne en een solowerk dienen alle orkesten een verplicht werk uit te voeren. Voor het concours van 2012 werd eenopdracht verstrekt aan Jan de Haan. De compositie kreeg Musica Helvetica als titel mee. Het gaat om een driedelig concertwerk waarvan de laatste twee delen onafgebroken in elkaar overgaan. Het eerste deel, Musica Prima,is een virtuoze en flitsende opening met hier en daar jazzy invloeden. In contrast daarmee staat het expressieve volgende deel, Musica Sacra, waarin het gedragen hoofdthema prachtig wordt uitgewerkt - de instrumentatieis hier buitengewoon kleurrijk. Het afsluitende deel, Musica Alpina, is ge nspireerd op het afwisselende landschap van Zwitserland. Het is grillig van structuur en vormt een waardige afsluiting van dit fraaie drieluik.

Im schweizerischen Wallberg wird jedes Jahr ein Wettbewerb für Blasorchester und Brass Bands ausgerichtet. Neben einer Hymne und einem Solowerk müssen alle Orchester ein Pfllichtstück spielen. Vor dem Wettbewerb im Jahr 2012 wurde der Auftrag zu diesem Pflichtstück an Jan de Haan vergeben. Die Komposition erhielt den Titel Musica Helvetica. Es handelt sich dabei um ein dreiteiliges Konzertwerk, dessen letzten zwei Teile direkt ineinander übergehen. Der erste Teil, Musica Prima, ist eine virtuose, flotte Eröffnung mit eingestreuten jazzigen Einflüssen. Einen Kontrast hierzu bildet der folgende Teil, Musica Sacra, worin das Hauptthema wunderschönausgearbeitet wird - die Instrumentierung ist hier außergewöhnlich farbig. Der letzte Teil, Musica Alpina, ist inspiriert vom abwechslungsreichen Landschaftsbild der Schweiz. Mit seiner launigen Struktur bildet er einen würdigen Abschluss dieses schönen Triptychons.

Chaque année, un concours pour orchestres d’harmonie et brass bands se déroule Wallberg, en Suisse. Outre un hymne et une oeuvre avec solo, tous les orchestres doivent interpréter une pièce imposée. Jan de Haan fut chargé de composer celle-ci pour l’édition 2012 du concours. Intitulée Musica Helvetica, cette composition prend la forme d’une pièce de concert en trois parties, les deux dernières se suivant sans interruption. La première partie, Musica Prima, est une ouverture rapide, épicée d’accents jazzy. La suivante, Musica Sacra, offre un splendide contraste avec une instrumentation incroyablement colorée dans le thème principal. This work was composed for a series of concerts that were characterised by a variety of musical directions. These musical directions are captured in Campus Intrada, which was named after the Cultuurcampus in which the concerts took place. A typical fanfare-like section, a jazzy section and a section reminiscent of pop music are contained in this three-minute work.

Dit werk is gecomponeerd voor een reeks van concerten die zich kenmerken door diverse muzikale richtingen. Deze muzikale richtingen komen samen in Campus Intrada, vernoemd naar de Cultuurcampus waarin de concerten plaatsvonden. Jacob de Haan nam zowel een typisch fanfare-achtige gedeelte, een jazzy sectie als ook een sectie op die doet denken aan popmuziek in dit drie minuten durende werk.

Dieses Werk wurde speziell für eine Konzertreihe komponiert, die sich durch eine Vielfalt an musikalischen Richtungen auszeichnete. Diese Richtungen sind auch in Campus Intrada verrtreten, das nach dem Cultuurcampus“, in dem die Konzerte stattfanden, benannt wurde. So wurden ein typisch fanfareartiger Teil, ein jazziger und ein an Popmusik erinnernder Teil kurz und prägnant in einem dreiminütigen Werk zusammengefasst.

Ces styles sont saisis dans Campus Intrada dont le titre est nommé selon le Cultuurcampus où les concerts ont eu lieu. Plusieurs sections différentes font partie de cette œuvre d’une longueur de trois minutes : l’une dans la forme d’une fanfare, une autre dans un style jazz et une dernière évoquant la musique pop.

Shalom Chaverim is an ancient Hebrew (farewell)song, which was originally sung at the end of a celebration or meeting. It was and is mostly sung as a round. Freely translated the words mean “Goodbye, friends, goodbye and see you again!”. The varying moods at a parting have been captured very well by Andreas Schulte in his arrangement ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’. The composer himself says about the song, ‘Although the melody is in a minor key, the overall atmosphere in the song is positive. one wishes each other all the best. Saying goodbye, however, also hurts. When you slow down the pace of the melody and add ‘blue notes’ in the harmonies, this can be sensed immediately.’Schulte refers here to the first variation. The second variation is very intense with possibly even deeper-felt emotions. ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’ ends on a cheerful and positive note, in fast tempo, and with oriental elements in the melody: ‘L'hitra'ot, Shalom’ (See you again, and farewell!).

Shalom Chaverim is een oud hebreeuws (afscheids)lied, dat oorspronkelijk aan het eind van een viering of bijeenkomst gezongen werd. Dit werd en wordt meestal in ‘canon’ gedaan. Vrij vertaald luidt de tekst: ‘Dag makkers, dag, totziens!’. De verschillende stemmingen bij een afscheid zijn bijzonder fraai door Andreas Schulte in zijn ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’ verwerkt. Zelf zegt de componist over het lied: ‘Alhoewel de toonsoort van de melodie in mineuris, is de teneur van het lied positief. je wenst elkaar alle goeds toe. Maar afscheid doet soms pijn. Wanneer je het tempo van de melodie verlaagt en ‘blue-notes’ toevoegt in de samenklanken, is dit direct voelbaar.’ Schulte doelthiermee op de eerste variatie. De tweede variatie is zeer intens met mogelijk nog diepere gevoelens. Met een hoog tempo en oosterse elementen in de melodie, eindigt Variations on Shalom Chaverim, opgewekt en positief: ‘L'hitra'ot,Shalom’ (Tot ziens, het ga je goed!).
